Ravens 'a little frustrated' with running game

The struggles of the Ravens' run game persisted Week 6 vs. Green Bay. Ray Rice managed just 34 rushing yards on 14 carries, while backup running back Bernard Pierce had 9 rushing yards on six carries.

The Ravens totaled 47 rushing yards on 22 carries in the 19-17 loss.

"We would love to run the ball better," Rice said, per The Baltimore Sun. "It's not something that you plan on, going out there and messing up. The run game has to get better. They created piles. They did what good goal-line defenses do. I never had a fair one-on-one shot with a guy. There was always two or three [defenders] in the hole."

Through six games, the Ravens are averaging 2.7 yards per carry and 72.7 rushing yards per game, which ranks 27th in the NFL.

"What you saw out there is not what we put out in practice, we practiced so hard," Rice said. "I'd use the words, 'a little frustrated.' This is one of the hardest-working teams in the NFL, I believe. I know for a fact what we get in between weightlifting, practice and everything we do, what we put out there is a little bit frustrating."

  • Cowboys trying to remain upbeat after losing top RB

With the Cowboys preparing to move forward without running back DeMarco Murray, who suffered a sprained MCL Sunday vs. Washington, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team has confidence in running backs Phillip Tanner and Joseph Randle. Backup running back Lance Dunbar sat out Sunday's game with a hamstring injury, but he is expected back soon, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

"We’ll get Dunbar back, and Murray back, and get back to full speed there at running back," Jones said. "But obviously, I think Tanner and Randle, if he can’t go, will do a good job for us."

Randle got most of the work once Murray left the game, but the results weren't great. He rushed for 17 yards on 11 carries, though he had a rushing touchdown. Tanner had just one carry for 2 yards.

"Any time a player comes out of the game and can’t go back in, you’re concerned," Jones said. "We’re playing well with (Murray). There’s a fall-off there, but I also thought it was nice for Randle to get in there and get his feet wet. I think it’s only going to get better for him."

  • Roy Helu RB | LV

Roy Helu racks up 77 yards of total offense

Redskins running back Roy Helu had a productive performance during the second half of Sunday's loss to the Cowboys in Week 6.

Helu had just one catch for an 8-yard gain in the first half. He got more involved offensively once the game got out of hand. He finished the game with 77 yards of total offense, logging 42 yards on six carries (7.0 yards per carry) and 35 on four receptions and six targets in a 31-16 defeat.

Helu will look to be more involved in Week 7 at home against the Bears. Chicago allowed 123 yards on the ground against the Giants in Week 6.

  • Joseph Randle RB | DAL

Joseph Randle steps in for injured DeMarco Murray

Cowboys rookie running back Joseph Randle stepped in for an injured DeMarco Murray and scored his first career touchdown in Sunday's win over the Redskins in Week 6.

Randle filled in for Murray, who left the game in the second quarter with a left knee sprain. He broke for a short, 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to break the game open for Dallas. He finished with 11 carries for 17 yards and a touchdown on the ground and two catches for 15 yards in a 31-16 victory.

The rookie out of Oklahoma State could be in line to take over for Murray if he is unavailable in Week 7 when the Cowboys will take on the Eagles in Philadelphia. The Eagles allowed 94 rushing yards to Tampa Bay in Week 6.

  • Brandon Bolden held in check vs. Saints

Patriots running back Brandon Bolden failed to get going as he took a backseat to Stevan Ridley in Sunday's win over the Saints in Week 6.

Bolden shared carries with LeGarrette Blount early in the first quarter before Ridley took over the rest of the game. He finished with 19 yards on five carries and two catches for nine yards on three targets in a 30-27 victory.

The Patriots will travel to New York to face the Jets in Week 7.

  • Andre Ellington puts up 92 total yards and a touchdown

Cardinals rookie running back Andre Ellington continued to outperform Rashard Mendenhall in the Week 6 loss in San Francisco. Ellington ran seven times for 56 yards -- the third straight game in which he's averaged at least 7 yards per carry -- and caught all five of his targets for 36 yards.

Ellington's 15-yard touchdown run, his first career rushing score, marked the fifth time in six games he's busted a run of at least 14 yards. His 92 total yards were a season high. Ellington has a burst and quickness Mendhenhall lacks, but for now they are splitting snaps fairly evenly.

Ellington faces the Seahawks on Thursday.

  • Ronnie Hillman RB | DAL

Ronnie Hillman picks up four carries

Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman had 4 carries against the Jaguars Week 6.

Knowshon Moreno was the star of the game, combining for 22 touches. Hillman gained 20 yards on his carries, with his longest run going for 11 yards. He caught 2 passes for 16 yards.

Hillman will take on the Colts Week 7.

  • Chris Johnson RB | ARI

    Chris Johnson struggles against Seattle

Titans running back Chris Johnson struggled Week 6 against the Seahawks.

Johnson was bottled up by Seattle, and couldn't produce any big runs on the ground. His longest run went for just 8 yards. He finished the game with 33 yards on 12 carries. Johnson attempted to make up for his struggles on the ground by catching 3 balls for 21 yards.

    He'll take on a tough 49ers defense Week 7.

  • Bernard Pierce RB | DEN

Bernard Pierce denied 1-yard touchdown Week 6

Ravens running back Bernard Pierce was held to less than 10 rushing yards during a 19-17 loss Week 6 vs. Green Bay. Pierce rushed for 9 yards on six carries, while adding two catches for 22 yards.

Pierce, whose season-low for rushing yards is 7, had a chance for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter. However, he was stopped on a 4th-and-goal play. He hasn't had a rushing touchdown in his last three games.

Next up for the Ravens will be Pittsburgh in Week 7.

  • Cordarelle Patterson has two catches for three yards

Vikings wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson caught two passes for three yards in Sunday's 35-10 loss to the Panthers. The three yards were the fewest this season for Patterson, who now has four games with 15 or fewer receiving yards over the first five games. This was the second straight game of single-digit receiving yardage for Patterson.

The Vikings face the Giants in Week 7, on Monday night.
