  • Justin Herbert QB | LAC

Chargers' Justin Herbert: Throwing without moving much

Herbert (foot) threw on the field before Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, but he didn't move around much, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Popper notes that the QB mostly threw from a stationary stance during pregame warmups. It's nonetheless a good sign that Herbert has made progress, with the on-field appearance coming a couple days after he was spotted working out in the weight room without a walking boot. Herbert hasn't practiced since the end of July due to a plantar fascia injury, but there hasn't been any indication of concern about his availability for Week 1 against the Raiders.

  • Bo Nix QB | DEN

Broncos' Bo Nix: May be named starter soon

Nix may be named as the Broncos' starting quarterback this week, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.

Stevens expects coach Sean Payton to make an announcement in the coming days, after Nix completed eight of nine passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-2 win over Green Bay while leading the Broncos to 10 points on their first two drives. Nix also was solid in the preseason opener -- 15-for-21 passing for 125 yards and a TD -- and his scrambling has been encouraging from a fantasy standpoint (six rush attempts for 29 yards in two games). Veteran quarterback Jarrett Stidham has been much less impressive this preseason, completing 11 of 18 passes for 102 yards with one rushing TD and two interceptions.

  • Taysom Hill QB | NO

Saints' Taysom Hill: Gets work at RB

Hill rushed five times for 21 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the 49ers.

Hill has already proved himself worthy as both a quarterback and a tight end, but he appears to be putting a focus being a runner this year. On top of taking carries as a running back Sunday, the 34-year-old also served as a lead blocker while lined up as a fullback during the first three offensive series as well. This included his one-yard rushing touchdown on a fullback dive early in the second quarter. Gaining more roster flexibility is generally received well in fantasy, so Hill should be able to carve out a niche role for certain managers this campaign.

  • Broncos' Jarrett Stidham: Outplayed by Nix again

Stidham completed seven of 11 passes for 65 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 27-2 preseason win over the Packers. He added a nine-yard touchdown run on his only rushing attempt.

Stidham watched Bo Nix lead Denver's offense to 10 points on the first two drives, then played the next four drives. The 28-year-old quarterback showed toughness on his touchdown run late in the first half, but that play accounted for Denver's only points during Stidham's time in the game, and he proceeded to throw an interception on the first drive of the third quarter. Stidham seems to have fallen behind the rookie Nix in Denver's quarterback competition heading into next Sunday's preseason finale against the Cardinals, though the team has yet to officially declare a starter for the regular season.

  • Packers' Michael Pratt: Part of team's QB struggles Sunday

Pratt completed 10 of 16 passes for 52 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 27-2 preseason loss to the Broncos. He added one rushing attempt for seven yards.

Sean Clifford started and played the first four drives before Pratt handled the remainder of the game. Neither reserve quarterback led the offense to any points, suggesting that the status quo of Clifford occupying the second spot on the depth chart behind Jordan Love remains intact heading into Green Bay's preseason finale against the Ravens on Saturday.

  • Sean Clifford QB | CIN

Packers' Sean Clifford: Poor showing in preseason start

Clifford started Sunday's 27-2 preseason loss to the Broncos and completed six of 10 passes for 43 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed once for 11 yards.

With Jordan Love getting the night off in Green Bay's second preseason game, Clifford struggled during his four drives in the game, which included an incomplete pass on fourth down to end the opening drive and an interception on Clifford's final throw of the night. Michael Pratt threw for only 52 yards in the remainder of the game, and the team's only points came from the defense courtesy of a safety, so Clifford remains the favorite for the second spot on the quarterback depth chart behind Love heading into the Packers' final preseason game against the Ravens on Saturday.

  • Bo Nix QB | DEN

Broncos' Bo Nix: Shines in preseason start

Nix completed eight of nine passes for 80 yards and a touchdown while adding three rushing attempts for 12 yards in Sunday's 27-2 preseason win over the Packers.

Nix continued his strong preseason in Denver's second exhibition, this time playing the first two drives as the starter. The rookie 12th overall pick had a would-be 14-yard touchdown pass to Javonte Williams called back due to an illegal forward pass penalty on the opening drive as the Broncos settled for a field goal, but Nix bounced back with a two-yard touchdown connection to Tim Patrick on the following possession. Nix has done enough in the preseason to emerge as a favorite over Jarrett Stidham to begin the regular season as Denver's starting quarterback, though the competition may not be officially decided until after the team's game against the Cardinals next Sunday.

  • Derek Carr QB | NO

Saints' Derek Carr: Sharp in second exhibition start

Carr completed seven of nine pass attempts for 47 yards in Sunday's 16-10 preseason loss to the 49ers.

Carr fared better in his second preseason showing after completing just two passes last week against the Cardinals. The veteran failed to reach the 4,000-yard milestone for the second consecutive season in 2023 after achieving the feat four times in as many years prior. The 33-year-old doesn't offer the upside in fantasy he once did, but he still is a reliable starter with little competition at his position heading into Week 1.

  • Brock Purdy QB | SF

49ers' Brock Purdy: Limited work in preseason debut

Purdy completed two of six pass attempts for 11 yards in Sunday's preseason win over the Saints.

Purdy made his preseason debut while a myriad of his teammates remain resting in anticipation of the regular season. The 24-year-old didn't get much work in the three drives he was on the field for, but no one should be evaluating the Iowa State product on what likely will be his lone preseason appearance of 2024. Once the regular season gets under way, Purdy will have his full arsenal of playmakers to dissect opposing defenses with.

  • Kyle Trask QB | TB

Buccaneers' Kyle Trask: Outperforms Wolford in loss

Trask completed 12 of 19 passes for 108 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and rushed once for four yards in the Buccaneers' 20-7 preseason loss to the Jaguars on Saturday night.

Trask led the Buccaneers' only scoring drive of the night, a nine-play, 68-yard march he capped off with a six-yard touchdown pass to Cody Thompson. With his first-half performance, the third-year quarterback appears to have gotten a leg up on fellow signal-caller John Wolford (ribs) in the battle for the No. 2 job, and the latter's injury, which forced a fourth-quarter exit Saturday, arguably tips the job battle in Trask's favor all the more.
