Barkley isn't in uniform for Saturday's preseason game at Baltimore, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports. WRs DeVonta Smith (hamstring), Makai Lemon (hamstring) and Johnny Wilson also aren't dressed for the preseason opener, but it appears that most of the rest of the Eagles' skill-position talents may be available Saturday. When it comes to the backfield, Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, Carson Steele and Ja'Quinden Jackson currently are the healthy options. Barkley is coming off a subpar (for him) 2025 campaign in which he churned out 1,413 yards from scrimmage and nine total touchdowns on 317 touches in 16 regular-season games.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports that Barkley has been advocating for more plays to be run under center. Barkley's most productive campaign on the ground came in 2024, his first year with the Eagles, when he turned 345 carries into 2,005 yards (5.8 YPC) and 13 touchdowns across 16 regular-season games. However, he saw his output dip significantly last year, averaging 4.1 yards per carry for 1,140 yards and seven scores in 16 regular-season contests. Hvaing the offense run from under center more often rather than out of a shotgun formation would allow the veteran running back to survey the defense more clearly and set up big gains. He logged only seven runs of 20-plus yards and three runs of 40-plus yards last year, compared to 17 runs of 20-plus yards and seven runs of 40-plus yards in 2024.

Barkley spoke this offseason with retired running back Todd Gurley, who played for the Rams at the same time as new Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, NFL.com's Bobby Kownack reports. Mannion is overhauling the Philadelphia offense, including new terminology, while head coach Nick Sirianni shifts to a more hands-off, executive role. That could always change if things don't go well early in the season, but it nonetheless sounds promising for Barkley in light of his disappointing 2025 campaign in a stagnant offense. Of course, he's not the only one who will need to adjust to a new scheme, with fantasy results partially depending on how QB Jalen Hurts and the offensive line respond to Mannion's changes.

Barkley rushed 26 times for 106 yards and caught three of six targets for 25 yards in Sunday's 23-19 wild-card game loss to the 49ers. Barkley ripped off a 29-yard run on Philadelphia's second offensive play to help set up a one-yard Dallas Goedert rushing touchdown on the team's first drive, and the star running back topped 100 yards on the ground after doing so in only three of 16 regular-season games. Despite Barkley's best efforts, he suffered his first playoff loss in an Eagles uniform after winning Super Bowl LIX in his first season with the team. Barkley remains one of the league's best running backs and should maintain a workhorse role for the Eagles in his age-29 season.

Barkley was active but did not play in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Commanders. Barkley was given a breather in Week 18 as Philadelphia gets set to begin its postseason run. The running back has now officially finished his second campaign with the Eagles having turned 280 carries into 1,140 yards and seven scores while also reeling in 37 of 50 targets for 273 yards and two touchdowns over 16 regular-season contests. Barkley compiled 499 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 91 carries over four contests during the postseason last year, and he'll look to pick up where he left off when the team hosts the 49ers in the wild-card round next weekend.
