Costello was waived by the Saints on Sunday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Costello signed with the Saints on Aug. 10, but the union did not last long. This move is likely a positive note for the health of Jameis Winston (knee), although his injury was never expected to be serious. Costello will now work to earn an opportunity elsewhere.

Saints' K.J. Costello: Inks deal with New Orleans
Costello signed a contract with the Saints on Wednesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Costello was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State last August but was waived before the end of preseason. The 25-year-old appeared in six games during his final collegiate season, totaling 1,283 passing yards and six touchdowns, but he's yet to make his NFL debut.

Costello signed with the team at the start of August after attending rookie minicamp in the spring, but he won't stick around through the preseason. Chase Daniel and Easton Stick will remain the Chargers' backup options behind starter Justin Herbert.

Costello joined the Chargers for rookie minicamp earlier in the offseason, and he'll now compete with Chase Daniel and Easton Stick for a backup role during training camp. The 24-year-old appeared in six games during his senior season at Mississippi State in 2020 and threw for 1,283 yards, six touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
