Player Outlook
There are so many exciting quarterbacks available late in drafts, and Drake Maye is certainly among them. We consider him a high-upside QB2 due to his big arm and rushing ability. Maye played nearly 100% of the snaps in nine games, and in those games, he was on pace for 3,993 passing yards and 625 rushing yards. Expect a dip in rushing production as his 7.8 yards per carry was the best for a quarterback since 2011, but Maye will still provide an advantage over most quarterbacks in that area. He needs to cut down on the interceptions (3% INT rate was among the worst in the NFL), but there is so much to like about a player who was the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The additions of Stefon Diggs in free agency and rookies Kyle Williams and TreVeyon Henderson give Maye more weapons and more upside. On the other hand, it's not as if Maye has a true stud at wide receiver, and if he continues to turn the ball over he'll be disappointing, but Maye is worth the risk with a late pick.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Not suited up Thursday

Maye isn't in uniform in advance of Thursday's preseason game at the Giants, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. Maye logged two drives apiece in both of the Patriots' first two exhibitions, completing seven of 12 passes for 58 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions, rushing twice for 16 yards and a TD and losing a fumble. He thus has a number of reps under his belt ahead of his second campaign after throwing for 2,276 yards and a 15:10 TD:INT on 66.6 percent passing and turning 54 carries into 421 yards and two scores in 13 regular-season appearances (12 starts) as a rookie.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Leads TD drive Saturday

Maye completed four of seven passes for 46 yards in Saturday's 20-12 preseason win over the Vikings. The second-year QB didn't add any yards on the ground or toss any TDs in two drives before checking out of the contest, but Maye did help position the Patriots for an eight-yard TreVeyon Henderson rushing score in the first quarter. Maye got his supporting cast upgraded this offseason with the additions of Henderson and Stefon Diggs (knee), and New England is counting on the third overall pick in the 2024 Draft to take a big step forward in 2025.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Better with legs than arm

Maye completed three of five passes for 12 yards in Friday's 48-18 preseason win over the Commanders. He added two rushing attempts for 16 yards and a touchdown but also lost a fumble. Maye played two drives. He turned the ball over with a fumble on the first but capped the second with a five-yard rushing touchdown. Maye has posted pedestrian passing stats in his young NFL career, but the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has been an effective scrambler, rushing for 30-plus yards in half of his 12 regular-season starts as a rookie. Maye will look to sharpen his passing in the Patriots' second preseason game against the Vikings on Aug. 16.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: On track to see snaps Friday

Based on warmups, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site notes that Maye worked with the team's top offense. Also out there with the second-year QB in that context were RB Rhamondre Stevenson, WRs DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins, along with TE Hunter Henry. Meanwhile WR Stefon Diggs wasn't spotted in warmups, which is not surprising given that he's bouncing back from an ACL tear he suffered Week 8 of last season. Coach Mike Vrabel previously indicated that "most everybody that's healthy should expect to play in the game," and Maye indeed appears to be on track to log snaps versus Washington.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Expected to see snaps Friday

The expectation is that Maye will see some action in Friday's preseason opener against the Commanders, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reports. Though Maye's playing status for Friday's contest hasn't been confirmed by the team, earlier this week coach Mike Vrabel did note that "most everybody that's healthy should expect to play in the game. How long they'll play, I don't know, but we have to prepare to play in football games and prepare to win football games." Also in the mix to see QB snaps for the Patriots versus Washington are Joshua Dobbs and Ben Wooldridge.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Finding stride in minicamp

Maye has looked sharp in practice of late, according to Evan Lazar of Patriots.com. Maye turned in another solid effort during Monday's minicamp session, continuing a trend that has seen the young QB demonstrate signs of improvement this spring as he adjusts to new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' system. Though the team's practices at this stage are of the non-contact variety, Maye's progress is nonetheless encouraging, with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft noting that he's "starting to really find a stride" as next month's training camp approaches. After logging 2,276 passing yards and a 15:10 TD:INT in 13 appearances as a rookie, Maye enters his second campaign entrenched as New England's starting QB, with the 22-year-old's 2025 fantasy prospects buoyed by a series of offseason additions aimed at improving his supporting cast. While it remains to be seen how productive the team's re-tooled passing game will be, the North Carolina product's running ability could still help him land him on the fantasy radar.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Quick exit in Week 18 win

Maye (hand) failed to complete his only pass attempt before giving way to Joe Milton in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Bills. The rookie QB was bothered by an issue with his throwing hand during practice this week, and with nothing on the line in Week 18, the Patriots pulled Maye after one series rather than risk further injury. The third overall pick in the 2024 Draft finishes his first NFL campaign with a 66.6 percent completion rate, 2,276 passing yards and a 15:10 TD:INT in 13 appearances, and improving his ball security as well as his production will be the focus for 2025. Maye will also be learning a new offense, as head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt were let go immediately after Sunday's game.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Active versus Bills

Maye (right hand) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Bills. Maye was listed as limited in practice this week, before approaching the 3-13 Patriots' season finale with a 'questionable' designation. With his active status versus a Bills team that's locked into the No. 2 playoff seed in the AFC now confirmed, Maye is in line to close out his rookie campaign in the starting lineup, though as Mike Reiss of ESPN notes, it's possible that 2024 sixth-rounder Joe Milton could enter Sunday's contest at some point, either by design (to get him some snaps for evaluation purposes) or as the result of Week 18 game flow.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Status in question for Sunday

Maye (right hand) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports. Despite being limited in practice all week and listed as such for Week 18 action, Maye is expected to be under center this weekend, as coach Jarod Mayo told Mike Reiss of ESPN.com on Wednesday and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt relayed to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe on Thursday. The Patriots will post their list of inactives about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, so a decision on Maye's status should become known by that point. Jacoby Brissett and Joe Milton are the other signal-callers on New England's active roster.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Another limited practice

Maye (right hand) remained limited at practice Thursday. Per Ben Volin of The Boston Globe, Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt indicated Thursday that Maye is in line to start Sunday's game against the Bills, who are locked into the No. 2 AFC playoff seed, but the QB may need to practice fully Friday in order to avoid a Week 18 injury designation. In any case, while Maye appears on track to close out the regular season in the starting lineup, it remains plausible that 2024 sixth-rounder Joe Milton could enter Sunday's contest at some point, either by design or as a product of game flow.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Limited by hand issue

Maye was a limited participant at practice Wednesday due to a right hand injury. Maye left this past Saturday's 40-7 loss to the Chargers at one point to undergo a concussion evaluation, but he was cleared to re-enter the game. He's apparently emerged from the Week 17 contest with a hand injury, but the expectation is that Maye will start Sunday's season finale against the Bills, after head coach Jerod Mayo said earlier Wednesday that he's planning on having all of the Patriots' healthy starters take the field in Week 18, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. Assuming Maye is able to advance to full practice participation by Friday and avoids an injury designation, he should direct the offense Sunday, though it's possible that rookie sixth-round pick Joe Milton seems some snaps under center at some point during the contest.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: In line to start Sunday

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo suggested Wednesday that Maye is expected to start Sunday against the Bills, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. "Drake is our starting quarterback. If he's healthy and ready to go, as we go through this week of practice, then he'll play," Mayo said of the rookie quarterback. The 3-13 Patriots would secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft with a loss to Buffalo, but Mayo didn't indicate that he has any intention of resting healthy starters in the season finale. While Maye thus appears likely to play versus the Bills, New England could elect to give 2024 sixth-round pick Joe Milton some playing time at some point during Sunday's contest.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Week 18 Waiver Priority List

There's a chance Maye could sit if the Patriots want to not risk losing the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but if he plays, then I like his chances to produce against most likely Bills' backups. Maye scored 21.4 Fantasy points at Buffalo in Week 16, and he scored at least 19.5 Fantasy points in four of his past six games. Keep an eye on what New England does, but Maye could be a low-end starter in deeper leagues in Week 18.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Exit's Saturday's game

Maye was forced out of Saturday's game against the Chargers with a head injury. Prior to his first-quarter exit from the contest, Maye completed his only pass attempt for one yard. In his absence, Jacoby Brissett is next up at quarterback for the Patriots.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Mixed results in loss

Maye completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 202 yards, one touchdown and one interception while rushing four times for 14 yards and another score in Sunday's 30-17 loss to the Cardinals. Maye scored a pair of garbage-time touchdowns in the fourth quarter to help pad his fantasy line, but the rookie couldn't avoid throwing an interception for the sixth week in a row. The North Carolina product now owns a poor 1.3 TD/INT ratio through nine starts as a rookie. Maye could see a bump in projections in a road tilt against the Bills, assuming the Patriots fall behind big early and the weather is tolerable in Buffalo. That said, his value is limited to two-QB formats in Week 16.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Rookie struggles in loss

Maye completed 22 of 37 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception while rushing five times for 26 yards in the Patriots' 34-15 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. He also lost a fumble. Maye's final numbers were serviceable enough to belie some of the difficulties he experienced throughout the afternoon, which included taking four sacks in addition to his pair of turnovers. The rookie couldn't lead the Patriots to any points until the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter and he connected with Austin Hooper for a 38-yard touchdown pass, extending his streak of at least one scoring toss to four games. Maye's pair of miscues led to a total of 10 points for the Dolphins, but he'll have a chance at redemption against an inconsistent Colts defense when the Patriots host Indianapolis in Week 13.

  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Sleeper QBs

Maye comes into Week 12 having scored at least 21.9 Fantasy points in three of his past five healthy games, and I hope he takes advantage of this matchup against the Dolphins. Ironically, Miami has allowed three of the past four opposing quarterbacks to score at least 21.9 Fantasy points, so hopefully, that's a good number for Maye again. He's a great bye-week replacement quarterback in all leagues in Week 12.
... See More ... See Less
  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Week 12 Waiver Priority List

Maye scored 21.9 Fantasy points in Week 11 against the Rams, which is his third game over 21 Fantasy points in five full outings this season. He's worth streaming in his next two games against Miami in Week 12 and Indianapolis in Week 13 before a bye in Week 14, and the schedule gets brutal after that with games against Arizona (Week 15), Buffalo (Week 16) and the Chargers (Week 17). Maye is worth adding for at least 10 percent of your remaining FAB.
... See More ... See Less
  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Two TDs, two turnovers in loss

Maye completed 30 of 40 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 28-22 loss to the Rams. He also rushed three times for 27 yards and lost a fumble. Maye threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne in the first quarter and a four-yard touchdown pass to offensive lineman Vederian Lowe in the fourth. This was the third time in six starts that Maye mustered multiple touchdown passes, but the lack of talent around him continues to limit Maye's fantasy upside as he adjusts to the NFL. The third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has much more value in dynasty and keeper formats than in redraft leagues considering he has as many turnovers as touchdown passes (nine), and Maye's fantasy upside will be limited in a Week 12 matchup against a stingy Dolphins secondary.
... See More ... See Less
  • Patriots' Drake Maye: Week 11 Waiver Priority List

Maye has scored 17.7 Fantasy points or less in each of his past two starts against the Titans and Bears, but I like his upcoming schedule against the Rams, Dolphins, and Colts. He could be used as a low-end starter in all leagues in those matchups, and he's worth adding for up to 5 percent of your remaining FAB.
