Smith was released Friday by the Steelers, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Smith was signed in late January after spending much of last season on the team's practice squad, but he's now been released due to the fact that the Steelers have to cut their roster down to 90 players. He'll look for an opportunity with another team where he can provide depth at running back, but Smith is unlikely to play a notable role in 2017.

Smith spent much of the season on the Steelers' practice squad after being waived with an injury designation from the Chargers in September. He'll look to land a spot at the bottom of Pittsburgh's running back depth chart in 2017.

Smith (undisclosed) was waived by the Chargers on Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Smith briefly had a good shot to make the final roster after Brandon Oliver suffered a torn Achilles in Sunday's preseason game against Minnesota. In a stroke of poor luck, Smith suffered an undisclosed injury shortly thereafter, leading the Chargers to waive him Tuesday with an injury designation. Gus Johnson and undrafted rookie Kenneth Farrow are the team's only healthy running backs behind Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead.

Chargers' Dreamius Smith: Could get shot at No. 3 job
Smith and Kenneth Farrow may have a shot to earn the No. 3 running back role, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
No. 3 running back Branden Oliver suffered a major Achilles injury during Sunday's preseason game against the Chargers, allowing Smith to get significant run throughout the second half. The 2015 UDFA only had 31 yards on 13 carries, but he did add three catches for 30 yards on four targets. Farrow, meanwhile, did not register a single touch, suggesting he's behind Smith in the pecking order. It is possible the Chargers aren't comfortable with either player, in which case the team could delve into the free-agent market after more cuts are made.
