Mariners' Brendan Donovan: Will miss more than minimum time

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Sunday that Donovan will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection for his strained left groin as well as his adductor and is expected to resume baseball activity in 2-to-3 weeks, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Seattle placed Donovan on the 10-day injured list Sunday, and given that he won't be on track to resume on-field activity for at least another two weeks, he's not a candidate to return to action when first eligible May 26 and will see his absence extend into June. Donovan previously missed about three weeks of action earlier this season after straining the same groin, so the Mariners could proceed more cautiously with bringing him back from the shelf this time around. For however long Donovan is out of action, Colt Emerson is expected to serve as the Mariners' everyday third baseman.

Donovan had already been left out of the starting nine for a second straight game Sunday against the Padres, but he'll now wind up being shelved until at least May 26 while he tends to an aggravation of the injury that previously sent him to the IL back on April 20. In a corresponding move, the Mariners called up top prospect Colt Emerson from Triple-A Tacoma. Emerson will start at third base Sunday in his MLB debut and should serve as the top option at the position while Donovan is on the shelf.

"It doesn't seem like it's going to be a longer-term situation," said manager Dan Wilson. "But again, we just kind of have to assess it as we go." Wilson also mentioned that Donovan's groin injury seems to be related to a sports hernia, which required surgery last October and forced him to miss the last month of the 2025 season while with St. Louis. "This is just something that we're going to take as cautiously as we can. It's early and we want to give him the best chance to get back and be 100%," noted Wilson.
