  • Angels' Greg Mahle: Destined for Triple-A

Mahle cleared waivers Wednesday and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The southpaw was designated for assignment Saturday to make room on the 40-man for big-league bullpen help, but given that he was already on Salt Lake's roster, this move was primarily procedural. Mahle will likely continue acting as an organizational depth piece for the Angels moving forward.

  • Angels' Greg Mahle: Designated for assignment

Mahle was designated for assignment Saturday, the Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher reports.

The Angels brought up bullpen reinforcement (Jose Valdez and Daniel Wright) and needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, so Mahle was the casualty. He has a 3.60 ERA and four strikeouts in 10 innings of relief at Triple-A this season.

  • Angels' Greg Mahle: Will compete for bullpen spot

Mahle will compete for a spot in the bullpen this spring.

Mahle's big league debut didn't go as he had planned, finishing with a 5.40 ERA and a mediocre 1.40 K/BB ratio. He will have to do a better job at limiting the walks while throwing a fastball that sits in the high 80s. Despite the disappointing debut, Mahle will compete for a back of the bullpen job due to the Angels' lack of organizational arms.

  • Angels' Greg Mahle: Optioned to Triple-A

Mahle was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake following Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Pedro Moura of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Mahle stuck around despite struggling a lot in his relief appearances but his outing Wednesday appears to have been the final nail in the coffin. The 23-year-old southpaw will now head back to minors for some more seasoning but still has plenty of time to work his way back into the Angels' bullpen.

  • Angels' Greg Mahle: Hits rough patch in May

Mahle gave up six earned runs in 8.2 innings during the month of May.

After a strong start to his rookie season, Mahle has seen his numbers swell and he now sits with a 4.02 ERA and 1.60 WHIP on the season. Opponents have put together a .276/.391/.379 line against Mahle, with much of that damage coming from his lack of control, as he's walked nine batters in just 15.2 innings. However, because four of the seven runs he's allowed came in just a 4.1-inning span, the Angels will likely be patient with Mahle and see if he can recover before sending him back down to Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Greg Mahle: Picks up first major league win Sunday

Mahle tossed a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Garrett Richards on Sunday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one, to pick up his first major league win in a 9-6 victory over the Rangers.

He's been solid in relief for the Angels this season, posting a 1.13 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 5:4 K:BB in eight innings over 10 appearances, but Mahle's main value prior to Sunday had come from his four holds. The Angels don't have any established left-handers in their bullpen, so Mahle is likely to continue being a sneaky source of holds as long as he can remain effective.
