  • Vikings' Jonathan Allen: Picks up sack in Week 8 loss

Allen posted five tackles (two solo), including 1.0 sacks, in a loss to the Chargers on Thursday. Allen made a pair of nice plays early in the fourth quarter, assisting on a tackle of RB Kimani Vidal for a one-yard loss and then sacking Justin Herbert three plays later. After going without a sack in each of his first five games, Allen now has 1.5 sacks over the past two weeks. His regular-season career high is 9.0 sacks, which he recorded in 2021 with Washington.

  • Vikings' Jonathan Allen: Pressures QB in season opener

Allen had three total tackles, a QB hit and five QB hurries, according to Pro Football Focus, in Monday's win at Chicago. Allen had a mixed performance tackling with two missed tackles and two stops, but was impactful in the pass rush. He played on 52 of the defense's 67 snaps as he'll be mainstay on the interior defensive line.

  • Vikings' Jonathan Allen: Agrees to deal with Vikings

Allen is signing a three-year, $60 million contract with the Vikings, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The Commanders released Allen on Friday after he failed to generate trade interest on his old contract. His new deal isn't quite at the top of the market for defensive tackles, but it can't really be called a pay cut either. A pectoral tear limited the 30-year-old to eight games in his final season with the Commanders, but he had at least 5.5 sacks and 17 QB hits in each of the three preceding campaigns, maintaining a reputation as one of the league's more impactful interior pass rushers. Allen's work against the run has been less impressive, especially in recent years, but he's never lacked for tackles, topping 60 in six straight seasons before slumping to 53 in 2023 and then 19 in 2024 (301 snaps).

  • Jonathan Allen: Visiting Minnesota

The Vikings are hosting Allen for a visit Monday, Kevin Seifert of ESPN reports. Allen, who was released by the Commanders on Friday after having previously been given permission to seek a trade, is already exploring his options in free agency. The 30-year-old defensive tackle racked up 19 tackles (16 solo), including 3.0 sacks, across eight regular-season appearances in 2024, and he could help fill a position of need for Minnesota's defensive line.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Activated off IR, will play Sunday

The Commanders activated Allen (pectoral) from injured reserve Saturday, and he carries no injury designation heading into Sunday's game against the Falcons. Allen suffered a torn left pectoral muscle during the Commanders' Week 6 loss to the Ravens. He was designated to return from injured reserve Dec. 18 and was activated off IR after logging full practices all week. Allen will likely reclaim his starting spot at defensive tackle alongside Daron Payne while Jer'Zhan Newton and Sheldon Day provide rotational depth.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Could return Sunday

Allen (pectoral) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Falcons. Allen has missed the Commanders' last nine games due to a pectoral injury, but he was designated to return from injured reserve Dec. 18 and practiced in full throughout the week, so it appears he's trending toward playing in Week 17. However, the 29-year-old must still be added to Washington's active roster in order to suit up Sunday. If activated, Allen is likely to start alongside Daron Payne as part of the Commanders' top interior defensive line duo.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Listed as full participant

The Commanders listed Allen (pectoral) as a full participant in Wednesday's practice estimate. Allen was designated for return from injured reserve on Dec. 18 and now appears closer to making his return. The 2017 first-round pick hasn't played since the team's Week 6 loss versus the Ravens but should have a chance to play in Sunday's game versus the Falcons.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Out vs. Eagles

Allen (pectoral) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Philadelphia, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Allen has been recovering from a torn left pectoral muscle he suffered Week 6. The veteran defensive tackle was designated to return from injured reserve this Wednesday, but he'll miss at least another game as he aims to return for Week 17 or 18. Allen recorded 15 tackles (13 solo), including 2.0 sacks, across the first six games of the season.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Practice window opens

The Commanders designated Allen (pectoral) for return from injured reserve Wednesday. Allen, who has been recovering from a torn left pectoral muscle sustained during Week 6, will have 21 days to be evaluated at practice without counting against the 53-man roster. He can be fully activated at any point during that stretch, meaning Allen could tentatively retake the field as early as Sunday versus the Eagles, depending on his recovery progress. John Keim of ESPN.com reports, though, that while Allen's injury wasn't as bad as initially feared, his best chances of returning in the regular season will come Week 17 or Week 18.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Shifts to IR

The Commanders placed Allen (pectoral) on injured reserve Wednesday. Allen sustained a torn left pectoral muscle in the Commanders' Week 6 loss to the Ravens, so Wednesday's move to IR comes as no surprise. Expect 2024 second-round pick Jer'Zhan Newton to see increased work with Washington's first-team defensive line alongside Daron Payne while Allen recovers from this injury.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Won't return due to pectoral injury

Allen has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Ravens due to a pectoral injury, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Allen recorded two solo tackles before leaving the game in the second half. Dorance Armstrong (ribs) has also been ruled out, so Washington's defensive line will be extremely shorthanded the rest of the way.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Logs sack in win

Allen registered five tackles (four solo), including 1.0 sack, in Washington's win Sunday versus Cleveland. Allen has now recorded a sack in back-to-back games, bringing his total on the season to 2.0. He'll next set his sights on bringing down Lamar Jackson during the Week 6 matchup versus the Ravens.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Logs first sack of season in Week 4

Allen tallied five tackles (four solo), including 1.0 sacks, during Sunday's 42-14 win over the Cardinals. Allen registered his first regular-season sack Sunday since Week 11 of last year, when he got to Kyler Murray for a seven-yard loss late in the third quarter. Allen did see a slight decrease in his snap count compared to Week 3 against the Bengals, but that was due to game script as the Commanders led by a large margin in the fourth quarter. Through the first four regular-season games, Allen has totaled nine tackles (seven solo), including 1.0 sacks.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Records 5.5 sacks

Allen (knee) finished 2023 with 53 tackles (30 solo), 5.5 sacks and one pass defense in 16 games. The only game he missed was Week 18, and he recorded the second-most QB hits (19) of his career despite having four other seasons with more sacks. On the other hand, PFF graded Allen at No. 124 out of 137 qualified interior defensive linemen for run defense, suggesting that what had once been one of his strengths as a DE on early downs has become a weakness now that he lines up at defensive tackle for about three-fourths of his snaps. It is possible a new coaching staff in Washington will want Allen on the edge more, though the 300-pounder has always manned the interior at least half the time since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2017. He has two years remaining on a four-year, $72 million extension, with non-guaranteed base salaries of $14 million (2024) and $15.5 million (2025) perhaps creating some question about his future under new management in Washington.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Productive in loss

Allen logged five total tackles (three solo) in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the 49ers. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle put up the third-most tackles he's recorded in a game this season Sunday, bringing his total up to 53 stops on the year. Allen has had another productive year for the Commanders' defense, appearing in all 16 of the team's games thus far and ranking second in both tackles for loss (10) and sacks (5.5). The 28-year-old will look to end the season on a positive note in Week 18's game against the Cowboys.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Tallies sack in loss

Allen accumulated four solo tackles and one sack in the Commanders' Week 10 loss to the Seahawks. Allen's sack brings his season total up to four across 10 games. He saw the field for 62 defensive snaps (84 percent), which was his second highest total of the season. The defensive tackle will attempt to make it back-to-back games with a sack in Week 11 when Washington hosts the Giants.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Potential trade candidate

Allen and the other Commanders defensive linemen are subject to trade rumors in advance of Tuesday's trade deadline, Jay Glazer reported on Fox NFL Sunday. Allen has expressed some discontent with the organization and thus might be the most likely of the Commanders linemen to go. He's cleared to play for Sunday against the Eagles this week.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Nursing plantar fasciitis

Allen has been dealing with plantar fasciitis, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Head coach Ron Rivera indicated the issue is not serious. Still, it is worth noting, and it would not be surprising to see the Commanders exercise caution with Allen in the immediate future. The primary goal is to make sure the team's starting right defensive tackle is at full health when Week 1 comes around.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Active against Detroit

Allen (groin) is active Week 2 against Detroit. Allen logged three tackles and a sack across 50 snaps on defense in the Week 1 matchup against Jacksonville, but he came away with a groin injury that resulted in a late addition to the injury report this week. That ultimately won't prevent the sixth-year veteran from suiting up and resuming his regular role on the Washington defensive front.

  • Commanders' Jonathan Allen: Cleared for Week 2

Allen doesn't have an injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Lions. Allen underwent a precautionary MRI on Monday after tweaking his groin during Washington's season-opening win. He was limited at practice Wednesday and Thursday, but he appears to be fine heading into Week 2. The 2017 first-round pick recorded three tackles and a sack in Week 1 and will look to continue his strong play against Detroit on Sunday.
