McConnell has spent the past three seasons in the G League, including the 2025-26 campaign with Houston's affiliate, Rio Grande Valley. His familiarity with the organization could position him for another stint with the Vipers if he's waived before Monday's roster deadline. The guard is unlikely to factor into Houston's NBA rotation.

McConnell signed with the Rockets earlier Friday but was waived shortly after, likely paving the way for him to join their G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The Rutgers product spent last season with the Hornets' G League team, the Greensboro Swarm, where he averaged 5.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals across 26 appearances.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said Friday that McConnell (concussion) is on track to play in Monday's preseason game against the Spurs, Rylan Stiles of Thunderous Intentions reports.
McConnell suffered a concussion during the 2023 Summer League but is healthy for the preseason. McConnell will look to impress this preseason in order to obtain a regular-season roster spot with the Thunder.
