  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Yankees' Nathan Eovaldi: Undergoes MRI, awaiting further consultation

Eovaldi (elbow) underwent a dye contrast MRI on Thursday.

The Yankees will await the results of the MRI and have Eovaldi undergo further evaluation and consultation in the coming days before updating his status any further. At this point, it seems safe to assume Eovaldi will miss at least one start after making it just 12 pitches into Wednesday's outing. The team may not have much of a choice but to bring Luis Severino back from Triple-A for a start early next week.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Mariners' James Paxton: Elbow improving, but won't return this week

Paxton said the "swelling is just about gone" from his elbow after being hit by a line drive, but he won't return until next week, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Paxton is expected to play catch Thursday and throw a bullpen session this weekend. If all goes well, he could be ready to return early next week to the rotation.

  • Jarrett Grube SP | CLE

Mariners' Jarrett Grube: Likely headed back to Triple-A soon

Grube, who was called up Wednesday, could be sent back to Triple-A Tacoma this weekend, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

The Mariners needed a fresh arm, and Grube was it. He was scheduled to start Wednesday at Tacoma. Grube, though, is not considered a candidate for the Seattle rotation, so the team likely will add a starting pitcher Friday, which will cost Grube his spot.

  • Red Sox's Sean O'Sullivan: Activated from disabled list, sent to Triple-A

O'Sullivan (knee) was activated off the disabled list Thursday, and outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket, Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports.

O'Sullivan had been on the DL for just over a month after dealing with left knee tendinitis. He recently completed a rehab assignment with Pawtucket, but was roughed up pretty good, allowing six runs on six hits in three innings. The team decided to keep him with the Triple-A team, but O'Sullivan will likely come back to the majors before the end of the month.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Mariners' James Paxton: Not scheduled to start this weekend

Paxton (elbow) is not scheduled to start for the Mariners this weekend.

It was thought that Paxton could start this weekend against the A's, perhaps on Saturday, but Hisashi Iwakuma is listed as the probable starter Saturday and Wade LeBlanc is the probable starter Sunday. X-rays were negative on his elbow after he was hit by a comebacker in his last start and he played catch Wednesday, but it remains to be seen when he will make his next start. Monday's starter is listed as TBD, so Paxton could take the ball in that game against the Angels if his elbow is feeling better, but at this point it would be risky to assume Paxton will pitch for the big league club in the near future.

  • Tigers' Justin Verlander: Denied win despite another sharp outing

Verlander was left with a no-decision Wednesday despite allowing the Mariners to score just once -- a solo homer -- in seven innings. He struck out six while giving up seven hits and two walks.

In fact, the Tigers ended up in the loss column despite the flamethrower's eighth consecutive start of two or fewer runs. This run has turned the storyline of his season -- Verlander never had an ERA under 4.00 through the end of May, and as recently as June 26 was at 4.30. But now he's worn his mark down to 3.42, a number well in line with this season's peripherals, thanks in no small part to a blast-from-the-past 9.54 K/9.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

White Sox's Jose Quintana: Let down by bullpen in no-decision

Quintana allowed a single run on four hits over 7.1 innings Wednesday against Kansas City, striking out five and walking one in a no-decision.

He left the game with a 1-0 lead and a man on second, but reliever Nate Jones promptly gave up a game-tying double and the White Sox went on to lose in 14 innings. Despite the unsatisfactory conclusion to this one, it has to be chalked up as yet another excellent outing from Quintana, who's in the midst of his finest MLB season. However, there are warning signs underlying his 2.85 ERA, as he's benefited from strong luck on balls in play and a high strand rate despite allowing more hard contact than ever before. Look for some second-half regression, but Quintana's still a good fantasy starter -- just not quite this good.

  • Martin Perez SP | ATL

Rangers' Martin Perez: Allows only one run in no-decision

Perez held the Rockies to a single run on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Wednesday. He struck out three and didn't factor into the decision.

Perez has been putting on a Jekyll-and-Hyde act lately; over his last seven outings, he's allowed five or more runs five times, but has limited the opposition to a single run in the other two. His K:BB is still awful at 70:60 over 145 innings, and although his groundballing ways allow Perez to have a modicum of success here and there, that plentiful contact he surrenders always catches up to him in the end.

  • Tommy Milone SP | SEA

Twins' Tommy Milone: Starting second game of doubleheader Thursday

Milone will receive the start in Game 2 of the team's doubleheader against the Astros on Thursday, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Milone has pitched a couple of time out of the bullpen since being moved there Aug. 1, potentially limiting his innings Thursday. The Twins will recall Andrew Albers to provide some added depth in a bullpen that could be taxed as part of the doubleheader.

  • Blake Snell SP | LAD

Rays' Blake Snell: Fails to pitch two innings against the Blue Jays on Wednesday

Snell (3-5) allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits, struck out two and walked four over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

The lefty should have been out of the first, but instead right fielder Steven Souza Jr. dropped a foul ball while Josh Donaldson was batting. Donaldson took advantage, recording a single. Snell retired the next two batters, but Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run homer in the next at-bat. Snell allowed two more runs to score in the second, and at one point, walked three straight hitters before manager Kevin Cash finally took him out. Snell is now 3-5 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 56.2 innings this season. He'll try to get back on track in his next start Tuesday against the Padres.
