  • Padres' German Marquez: Hits five innings in rehab start

Marquez (forearm) struck out three and allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks across five innings in a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A El Paso.

Making what was his fourth rehab start with El Paso, Marquez built up to 73 pitches (43 strikes) and induced seven swings and misses. The right-hander has looked sharp throughout his assignment, compiling a 1.76 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB in 15.1 innings. Marquez looks ready to return from the 15-day injured list during the upcoming week, and while the Padres haven't revealed their plans for the 31-year-old, he would be a logical choice to replace the struggling Griffin Canning (6.64 ERA, 1.57 WHIP over 42 innings) when his next turn in the rotation comes up Tuesday versus Atlanta at Petco Park.

  • Kodai Senga SP | NYM

Mets' Kodai Senga: Staying in rotation

Senga is slated to start Monday's game against the Cubs at Citi Field.

Senga returned from the injured list last week and had a rocky performance in a 5-3 loss to the Reds, covering four innings and striking out five batters while yielding four earned runs on two hits and four walks. The right-hander now holds a 9.00 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over six starts with the big club, but the Mets seemingly came away from the rough outing encouraged by the fact that Senga's velocity was up. After his fastball routinely sat around the low-to-mid-90s during his rehab assignment, Senga maxed out at 97.9 mph during his start against Cincinnati, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Senga will likely need to show better command to stick in the rotation for the long haul, he should have a decent amount of leash in the short term while the Mets are without Christian Scott (hip) and Clay Holmes (fibula).

  • Kendall George OF | LAD

Dodgers' Kendall George: On track for post-break return

George (knee) has been rehabbing at the Dodgers' spring training facility in Arizona and is on track to return after the All-Star break, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

George suffered an injury to his left patellar tendon in late May when he jumped out of the way to avoid Double-A Tulsa's bat-retrieving dog. He did not require surgery but is still about a month away from returning to Tulsa's lineup. George is hitting .333/.417/.397 with 26 stolen bases on the season.

  • Matt Wallner RF | MIN

Twins' Matt Wallner: Catching fire at Triple-A

Wallner is slashing .288/.358/.598 with 11 home runs and two stolen bases over 148 plate appearances at Triple-A St. Paul since the Twins demoted him to the minors May 14.

Like Royce Lewis before him, Wallner could be the next member of the Twins' Opening Day lineup to overcome a disappointing start to the season and earn his way back to the big leagues by raking at Triple-A. The Twins sent Wallner to the minors after he produced a weak .551 OPS with a 39.3 percent strikeout rate over 34 games with the big club, and though he initially struggled to get going at the plate during his first two weeks at Triple-A, he's caught fire since the calendar flipped to June. While he's still struck out at a 27.8 percent clip through 17 games this month, Wallner has rediscovered his power stroke, slugging 10 home runs en route to producing a .342/.392/.808 slash line. The Twins don't have an obvious opening for Wallner in their everyday lineup at the moment, but he could be the next player in line for a call-up if the big club loses a player to the injured list.

  • Nick Mears RP | KC

Royals' Nick Mears: Dealing with setback

Mears (shoulder) was tracking toward a rehab assignment but experienced soreness after his bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Mears appeared to be progressing well in rehab from a right shoulder impingement, but he came out of Tuesday's bullpen session with the same soreness and pinching feeling that landed him on the injured list. The right-hander underwent further evaluation Thursday, and while an updated outlook remains undisclosed, the setback has almost certainly pushed back his timeline for both a rehab assignment and return to the big leagues. Before hitting the shelf May 29, Mears posted a 5.12 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB across 19.1 innings.

  • Kris Bubic SP | KC

Royals' Kris Bubic: Logs bullpen session Sunday

    Bubic (elbow/shoulder) threw a two-up bullpen Sunday, per MLB.com.

Working back from left elbow soreness, Bubic suffered a setback after experiencing shoulder discomfort following a rehab start with Triple-A Omaha on June 9. The southpaw underwent an MRI that revealed no structural damage to either his elbow or shoulder, an encouraging development that has allowed him to resume building back up. Having now completed a bullpen session, the 28-year-old could restart his rehab assignment soon, provided he doesn't experience any renewed discomfort. Before being shelved, Bubic posted a 3-2 record with a 4.11 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 51:26 K:BB across 50.1 innings (nine starts).

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Logs three hits Sunday

Massey went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 12-10 loss to the Cardinals.

Massey contributed offensively, opening the scoring with a two-run single in the first inning as part of a three-hit performance. The 28-year-old's steal of second base in the third frame marked his second swipe of the season and first since May 2. It has been a standout June for the second baseman, as he's hitting .323/.333/.516 with three homers, three doubles, 12 RBI and nine runs scored across 17 appearances this month.

  • Sandy Leon C | ATL

    Sandy Leon: Reaches free agency

Leon elected to become a free agent Monday, Lindsay Crosby of BravesToday.com reports.

Leon has decided to test out free agency rather than accept Atlanta's outright assignment. The veteran catcher could wind up back in the organization on a minor-league contract, though he now has the ability to negotiate with all clubs.

  • Reds' Brandon Williamson: Steps back on mound

Williamson (shoulder) tossed a bullpen session Saturday, his first since landing on the injured list April 30, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Though Williamson is expected to remain out through the All-Star break, he's making progress with his throwing program at the Reds' facility in Arizona and could be ready to start facing hitters within the next two or three weeks. Williamson posted a 6.11 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 28 innings over six starts with Cincinnati before being deactivated due to left shoulder fatigue.

  • Royals' Carter Jensen: Stays hot in Sunday's loss

Jensen went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two additional runs scored and two walks in Sunday's 12-10 loss to the Cardinals.

Jensen's hot stretch continued Sunday, as he came around to score a season-high three times and went the opposite way for his 10th homer of the campaign in the sixth inning. The 22-year-old is in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak, during which he's slashing .375/.407/.708 with three homers, seven doubles, 11 RBI, 12 runs and a stolen base. His recent production has helped him settle into the leadoff spot against right-handed pitching.
