Johnson took a step in the right direction after sitting out practice entirely Wednesday. He still has a chance to avoid an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Ravens if Johnson can upgrade to full participation Friday. After missing Wednesday's practice due to an illness, Johnson got back in the mix Thursday. The Saints' injury report will clarify whether he was a limited or full participant. Regardless, this is a good sign for Johnson's availability heading into Sunday's game against the Ravens.

Johnson's absence from Wednesday's practice was likely a precautionary measure, and the veteran tight end will have two more chances to return to practice ahead of the Saints' Week 2 road tilt against the Ravens on Sunday. Johnson had a career year in 2025 and produced a 3-54-1 receiving line (on seven targets) during the Saints' 31-30 overtime loss to the Lions in Week 1. With rookie first-round wideout Jordyn Tyson (hamstring) on injured reserve, Johnson, Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele are likely going to be the go-to targets in the passing game for quarterback Tyler Shough.

Johnson caught three of his seven targets for 54 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-30 overtime loss to the Lions.
Johnson had a strong Week 1, with Tyler Shough targeting the No. 1 tight end at the third-highest rate among Saints players. Only Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele saw more targets, but Johnson's 18.0 yards per reception were second only to Olave's 18.2.

Saints' Juwan Johnson: Doesn't play during preseason
Johnson didn't see any action during the Saints' three-game preseason slate.
Johnson is locked in atop the depth chart at tight end for New Orleans, and with Jordyn Tyson (hamstring) set to miss at least the first four games of the season and no clear WR2 on the roster, Johnson could have a significant pass-catching role out of the gates. Tyler Shough has already predicted a big season for his former college teammate after Johnson was fantasy's overall TE5 in yards per game and TE8 in catches per game following last season's Rashid Shaheed trade ahead of Week 10. Turning 30 years old Sept. 13, Johnson is coming off a 77-889-3 campaign on 102 targets last season.

Saints' Juwan Johnson: Remains top tight end
Johnson is listed as the starting tight end on the Saints' unofficial depth chart.
Johnson is coming off a breakout season in which he easily set career bests with 77 receptions and 889 yards, so it's little surprise that he remains the top tight end for the Saints. Now trailing him on the depth chart are offseason acquisition Noah Fant and rookie third-rounder Oscar Delp.
