Murphy-Bunting was competing for a depth role on defense but was unable to impress enough to earn a roster spot. The 29-year-old missed the entirety of last season while recovering from a knee injury suffered last May and will now look to find a new opportunity with another team.

Sean Murphy-Bunting: Signs with Buccaneers' practice squad
The Buccaneers signed Murphy-Bunting to the practice squad Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
A 2019 second-round pick of the Buccaneers, Murphy-Bunting has spent the last two seasons on one-year stints with the Titans and Cardinals, with the latter squad releasing him Sunday. Murphy-Bunting's experience should give him a good chance to earn a promotion to the active roster at some point during the regular season.

Cardinals' Sean Murphy-Bunting: Practicing during OTAs
Murphy-Bunting (knee) has been participating during Cardinals OTAs and has been working as a nickel corner, Zach Gershman of the team's official site reports.
Murphy-Bunting tore his ACL and also suffered some MCL damage last May and missed all of the 2025 season. Just over a year later, the veteran defender is back on the field during OTAs, and he's been taking on a different role in the nickel-corner spot. Murphy-Bunting has played mostly outside corner during his tenure in Arizona, but the team has a need in the slot with Garrett Williams expected to be out at the beginning of the campaign while recovering from a torn Achilles. Williams will presumably retake the role upon his return, but in the meantime, Murphy-Bunting should see plenty or work in the slot. He was ample experience there, having played the position frequently earlier in his career while with the Buccaneers.

Cardinals' Sean Murphy-Bunting: Sticking with Arizona
Murphy-Bunting (knee) agreed to a restructured contract with the Cardinals on Sunday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Murphy-Bunting missed the entire 2025 season with an undisclosed knee issue after being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list last May. The 28-year-old tallied 52 tackles and five passes defended, including three interceptions, over 15 regular-season games during his first season with the Cardinals in 2024. Murphy-Bunting is entering the final year of his contract in 2026.

Coach Jonathan Gannon said Wednesday that Murphy-Bunting underwent surgery on his knee to address the injury that landed him on Arizona's NFI list, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
It's still not fully clear what happened, but the update sheds some light on the circumstances surrounding the unusual development for Murphy-Bunting. He'll now have to begin rehabbing from the procedure, and in the meantime, his absence will force Arizona to lean more heavily on 2025 second-rounder Will Johnson and 2024 second-rounder Max Melton.

Cardinals' Sean Murphy-Bunting: Done for season
Murphy-Bunting (undisclosed) was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list by the Cardinals on Thursday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
The type of injury was not disclosed by either Murphy-Bunting or the Cardinals, but the nature of the transaction means that it happened away from team facilities and that the cornerback will miss the 2025 season. Murphy-Bunting started 15 games for the Cardinals in 2024, the first year of a three-year free-agent contract he signed the previous March. Arizona has two other experienced corners, Starling Thomas and Garrett Williams, back from last year as well as 2025 second-round pick Will Johnson.

Murphy-Bunting finished the 2024 regular seasons with 52 tackles (30 solo), five pass defenses (three interceptions) and two forced fumbles across 15 games.
Murphy-Bunting signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract with the Cardinals in March of 2024 after playing with the Titans in 2023. He finished second in combined tackles among Cardinals' corners behind Garrett Williams (58), and Murphy-Bunting's three interceptions matched a career high he set during his rookie season in 2019 with the Buccaneers. Murphy-Bunting and Starling Thomas project to be Arizona's starting outside corners in 2025, though they should get competition from rookies Max Melton (wrist) and Elijah Jones (ankle) during training camp.
