Woods Richardson (1-7) notched the win Wednesday against the Red Sox, allowing no runs on three hits and three walks in three innings. He struck out one.
Woods Richardson landed only 28 of his 55 offerings for strikes, but he still managed to keep Boston off the board en route to getting into the win column for the first time this year. After being jettisoned by the Twins earlier this season, the 25-year-old right-hander is up to seven scoreless frames covering two outings in bulk relief with the Blue Jays. Even so, Woods Richardson has a 6.75 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 30:28 K:BB over 54.2 innings on the campaign and could be relegated to mop-up duties more frequently once Shane Bieber (elbow) is ready to make his season debut.

The Blue Jays acquired Woods Richardson from the Twins on Wednesday in exchange for cash, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
Minnesota designated Woods Richardson for assignment last weekend after he put up a 7.74 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over 47.2 innings. He'll reclaim a 40-man roster spot upon rejoining the Blue Jays organization, with whom he spent parts of three seasons in the minors. Woods Richardson could fill an immediate need for the big club in the rotation or as a long-relief arm, as the Blue Jays currently have 10 pitchers on the injured list.

Woods Richardson was called upon to start after Kendry Rojas was a late scratch due to an elbow issue. The starting role wasn't new to Woods Richardson -- he started for the 10th time through 12 outings this season -- but the last-minute adjustment may have played a part in his poor outing. The right-hander struggled with his control, throwing just 40 of 67 pitches for strikes while issuing three free passes, with all three coming around to score. The final blow for Woods Richardson was a bases-clearing double by Randal Grichuk, which ended the hurler's outing after just 2.2 frames. Rojas had been scheduled to work as Minnesota's sixth starter Thursday, and that may not have been a long-term rotation structure, so Woods Richardson could return to the bullpen after Thursday's rough outing.

Though Rojas wasn't built up enough to handle a typical starter's workload and was lifted after tossing four scoreless frames, the Twins opted to use six bullpen arms to cover the final five innings rather than calling upon Woods Richardson to serve as a bulk reliever. The right-hander has a 9.79 ERA across his last seven outings (30.1 innings), during which he's yielded at least five runs on five occasions while failing to fan more than three in any appearance. Still without a win in 2026, Woods Richardson won't be a recommended fantasy option when he brings a 7.71 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 20:20 K:BB through 42 frames overall into his next scheduled matchup versus Houston.

Washington catcher Keibert Ruiz in particular had Woods Richardson's number, plating three runs on a pair of doubles versus the hurler. It's been a struggle in 2026 so far for Woods Richardson, who has surrendered at least four runs in five of his last six starts while fanning three or fewer each time out during that period. Still winless on the campaign, the right-hander will bring a ghastly 6.92 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 19:16 K:BB over 39 innings into his next scheduled outing versus Miami.

A single swing accounted for all of the right-hander's damage Tuesday, as a Francisco Lindor three-run homer in the third inning gave New York the initial lead. The outing was a slight step in the right direction for Woods Richardson after he had allowed 16 hits and 12 runs combined over his previous two starts. The right-hander has been tagged for 12 runs (11 earned) over his last two outings, and he'll carry a 6.10 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 11:7 K:BB through 20.2 innings into his next start, which is set to come on the road next week against the Mets.
