  • 49ers' Raheem Mostert: Dealing with quad issue

Mostert didn't play in Saturday's preseason game at Kansas City due to a minor quadriceps injury, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Mostert already missed some time during training camp with a concussion, but this marks his first DNP of exhibition season. While just Jerick McKinnon (knee) had a known health concern before this contest, the 49ers backfield has been in regular flux in both of coach Kyle Shanahan's seasons to date. Mostert will look to shed the injury before the team's preseason finale Thursday versus the Chargers.

  • Dalvin Cook RB | DAL

Vikings' Dalvin Cook: Breaks off huge touchdown

Cook carried the ball twice but gained 88 yards and found the end zone in the team's third preseason game against the Cardinals on Saturday.

Cook only appeared on the team's first two offensive drives, but made a statement nonetheless. After having a four-yard rush negated by penalty to open the second series, Cook took another handoff and cut back through a large hole before outpacing the Cardinals' secondary for an 85-yard score. While it shouldn't be expected that Cook will see much more action prior to the regular season, he proved plenty explosive in his brief appearance.

  • D'Onta Foreman RB | CLE

Colts' D'Onta Foreman: Reaches injury settlement

The Colts waived Foreman (biceps) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Saturday, NFL insider Adam Caplan reports.

Foreman's tenure with the Colts didn't last long as the former Texan suffered a torn biceps just two weeks after being claimed off waivers by Indianapolis. The injury settlement will allow Foreman to seek another destination, but a four-month recovery period awaits.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Sitting out Saturday

Montgomery isn't expected to suit up for Saturday's preseason game at Indianapolis, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.

The same can be said for fellow running backs Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis. Once Week 1 rolls around, Montgomery seems to be the leader for early down work out of the backfield, with Davis serving as his primary competition. Meanwhile, Cohen is slated for his usual change-of-pace role.

  • Zach Zenner RB | NO

Lions' Zach Zenner: Falling behind in job battle

Zenner carried four times for 21 yards during Friday's preseason game against the Bills.

If this game was any indication, Zenner has fallen behind Ty Johnson for the No. 3 role at running back. He still has a solid chance of making the roster, though, as Zenner is a standout on special teams and has proven to be a serviceable option when injuries have forced him into playing time on offense in the past.

  • C.J. Anderson RB | LAR

Lions' C.J. Anderson: Gets eight carries in dress rehearsal

Anderson rushed eight times for 24 yards and secured both of his targets for 17 yards during Friday's preseason game against the Bills.

Anderson remains second in line behind Kerryon Johnson for touches, but it's starting to seem possible that Ty Johnson could also cut into Anderson's playing time this season. Ty Johnson, who caught his only pass for an 11-yard touchdown Friday, shares some similarities with the departed Theo Riddick. Perhaps the most significant development for all Lions runners, though, is the possibility that center Frank Ragnow (leg) went down with a potential long-term injury.

  • Ronald Jones RB | DAL

Buccaneers' Ronald Jones: Returns after knee issue

Jones (knee) carried four times for eight yards and failed to bring in his only target during Friday's 13-12 preseason win over the Browns.

Jones dealt with some soreness and swelling in his knee throughout the week, but he shrugged off the issue for this dress rehearsal of sorts. Although he wasn't overly effective, Jones notably mixed in with Peyton Barber throughout the team's opening three drives and outproduced his teammate. It appears the two backs will continue to share the workload during the regular season, with neither player likely to feature much, if any, during Thursday's exhibition finale against Dallas.

  • Dalvin Cook RB | DAL

Vikings' Dalvin Cook: Warming up prior to game

Cook is warming up prior to Saturday's preseason contest against the Cardinals, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.

The Vikings listed a number of players not expected to play Saturday and the third-year tailback wasn't one of them, so it seems likely Cook will get at least some playing time Saturday. How much remains to be seen, and it's possible the 2017 first-round pick could be removed earlier than the rest of his first-string teammates, who are expected to play at least a quarter during the preseason affair.

  • Buccaneers' Andre Ellington: Garners 32 total yards in win

Ellington rushed six times for 21 yards and brought in his sole target for 11 yards in the Buccaneers' 13-12 preseason win over the Browns on Friday.

Ellington and his primary competition for the third running back job, Dare Ogunbowale, saw almost equal opportunity in the contest, with the latter outpacing Ellington by a carry, a rushing yard and a reception apiece. Ellington did provide another solid accounting of himself in the contest and appears to still be in relatively good shape for a roster spot, assuming the team keeps at least four running backs.

  • Buccaneers' Dare Ogunbowale: Another active exhibition

Ogunbowale rushed seven times for 22 yards and brought in two of four targets for 19 yards in the Buccaneers' 13-12 preseason win over the Browns on Friday.

Ogunbowale paced the Buccaneers in carries and rushing yardage, just edging his primary competition for the third running back job, Andre Ellington, in both. The third-year back once again struggled with efficiency on the ground, but it's worth noting he had a pivotal role in the game-winning 16-play drive and also had a seven-yard gain during that series wiped out by a holding penalty. Tellingly, coach Bruce Arians entrusted him with three straight carries from just outside the Browns' 10-yard line as the clock wound down, with Ogunbowale gaining eight yards on those touches. The solid preseason play of both Ogunbowale and Ellington, as well as the latter's prior experience in Arians' offense, could ultimately lead to both backs sticking on the final 53.
