D'Andre Swift RB | CHI
Eagles' D'Andre Swift: Works behind Gainwell in opener
Swift logged 19 of a possible 66 snaps on offense in Sunday's 25-20 win over the Patriots, gaining three yards on one carry and recording one catch on two targets for zero yards.
With Rashaad Penny being made a healthy scratch in Week 1, Kenneth Gainwell started at running back for Philadelphia and parlayed his 41 snaps into 14 carries for 54 yards and four catches for 20 yards, while both Swift and Boston Scott (eight snaps) saw minimal volume. Looking ahead to this Thursday's contest against the Vikings, Swift profiles as a speculative fantasy lineup option, and that will be the case until the Eagles get the former Lion more involved in the offense. That could happen right away however, as after Sunday's tilt, coach Nick Sirianni noted that he didn't "ever want to come out of a game where D'Andre Swift has only two touches." With that in mind, Swift figures to see more opportunities in Week 2, but for now at least he's behind Gainwell in the team's RB pecking order.

Deuce Vaughn RB | DEN
Cowboys' Deuce Vaughn: Does little in debut
Vaughn carried the ball six times for eight yards in Sunday's 40-0 rout of the Giants.
The Cowboys were up 16-0 after the first quarter thanks to their defense and special teams and never looked back, creating some garbage-time opportunities for depth players late in the game. Vaughn failed to impress in his first NFL action, though, and both Rico Dowdle (24 rushing yards on six carries) and KaVontae Turpin (14 yards and a TD on three carries) did more with their chances out of the backfield once Tony Pollard was done for the night. Vaughn made plenty of highlight reels in college and even the preseason, but the 5-foot-6 rookie still has to prove his skills can overcome his size against the highest level of competition.
-
Mike Boone RB | MIA
Texans' Mike Boone: Used as receiving back
Boone caught three of four targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 25-9 loss to the Ravens in Week 1.
Boone was on the field for more snaps (24) than No. 2 back Devin Singletary (16), but that had more to do with the Texans playing from behind and using passing packages. Houston threw the ball 66 percent of the time compared to 34 percent rushing. That may continue to be the case for the rebuilding Texans, which could lead to more targets for Boone. If that happens, he would blow away the career-best 15 targets he had in nine games with Denver last season.
-
Patrick Taylor RB | SF
Packers' Patrick Taylor: Opens as third running back
Taylor had five carries for 22 yards in Sunday's 38-20 victory over the Bears.
Taylor was beaten out for a spot on Green Bay's 53-man roster by fellow running back Emanuel Wilson, but it appears that had more to do with keeping Wilson off waivers, as Taylor worked as Green Bay's third running back in Week 1 after being elevated from the practice squad. He did not get a carry until the game was well in hand, but he was effective with his opportunities. Starting running back Aaron Jones shined in Sunday's game but injured his hamstring, and Jones' backup, AJ Dillon, struggled to get much going. As such, Taylor -- at least to some degree -- is on the fantasy radar heading into a Week 2 clash with the Falcons.
-
Salvon Ahmed RB | CHI
Dolphins' Salvon Ahmed: Plays second fiddle in Week 1
Ahmed took three carries for 11 yards during Sunday's 36-34 win over the Chargers. He failed to secure any of his three targets.
Ahmed worked as the clear top backup to Raheem Mostert in Miami's regular-season opener as rookie De'Von Achane was inactive, but he ultimately saw little work. Miami rarely leaned on its backfield due to the contest's game script, which saw Tua Tagovailoa focus on Tyreek Hill and the receiving game while mostly playing catch-up -- the Dolphins didn't play a single offensive snap with a lead. only moving ahead on the final play. Week 2's divisional matchup against the Patriots could allow the team to deploy a more balanced offensive plan, though Achane could also be involved by that point.
-
Rico Dowdle RB | PIT
Cowboys' Rico Dowdle: Late usage in rout
Dowdle carried the ball six times for 24 yards in Sunday's 40-0 win over the Giants.
The Cowboys' defense and special teams units took control of the game early before Tony Pollard punched in two short TDs, so Dowdle saw most of his action in what was effectively garbage time. Dowdle was more productive than rookie Deuce Vaughn on the same numbers of touches, however. With Pollard locked into the top spot on the backfield depth chart, there may not be many opportunities left over for any other backs, but Dowdle at least seems to be the clear No. 2 option.
-
Pierre Strong Jr. RB | GB
Browns' Pierre Strong: Special teams only in opener
Strong did not play an offensive snap in Sunday's 24-3 win over the Bengals in Week 1.
Strong operated as the No. 3 back but did not see the field while the Browns were on offense. The former Patriot instead played 13 snaps on special teams while Nick Chubb and Jerome Ford handled all the backfield duties. Strong, who was traded to Cleveland in late August, could see a bigger role in the backfield once he's more familiar with the playbook.
-
Jerome Ford RB | WAS
Browns' Jerome Ford: Logs double-digit carries
Ford rushed 15 times for 38 yards, had a red-zone fumble, and was not targeted in Sunday's 24-3 win over the Bengals in Week 1. He did not get a chance to return a kickoff.
Ford had a first-quarter fumble in the red zone, but his gaffe did not end up having an impact on the game. Messy field conditions in Cleveland offer an excuse, but Ford will want to exercise better ball security in his new role as Cleveland's primary backup to Nick Chubb, who had 18 carries for 106 yards. The backfield took a back seat to the wide receivers in terms of targets, as only four passes were directed to running backs (all to Chubb). It was unclear how much use Ford would get after barely seeing time on offense in 2022, but the second-year back was on the field for 30 offensive plays (42 percent share) compared to Chubb's 34 and had as many touches as Kareem Hunt did in last season's opener.
-
Matt Breida RB | SF
Giants' Matt Breida: Gets three touches in season opener
Breida rushed twice for nine yards and caught his only target for minus-three yards in Sunday's season-opening blowout loss to Dallas.
New York played about as terribly as a team can and fell behind big early, so there wasn't a whole lot of action on the ground aside from Daniel Jones' team-leading 13 rushes and Saquon Barkley's 12 totes. With the game far out of reach in the rain late in the fourth quarter, the Giants turned largely to Gary Brightwell, which solidifies Breida's status as the No. 2 RB rather than calls it into question. Nonetheless, there's little doubt that Barkley is expected to work as the team's workhorse back again this season, so Breida isn't likely to see significant action even in more competitive contests.
-
Ezekiel Elliott RB | LAC
Patriots' Ezekiel Elliott: Significant role in Week 1
Elliott rushed the ball seven times for 29 yards and lost a fumble in Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Eagles. He added five receptions on seven targets for 14 yards.
Elliott entered the game on the Patriots' first offensive possession and maintained a significant role even after losing a fumble on the team's second drive. Rhamondre Stevenson started and still led the backfield with 18 total touches, though Elliott was the more effective back on the ground. The exact split in workload remains unclear moving forward, though it appears clear that Elliott will maintain a key role.
