  • Saints' Jamaal Williams: Not in line to play Sunday

Williams is among the key Saints players who are not expected to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Chargers, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Per Underhill, primary running back Alvin Kamara (suspension) is also slated to watch Sunday's game from the sideline, as just about the entire team's starting offensive skill players will not suit up. This includes quarterback Derek Carr and super-utility player Taysom Hill. Rookie Kendre Miller does appear set to play, as he's fully suited up with a brace on his injured right knee, according to John Hendrix of SI.com. Running backs Darrel Williams, Kirk Merritt (hamstring) and Ellis Merriweather are all in uniform pregame as well, per Hendrix, and it's likely these three will filter in behind Miller as part of the Saints' rushing rotation Sunday.

  • 49ers' Jeremy McNichols: Injures hamstring

McNichols (hamstring) will likely be out for San Francisco's preseason finale against the Chargers, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.

McNichols was competing for the third-string role with Jordan Mason and Tyrion Davis-Price and could now be in danger of not making the final roster because of this injury. The 27-year-old had rushed for 36 yards on 10 carries in the first two preseason games.

  • Mohamed Ibrahim: Let go by Detroit

Ibrahim (undisclosed) was waived by the Lions on Sunday.

Ibrahim signed with Detroit as an undrafted free agent in April. The 24-year-old has been dealing with an undisclosed injury recently, and he'll revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers.

  • Steelers' Anthony McFarland: Inefficient in win

McFarland rushed nine times for two yards while securing both of his targets for 18 yards during Saturday's 27-15 preseason win over Buffalo.

McFarland averaged six yards per carry during the Steelers' preseason opener but was unable to generate as much production on the ground Saturday despite leading the team in carries. The 2020 fourth-rounder is only on the team on a reserve/future contract after spending most of last year on the team's practice squad, but he should have a better chance to make the 53-man roster this season since Benny Snell and Jeremy McNichols are no longer with the team.

  • Jake Funk RB | JAC

Colts' Jake Funk: Scores another preseason TD

Funk had five carries for 18 yards, including a four-yard touchdown, in Saturday's preseason win over Chicago.

Funk scored a rushing touchdown for a second consecutive preseason game, but he's still unlikely to make the Week 1 roster. However, with Jonathan Taylor and Zack Moss out due to injury, anything is possible.

  • Kene Nwangwu RB | NYJ

    Vikings' Kene Nwangwu: Remains sidelined

Nwangwu (undisclosed) did not play in Saturday's preseason loss to Tennessee.

There's been no update on Nwangwu's status, as he's been sidelined for most of training camp. Ty Chandler looks set to begin the season as the No. 2 running back at this point with Nwangwu hurt.

  • Samaje Perine RB | CIN

Broncos' Samaje Perine: Resumes backup role

Perine rushed three times for 22 yards and no receptions in Saturday's preseason loss to San Francisco.

Perine was the second running back to enter Saturday's contest following the healthy return of Javonte Williams (knee). The latter saw the bulk of action on Denver's opening drive, confirming Williams' status as lead back. The 27-year-old should still receive touches as a backup (similar to his time in Cincinnati), especially early in the season while the team eases Williams back into action. However, any hopes for Perine to begin the year as starter if Williams wasn't ready for Week 1 can be safely discarded.

  • Seahawks' Zach Charbonnet: Rips off long run Saturday

Charbonnet rushed three times for 31 yards and brought in his only target for one yard in the Seahawks' 22-14 preseason win over the Cowboys on Saturday night.

The rookie second-round pick netted just two yards on his two carries during Seattle's opening possession, but he finished his night on the ground with a 29-yard scamper off right guard that took the ball to the Cowboys' 38-yard line on the next drive. In terms of the Seahawks' running backs, undrafted rookie SaRodorick Thompson was the only player to outpace Charbonnet in rushing yards on the night. Charbonnet continues to have the inside track to the No. 2 job behind Kenneth Walker heading into the preseason finale against the Packers next Saturday afternoon.

  • Deuce Vaughn RB | DEN

Cowboys' Deuce Vaughn: Another rushing TD

Vaughn rushed five times for 14 yards and a touchdown, brought in his only target for minus-1 yard and returned two kickoffs for 38 yards in the Cowboys' 22-14 preseason loss to the Seahawks on Saturday night.

Vaughn didn't see any touches until the second half, with Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis both slotting in ahead of him. Although he was nowhere near as efficient on a per-carry basis as during Dallas' preseason-opening loss to the Jaguars, Vaughn still made the highlight reel with a nifty 14-yard touchdown run on which he spun away from would-be tacklers to cap off the Cowboys' first second-half drive. He's essentially a lock for a roster spot already, so he may actually see modest playing time in next Saturday night's exhibition finale versus the Raiders while Dowdle and Davis likely play out the final chapter of their job battle.

  • Malik Davis RB | DAL

Cowboys' Malik Davis: Solid production in preseason loss

Davis rushed eight times for 32 yards and returned one kickoff for 20 yards in the Cowboys' 22-14 preseason loss to the Seahawks on Saturday night.

Davis tied Rico Dowdle, who was the first Cowboys back to log a touch, for the team lead in carries and was second to him in rushing yards during what was a productive night for both backs. The second-year pro was exponentially better on the ground than during a preseason-opening loss to the Jaguars in which he netted only four yards on three carries; however, Dowdle's own solid night likely leaves the two very close in their job battle for a backup role heading into next Saturday night's preseason finale versus the Raiders.
