HQ Training Camp Tour: Matt LaFleur Looking to Raise the Bar This Season

Player Outlook
Love's first two seasons as a starter have been a bit of a mixed bag. In 2023 he ranked eighth at QB in Fantasy on a per-game basis, averaging 22.3 FPPG. Last year that average cratered to 18.5, for a QB18 finish per game. Love battled touchdown regression, injuries, and interceptions, while the Packers offense went more run-heavy than they have been throughout the Matt LaFleur era. In 2025, we are expecting something in the middle, ranking Love as a borderline starter who should not be drafted before Round 9. The best plan if you draft Love in a one-QB league is to draft two QBs, perhaps pairing him with a high-upside option like Anthony Richardson or Justin Fields. In two-QB leagues, you can consider Love as early as Round 4 as a solid QB2 option. The addition of Matthew Golden could give him more upside than we are giving him credit for, but the Packers will have to trend more pass-heavy if he's going to be a true difference-maker.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: May take snaps this week

Coach Matt LaFleur said the Packers are hopeful that Love (thumb) will be able to take snaps when the team reconvenes for practice Tuesday, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. Love had surgery on Aug. 12 to address a ligament injury in his left thumb and was able to practice on a limited basis as of this past Monday. Green Bay predictably held him out of its final two preseason contests, allowing backup QB Malik Willis to get some run with the starters in Saturday's exhibition win against the Seahawks in particular. There's little concern about Love's availability for a Week 1 matchup with the Lions on Sunday, Sept. 7, and increasing his team drills this coming week would put him on pace to do so.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Not playing in preseason finale

Love (thumb) isn't in uniform for Saturday's preseason finale against Seattle, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports. Love had surgery Aug. 12 on his left thumb and was a limited practice participant at last update. There's been no concern expressed about his Week 1 status, with Love fully expected to start in a home game against the Lions. The health of his wide receivers is more of a concern, with Jayden Reed (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) both missing extended time this summer.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Taking part in 7-on-7s

Love (thumb) is participating in 7-on-7 drills at Monday's practice, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said over the weekend that the team would consider deploying modifications to 7-on-7 drills to allow Love to safely participate as he works his way back from surgery that he underwent Aug. 12 to address a ligament injury in his left thumb. Meanwhile, Romeo Doubs (back) has returned to practice and is working in team drills with Malik Willis, who will continue to handle first-team reps until Love is fully cleared. All indications from Green Bay are that Love is fully on track for Week 1 against Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 7, but it wouldn't be surprising for LaFleur to hold the starting quarterback out of Saturday's preseason finale against the Seahawks, even if it's possible he could suit up were it a regular-season affair. With Week 1 the clear priority, expect the Packers to take a cautious approach as Love ramps up his activity level.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Limited in return to practice

Love (thumb) is returning to practice Monday, but backup quarterback Malik Willis will open first-team reps under center, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. Love's left thumb remains heavily taped in a soft cast, and Packers coach Matt LaFleur already indicated that he wouldn't be a candidate to return to 11-on-11 reps this week. LaFleur did say Green Bay is considering making some alterations to 7-on-7 drills that would allow Love to participate, so it's possible he gets some team work in, but a timetable for the starting quarterback's full clearance remains undetermined. Love likely won't be a candidate to suit up for Saturday's preseason finale against the Seahawks, as the Packers continue to prioritize his availability for Week 1. Meanwhile, starting wideout Romeo Doubs (back) has returned to practice in some capacity Monday, per Ryan Wood of USA Today.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Could return to practice Monday

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Sunday they'll "hopefully get [Love] back in some capacity to practice" this week and will "see how he's doing" Monday, Wes Hodkiewicz of the team's official site reports. Love underwent surgery to address a ligament injury in his left thumb Tuesday, and he wore a soft cast while not participating in joint practices with the Colts on Thursday. Love did not suit up during Saturday's 22-19 preseason victory over Indianapolis, either. LaFleur added Sunday that the team will "alter some things" to get the quarterback involved during 7-on-7 sessions this week, so it's unclear if/when the team hopes to have him return in full during training camp. His last chance to play during the preseason will come during the finale against Seattle on Saturday, Aug. 23. However, the team likely will prioritize avoiding any setbacks for Love before the regular-season opener versus Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 7 -- especially as the team continues to work through injuries for wideouts Jayden Reed (foot), Romeo Doubs (back) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) during training camp. Wideout Christian Watson (ACL) is still on the active/PUP list as well.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Wearing cast on left hand

Love (thumb) is not practicing Thursday and is wearing a soft cast on his left hand, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports. Love won't practice as he continues to recover from surgery undergone to address a ligament injury in his left thumb, but the Packers still expect him to resume handling reps next weeks. The starting quarterback wasn't expected to suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Colts even if healthy, but it now remains to be seen whether he'll be able to log action in the team's preseason finale against Seattle on Saturday, Aug. 23. Elsewhere on the roster, Jayden Reed (foot) shed his walking boot Thursday but remains unable to practice, as do Romeo Doubs (back), Dontayvion Wicks (calf) and active/PUP list resident Christian Watson (ACL).

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Needs procedure on left thumb

Love is undergoing a procedure for a ligament injury in his left thumb, with the Packers hoping he'll be back at practice next week, Paul Bretl of ESPN LaCrosse 105.5 reports. Love suffered the injury during Saturday's preseason loss to the Jets, in which he completed one of five passes for seven yards over two drives. He wasn't expected to play in Green Bay's second preseason game anyway, and it sounds like he'll be back in practice well before the start of the regular season. The thumb injury would be a much bigger concern if it impacted his throwing hand. As is, Love doesn't seem to be in much danger of missing Week 1.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Officially limited Wednesday

Head coach Matt LaFleur said Love (elbow) was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports. Love made an early departure from this past Sunday's loss to the Bears with an elbow injury that resulted in a loss of feeling in his right hand. He was able to take part in Wednesday's team stretch and warmups, and in the ensuing practice outside that was closed to the media, he was able to throw, as LaFleur told Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. Love later mentioned to Schneidman that he doesn't have any lingering numbness in his hand but does have soreness in his elbow, which was the reason for his limited listing. Love's activity level Thursday and Friday likely will be key for his ability to suit up for Sunday's wild-card game in Philadelphia.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Warms up, but practice status TBD

Love (elbow) took part in Wednesday's team stretch and warmups before the Packers went outside for practice, the latter of which was closed to the media, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. Love banged his right elbow early in the second quarter of this past Sunday's loss to the Bears, and while he was seen throwing multiple times on the sideline, he wasn't able to return to the game. Head coach Matt LaFleur told Matt Schneidman of The Athletic afterward that Love lost feeling in his right throwing hand as a result of the play, and LaFleur then said Monday that the quarterback is "going to be OK," but was unsure how much he would be able to handle in practice as Green Bay prepares for Sunday's wild-card game at Philadelphia, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Wednesday's injury report will reveal Love's activity level to begin the week.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Held out Sunday as precaution

Coach Matt LaFleur said after Sunday's loss to the Bears that Love (elbow) could have returned but was held out as a precaution, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. Love didn't see a snap after banging his right elbow early in the second quarter while completing a short pass to RB Josh Jacobs that wqas negated by penalty. At various points during the contest, though, Love was seen throwing passes on the sideline, only to remain there while Malik Willis led the offense. Love's status now will bear monitoring as the Packers gear up for a wild-card game at Philadelphia next weekend.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Injures elbow in Week 18

Love sustained a right elbow injury during Sunday's game versus the Bears. Love seemed to get injured while trying to get the ball to RB Josh Jacobs in a crowded backfield early in the second quarter. Love was seen being tended to on the sideline before the Packers deemed him questionable to return. Malik Willis will direct the offense for as long as Love is sidelined.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Quiet against Vikings

Love completed 19 of 30 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 27-25 loss to the Vikings. He added one rush for six yards. Love and the Packers couldn't get anything going to begin the game, running five or fewer offensive plays in four of their five possessions in the first half. He managed to turn things around a bit in the final two quarters as the team made a furious comeback, with the highlights being a 35-yard completion down the seam to Tucker Kraft and a three-yard touchdown pass to Malik Heath. Overall, Love has had poor results for fantasy purposes since Green Bay's Week 10 bye, as he's topped 250 yards just twice and thrown for multiple scores only three times in seven games.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: QBs to Start

Love struggled against Detroit in Week 9 at home in bad weather with 10.9 Fantasy points, but he has responded since, scoring at least 22.2 Fantasy points in two of his past three games. I'm expecting this game to be a shootout, and the projected total is 51.5 points, which is the highest of the week. The Lions are beat up defensively coming into this game, and Caleb Williams just scored 32.1 Fantasy points at Detroit in Week 13. Love should be considered a top-10 Fantasy quarterback in this NFC North showdown.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Throws two scores in lopsided win

Love completed 13 of 23 pass attempts for 163 yards and two touchdowns while rushing once for two yards in Sunday's 38-10 win over San Francisco. Love wasn't needed much in Sunday's victory against an opponent starting its backup quarterback, attempting his third-fewest pass attempts this season. The 26-year-old threw for multiple touchdowns for the first time since Week 7, confirming his improved health following a stretch during which he likely wasn't playing at full strength. Love will stay in Green Bay on a short week to host the Dolphins this Thursday on Thanksgiving.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Hits on big plays in win

Love completed 13 of 17 passes for 261 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Packers' 20-19 win over the Bears on Sunday. He also rushed four times for 18 yards and another score. Love finished the game with an elevated average of 15.4 yards per attempt, hitting on several chunk plays through the air over the course of the narrow win. The longest was a 60-yarder to Christian Watson on the second play of what would turn out to be the Packers' game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, one Love capped off himself with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:59 remaining. Love now has 534 passing yards on 36 completions over his last two games and appears to be fully past the groin injury that limited him going into the Week 10 bye, setting him up well for a Week 12 home showdown against the 49ers next Sunday.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Struggles in rainy conditions

Love completed 23 of 39 passes for 273 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 24-14 loss to the Lions. Love played through a groin injury that limited his practice participation throughout the week. At first glance, his stat line appears decent, as he averaged 7.0 yards per attempt and topped 250 passing yards fourth time in seven games. However, he threw a pick-six just before halftime on an ill-advised play and later missed Dontayvion Wicks wide open in the end zone as the Packers tried to make a comeback early in the fourth quarter. Love has now failed to throw a touchdown in consecutive starts as the Packers head into their bye week.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Listed as questionable

Love (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports. As promised earlier by coach Matt LaFleur, who otherwise declined to give hints about whether or not Love will play. Malik Willis will fill in as the starting QB if Love ends up inactive ahead of the 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff despite managing limited practice participation Thursday and Friday.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Has chance to play Sunday

Coach Matt LaFleur said Love (groin) was limited at Friday's practice and will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game versus the Lions, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports. In the wake of exiting early from a Week 8 win at Jacksonville, Love was diagnosed with a strained groin and deemed day-to-day. He proceeded to sit out Wednesday's practice before logging back-to-back capped sessions to wrap up Week 9 prep. The Packers are giving him a chance to be available this weekend, as LaFleur wouldn't definitively say one way or another whether Love will be able to suit up Sunday, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Malik Willis would get the start if Love isn't able to go.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: 'Realistic' chance of playing Week 9

Love (groin), who didn't practice Wednesday, believes it's "realistic" for him to play Sunday against the Lions, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. Love was diagnosed with a strained groin after exiting this past Sunday's win over Jacksonville, prompting the Packers to label him day-to-day. Backup quarterback Malik Willis ended up directing the offense in the second half en route to a 30-27 win, and he would fill in for Love for a third time this season if the latter isn't cleared to suit up. Love would put himself in a better position to retain his starting role this weekend against the Lions by returning to practice Thursday or Friday.

  • Packers' Jordan Love: Not practicing Wednesday

Love (groin) won't take part in Wednesday's practice, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. Love got some work in on an exercise bike but did not ultimately take the practice field with teammates, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. The quarterback was knocked out of Green Bay's win over Jacksonville this past weekend and is considered day-to-day heading into a pivotal matchup with NFC North-leading Detroit this Sunday. Love still has a chance to play Sunday, but he now has only two more opportunities to log some practice activity in advance of the contest. Malik Willis will start at quarterback for the Packers in the event that Love can't go.
