  • Dalvin Cook RB | DAL

Vikings' Dalvin Cook: Inks five-year extension

Cook came to terms Saturday with the Vikings on a five-year, $63 million contract extension, which includes $28 million guaranteed, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

With Cook signed to an extension, there's no longer any risk that he'll hold out this season. Cook now looks set to be the main running back in the Minnesota backfield for this season and beyond. With his contract situation resolved, Cook will turn his focus to the Vikings' season-opening matchup with Green Bay on Sunday. He had a career-high 154 rushing yards in his lone outing against the Packers in 2019, breaking free for a 75-yard touchdown in the Week 2 loss.

  • 49ers' Jerick McKinnon: Could see elevated role Week 1

McKinnon could be in line for primary backup duties behind Raheem Mostert if Tevin Coleman (health concern) is held out due to poor air conditions against the Cardinals on Sunday.

Coleman has sickle cell trait, which puts him at increased risk for contracting breathing problems in unhealthy air conditions like the current one in Santa Clara. The air quality index (AQI) sat between 150-200 Friday at Levi's Stadium, which is extremely poor for even a healthy human. Assuming the game doesn't get postponed, McKinnon would stand to benefit the most if Coleman is held out of the contest. Head coach Kyle Shanahan routinely uses a tandem backfield approach, so whichever player backs up Raheem Mostert should see touches in the low double-digits. McKinnon hasn't logged an official snap since signing a big free-agent contract with San Francisco in 2018, but the 28-year-old could flourish in Shanahan's zone-run scheme that utilizes speedy backs who can catch. Expect a final decision on Coleman's status between now and kickoff Sunday.

  • Chiefs' Darwin Thompson: Limited to special teams

Thompson did not take the field on offense during the opener versus the Texans.

A sixth-round pick by the Chiefs last season, Thompson managed to hold on to a roster spot behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams possibly due, in part, to his familiarity with the playbook. Regardless, he seems to be the clear No. 3 in the rotation and will presumably be limited to special teams as long as the other two are healthy.

  • Chiefs' Darrel Williams: Nine touches in opener

Williams logged seven carries for 23 yards and hauled in two passes for seven yards on two targets in the opener versus the Texans on Thursday.

While Williams was a clear No. 2 behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire, no other running back even aw the field in the opener. This likely points to Williams taking over the lead role should Edwards-Helaire miss time, but he may not see enough action on a weekly basis to justify usage under normal circumstances.

  • Jets' La'Mical Perine: Won't make debut versus Bills

Perine (ankle) is ruled out for Sunday's divisional tilt against Buffalo, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Perine has yet to resume practicing since suffering a low-ankle sprain during the last week of training camp, so he may not yet be close to a return. That the Jets haven't placed Perine on injured reserve for a minimum of three weeks seems to indicate that the rookie will retake the field at some point this month, but even when healthy he's unlikely to handle significant carries behind Le'Veon Bell and Frank Gore.

  • Corey Clement RB | ARI

Eagles' Corey Clement: Ready for Sunday

Clement (quadriceps) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's contest in Washington.

Limited by a quad injury Thursday, Clement returned as a full participant to close out Week 1 preparations. With starting running back Miles Sanders (hamstring) questionable for Sunday, the possibility exists for some touches to filter down to Boston Scott, Clement and Jason Huntley this weekend.

  • Miles Sanders RB | DAL

Eagles' Miles Sanders: Status in question for Sunday

Sanders (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest in Washington.

Sanders missed much of the later stages of training camp due to a hamstring injury, and after being called "day-to-day" Wednesday by coach Doug Pederson, the running back proceeded to log three consecutive limited practices. Clearly, there's some question about Sanders' availability this weekend, but the Eagles will make a decision about 90 minutes before Sunday's 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff. If he's at all hindered or sits out, Pederson will turn to some combination of Boston Scott, Corey Clement (quadriceps) and Jason Huntley to pick up the slack in the Philly backfield.

  • D'Andre Swift RB | CHI

Lions' D'Andre Swift: Cleared to play

Swfit (hip) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Bears, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

Swift was limited at practice throughout the week before upgrading to full participation Friday. With that out of the way, it's his role rather than his health that's the big cause for concern, though the two arguably became intertwined when his hip injury caused a prolonged absence from training camp. In any case, Swift will be part of a backfield that also includes Kerryon Johnson and Adrian Peterson, potentially setting up as a three-man committee to start the year.

  • Justice Hill RB | BAL

Ravens' Justice Hill: Unavailable for Week 1

Hill (thigh) is ruled out for Sunday's season opener against the Browns, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.

Hill's next chance to take the field will come Week 2 against the Texans. With Chris Moore (finger) also ruled out for Sunday's tilt against the Browns, Devin Duvernay and James Proche look like the top candidates to handle kick return duties for the Ravens.

  • Bears' Cordarrelle Patterson: Draws questionable tag

Patterson (knee) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions.

Patterson kicked off the week as a limited participant in practice, but he's now logged back-to-back sessions without restrictions. The 29-year-old kick returner and depth wideout is trending in the right direction for Week 1.
