Although Burrows fired 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes and amassed 17 swinging strikes, he was perhaps a bit too haphazard in targeting the zone Monday. The Mariners tagged him for four-extra base hits, with two leaving the yard off the bat of Josh Naylor, and Burrows wound up giving up a career-high 11 hits and matching a career worst in runs allowed. The 26-year-old right-hander is off to a rocky start in his Astros tenure, posting a 6.55 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB over 22 frames, but he'll have an opportunity to turn things around in a favorable home matchup against the Cardinals this weekend.

Burrows' big mistake was serving up a two-run homer to Willi Castro in the fourth inning. Aside from that, he scattered several hits but benefitted from two double plays and gave up just one additional run. However, Houston eked out just one run of support, sending Burrows to his second loss through three starts. The right-hander will carry a 5.63 ERA and 15:6 K:BB across 16 innings into his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Mariners in Seattle.

Manager Joe Espada said this weekend that Burrows (lower leg) will start the Astros' second game of the season Friday against the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Burrows was lifted from his final Grapefruit League start Saturday against the Mets after 5.1 innings and 77 pitches and being drilled in the lower left leg by a comebacker, but his removal was seemingly precautionary. The right-hander is stretched out enough to handle a typical starter's workload and should face no restrictions next weekend in what will be his Astros debut. Burrows pitched to a 3.94 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 96 innings with Pittsburgh last season, but after securing just two victories in his 19 starts, he should have a better chance at capturing wins in 2026 while he's backed by a stronger Houston offense.

Burrows was immediately taken out of the game after taking a 92-mph groundball off his lower left leg in the sixth inning. His removal may have been precautionary -- especially since he had already thrown 77 pitches -- though the Astros should provide more details on his status in the near future.
Burrows pitched two innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League matchup against the Cardinals, allowing no runs on one hit and a walk while striking out two.
It was an encouraging Astros debut for Burrows, who got the start against a St. Louis lineup that featured some projected Opening Day starters. Burrows, who joined Houston via trade in December, is coming off a solid rookie season with the Pirates, where he posted a 3.94 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 9.1 K/9 across 96 innings. The right-hander is expected to slot into the middle of a new-look Astros' rotation.
The Astros are acquiring Burrows from the Pirates on Friday in a three-team trade that also includes the Rays, Chandler Rome, Stephen J. Nesbitt and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Burrows opened 2025 in the minors but made his season debut for the Pirates in May, and he delivered a strong rookie campaign with a 3.94 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 97:31 K:BB across 96 innings. The right-hander is the only piece heading to the Astros in the deal, with Brandon Lowe, Mason Montgomery and Jake Mangum moving to Pittsburgh while the Rays get Anderson Brito and Jacob Melton. Burrows should slot into the middle of Houston's rotation during his sophomore campaign.

In an effort to keep Burrows' workload in check down the stretch, the Pirates deployed him in relief for his last two appearances, but the right-hander will slot back into the rotation this week as Pittsburgh opens a three-game set in Baltimore. Even though he's starting again, Burrows is still likely to be subject to an unspecified innings and/or pitch limit, making it difficult to count on him pitching long enough to qualify for a win. In his most recent outing this past Wednesday against the Dodgers, Burrows had piggybacked Braxton Ashcraft, but the two pitchers could reverse roles Tuesday. Ashcraft isn't listed as a starter for the series in Baltimore, so he'll presumably be available to work behind Burrows.
