Paez (1-1) picked up the win in relief during the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
The 22-year-old righty completed a combined shutout with Brayan Bello in the nightcap, with Paez tossing 54 of 77 pitches for strikes to earn his first career big-league win. It's an impressive rebound after he coughed up eight runs in 3.2 frames during his first appearance for Boston back on Sept. 1. Despite this performance, Paez isn't likely to have a spot on the team's postseason roster.

Paez will be up to provide length out of the bullpen in the nightcap, replacing Raymond Burgos on the active roster. Paez has allowed a whopping 14 runs in 6.2 innings in the majors, but he fared well in five starts with Worcester this season, posting a 2.08 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 26:3 K:BB in 21.2 innings. He got off to a rough start by allowing a solo homer to Dominic Canzone in the first inning before allowing five runs in the second frame, three of which came on a Randy Arozarena home run. Paez went on to allow a run in each of the next two frames before being pulled in the fourth after tossing 87 pitches (55 strikes) and generating eight whiffs. It's not the way the right-hander was hoping his major-league debut would go, and he'll likely head back to the minors if the Red Sox revert to a five-man rotation.

A Rule 5 Draft pick by the White Sox over the winter, Paez was returned to the Red Sox in early April after making three appearances for Chicago. The right-hander spent most of the campaign at Double-A Portland, where he posted a 4.41 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 56:5 K:BB across 49 innings. He made his last three appearances for Worcester and was dominant while scattering seven hits and posting an 18:2 K:BB across 12.1 frames. Paez will likely be in store for just one start while the Red Sox build in extra rest for Sonny Gray ahead of his next turn through the rotation.

A skinny 6-foot-1 righty from the Red Sox's farm system, Paez only logged 19.1 innings at Double-A in 2025 due to a calf injury. Long known for his stingy control, Paez's walk rates have been below four percent at ever stop since the start of the 2023 season. He lacks impact stuff, but if the White Sox can coax a bit more velocity out of his 91-92 mph fastball, Paez could make it as a back-end starter. He'll likely work as a low-leverage reliever for as long as he sticks on Chicago's active roster in 2026.
