  • Ken Waldichuk SP | WAS

Athletics' Ken Waldichuk: Unremarkable outing against Texas

Waldichuk did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and five walks over five innings against the Rangers. He struck out five.

Waldichuk registered a 1:1 K:BB for the second straight start, and he's pitched six innings just once this year. The southpaw also sports a sky-high 7.02 ERA, which is not up to par for fantasy. The 25-year-old is still getting his feet wet in the majors, but managers are going to have to wait for him to develop before he can be trusted as a reliable option.

  • Martin Perez SP | ATL

Rangers' Martin Perez: Turns in shaky outing

Perez did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the Athletics. He struck out three.

Perez certainly improved on his last appearance, when he coughed up seven runs in 3.2 innings against the Angels. However, this still wasn't a great showing, and it was against a historically bad Athletics team (9-31). The southpaw has a generous 1.61 WHIP so far this year, but there is good reason to believe that he can turn it around. The 32-year-old veteran posted a 2.41 ERA across six starts in the month of April, so this could possibly be just a rough patch.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Giants' Alex Wood: Set to start Monday

Wood will start Monday's game versus the Phillies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Wood returned from a hamstring injury Friday and allowed a run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in one inning. Manager Gabe Kapler revealed Wood was only available for one inning due to an adjustment in the Giants' pitching plans for next week. With Friday's 31-pitch outing serving essentially as an in-game bullpen session between starts, the southpaw may remain on a pitch count for Monday's game. He threw just 46 pitches over 3.2 innings in his lone rehab appearance last Sunday with Triple-A Sacramento.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Rockies' Austin Gomber: Strong showing versus Phillies

Gomber allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six over 6.2 innings without walking a batter in a no-decision versus the Phillies on Friday.

Four of the five hits Gomber allowed came in the seventh inning, and they led to all three runs thanks to home runs by Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber. Even with the late fade, this was Gomber's third straight quality start, though it's also the second time in eight outings he's allowed multiple homers. The 29-year-old southpaw has a 6.30 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB across 40 innings this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Reds next week.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Phillies' Taijuan Walker: Quality start in Colorado

Walker allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three without walking a batter over six-plus innings, taking a no-decision Friday versus the Rockies.

Walker was sharp early, then faded by allowing three runs over the sixth and seventh innings before he was relieved by Matt Strahm. This was Walker's fourth quality start in eight outings this season. The right-hander has had some uneven results with a 5.75 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB through 40.2 innings, and he takes a 3-2 record into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to be at San Francisco next week.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Twins' Sonny Gray: Strikes out nine in no-decision

Gray allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Friday.

Gray wasn't able to pitch very deep into the game, throwing 57 of 94 pitches for strikes. It was still a solid bounce-back effort after he allowed multiple runs for the first time all season in his start versus Cleveland last Saturday. The right-hander now has a 1.39 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 56:16 K:BB through 45.1 innings over eight starts this season. He's projected for a tough road start versus the Dodgers next week.

  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Cubs' Drew Smyly: Earns fourth win

Smyly (4-1) allowed two runs on four hits across six innings to earn the win Friday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out four.

Smyly allowed two runs in the second inning before settling in to toss four straight scoreless frames and earn the victory. The lefty has looked good this year, as he now has a 3.05 ERA to go with a sparkling 0.97 WHIP. Smyly doesn't always go that deep into games, as this was only his third time tossing six innings or more across eight starts, but he's otherwise been effective. The veteran is tentatively set to take the mound again Wednesday against the Astros.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Coughs up four runs

Wainwright allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings during Friday's victory against the Red Sox. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.

Wainwright got through three scoreless frames before Boston broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth. He then served up back-to-back homers to Connor Wong and Enmanuel Valdez in the fifth. The veteran righty has been tagged with eight runs through 10 innings in his first two appearances of 2023. Wainwright will look for better results in his next start, which is projected to be at home against the Brewers next week.

  • Corbin Burnes SP | ARI

Brewers' Corbin Burnes: Pitches six scoreless innings

Burnes (4-2) earned the win Friday over the Royals, giving up two hits and four walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings.

The four walks were a season worst for Burnes, but the rest of his line was excellent. This was his second scoreless outing in eight starts this season. The right-hander has a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 39:18 K:BB through 45.2 innings in 2023. He's lined up for a road start in St. Louis next week.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Red Sox's James Paxton: Fans nine in return

Paxton allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings during Friday's loss to the Cardinals. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision.

Making his first MLB appearance in over two years, Paxton was greeted with a two-run shot from Nolan Arenado in the first inning. After that, the southpaw shook off the rust and turned in a solid outing. His fastball touched 97.8 mph and he displayed the same strikeout stuff that he had prior to a series of big injuries. The 34-year-old will look to build off this performance in his next start, which is currently scheduled to come in San Diego next week.
