  Gibson rushed six times for 26 yards and caught his only target for 11 yards in Friday's 48-18 preseason win over the Commanders. He also had a 62-yard kickoff return. Gibson was the third running back into the game for New England behind TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson. It will likely take an injury to one of those two alternatives for Gibson to see significant action on offense in the regular season, but he seems to have a firm grasp on the third spot on the depth chart heading into the Patriots' second preseason game against the Vikings on Aug. 16.

Prior to Thursday's absence, Lazar notes that Gibson had been paired with rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson on kickoff returns and remains involved on offense. However, with Rhamondre Stevenson set to handle his share of early-down work and Henderson set to make his mark in passing situations, Gibson's path to volume this season is cloudy in what figures to be a complementary role.

• Patriots' Antonio Gibson: Added competition for carries

  As the coming season approaches, Gibson and fellow returnee Rhamondre Stevenson will have added competition for backfield touches, with rookie second-rounder TreVeyon Henderson now in the mix, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports. In his first season with the Patriots, Gibson worked behind Stevenson, carrying 120 times for 538 yards and a TD, while adding 23 catches for 206 yards in 17 regular-season contests. Looking ahead, Stevenson -- who logged 207 carries in 15 regular-season games in 2024 -- is back to reclaim his share of the team's early-down work, with the presence of the explosive Henderson likely to cut into Gibson's volume. In that context, the 27-year-old is largely off the re-draft radar, but that's something that could change if either Stevenson or Henderson were to miss time at some point.

  We don't know if the Patriots will use Gibson or Rhamondre Stevenson as the primary running back in Week 18 against Buffalo, but Gibson is worth adding and using as a flex option if Week 17 carries over to this week. Gibson had 12 carries for 63 yards and one target against the Chargers, while Stevenson had two carries for 1 yard and one target. He was punished for fumbling at Buffalo in Week 16, and the Patriots could continue to lean on Gibson. The Bills have allowed a running back to score at least 12.3 PPR points in three of their past four games, including Stevenson in Week 16 when he had 12 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown and one catch for 13 yards on one target, along with the fumble. Gibson had 10 carries for 28 yards and two catches for 8 yards on two targets in that game.

• Patriots' Antonio Gibson: Leads team backfield Saturday

  Gibson ran for 63 yards on 12 carries during Saturday's 40-7 loss to the Chargers. The Patriots previously indicated that Gibson would start over Rhamondre Stevenson in this game, but evidently the Patriots meant that Gibson would merely get the most usage of the two, as Stevenson was for some reason still the ceremonial starter Saturday. It's not clear what New England meant to convey with that, but Stevenson finished with only two carries for one yard while Gibson otherwise took over the backfield. Stevenson was previously reported as benched due to his prolific fumbling, and it remains to be seen if the Patriots mean to continue making a point on that front. Neither Patriots running back is likely set up all that great against the Bills in Week 18 unless Buffalo plays only second and third stringers in what could be a meaningless game, but it seems like Gibson has the recent momentum, mixed signals from the Patriots coaches aside.

  Gibson could start in Week 17 against the Chargers after Rhamondre Stevenson again had trouble with ball security in Week 16 at Buffalo. Stevenson lost his third fumble of the season, and he also dropped a backward pass from Drake Maye that was recovered in the end zone by the Bills. Gibson would only be a flex option at best if we knew Stevenson wasn't going to play, but it's doubtful Gibson will get the majority of touches. He has three games this season with at least 10 total touches, and he scored 11.3 PPR points, 7.3 PPR points, and 5.6 PPR points in those outings.

  Gibson carried 10 times for 28 yards and caught both of his targets for eight yards in Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Bills. Gibson also recorded a fumble that was recovered by New England in the contest, while logging 43 of a possible 73 snaps on offense, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. Meanwhile, starting RB Rhamondre Stevenson was on the field for 32 snaps en route to carrying 12 times for 60 yards and a TD and catching his only target for 13 yards, while fumbling once (recovered by Buffalo) and also being involved in a turnover (assigned to QB Drake Maye) that the Bills turned into a score. As Saturday's game against the Chargers approaches, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald relays that head coach Jerod Mayo indicated that it's a possibility that the team could start Gibson over Stevenson in Week 17. The last time that happened (stemming from Stevenson's ball-security issues early on this season), the two backs each logged 28 snaps in the Patriots' Week 5 loss to the Dolphins, with Stevenson recording 12 carries for 89 yards and a TD and catching four passes for three yards, while Gibson rushed six times for 52 yards and added one catch for four yards. With that in mind, it's plausible that Gibson could handle enough touches versus Los Angeles to merit deep-league lineup consideration, but Stevenson figures to remain part of the game plan, even if he doesn't take the first snap out of the team's backfield.

While we don't expect Gibson to overtake Stevenson in the Patriots' backfield pecking order any time soon, Gibson's workload this coming weekend against the Colts will be worth monitoring to see if the uptick in his RB snap share extends beyond Week 12, when Stevenson struggled to get going in a game in which Miami led by a 31-0 score by the end of the third quarter.

  Gibson rushed 13 times for 19 yards and caught three of four targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 41-21 loss to the Texans. Gibson got 13 of the 17 carries by Patriots running backs prior to the final drive in Rhamondre Stevenson's (foot) absence, but the Texans weren't scared at all of rookie quarterback Drake Maye's arm in Maye's first NFL start and focused on shutting down the Gibson-led running game. That approach limited Gibson to a pitiful 1.5 yards per carry and could serve as a blueprint for Jacksonville's defense in Week 7, though the 1-5 Jaguars are unlikely to execute nearly as well when they face the Patriots in London. If Stevenson sits again, Gibson would have a nice opportunity to bounce back as the lead back against a Jacksonville defense that's surrendering 29.7 points per game.
