Murray isn't expected to suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports. Head coach Kevin O'Connell relayed Thursday that Murray and many other starters are unlikely to play, adding that J.J. McCarthy is expected to get the starting nod under center. Murray has been named the team's Week 1 starting QB over McCarthy and Carson Wentz.

The Vikings have named Murray their starting quarterback, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The former Cardinal had been competing with J.J. McCarthy for the assignment, but Murray will become the team's fourth Week 1 starter in the last four years. McCarthy is slated to serve as the top backup, while Murray will helm an offense that includes the talented pass-catching nucleus of wideouts Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, as well as tight end T.J. Hockenson.

Murray impressed at Wednesday's practice, connecting on multiple deep passes and showing off his speed on scrambles, according to SI.com's Jason Harmon. The report suggests Murray may be putting some distance between himself and J.J. McCarthy, who reportedly has struggled at training camp while sharing the first-team reps. Reports on Murray also hadn't been great, at least until Wednesday, but he seems to be trending in the right direction, taking the lion's share of the snaps with the starters during Wednesday's practice, per The Minneapolis Star Tribune. Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said in July that he has a timeline in place to name his Week 1 starting QB, but he didn't share that timeline with the media.
-
Coach Kevin O'Connell noted Tuesday that Murray and J.J. McCarthy are slated to split reps with the first-team offense during training camp, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. O'Connell has a timeline in place to announce the Vikings' starter at QB, but at this stage it's unclear how long he'll wait to make that call. For now, Murray profiles as the favorite to land the Week 1 start, but that's a narrative that could change if McCarthy looks sharp as training camp progresses.
-
Murray was on the field for the first snaps of team drills during Tuesday's mandatory minicamp session, Kevin Seifert of ESPN reports. Though Murray was out there first Tuesday, J.J. McCarthy took about an equal number of snaps with the starters, which was also the case during the media-access portions of the Vikings' OTAs. At this stage, a decision on the team's starting quarterback doesn't appear imminent, with Murray acknowledging that sharing reps with McCarthy has been challenging as he adjusts to a new offensive system. Murray remains the favorite to win the top job, but McCarthy -- who Minnesota took 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft -- still has time to change that narrative ahead of Week 1.
