Lyles (8-11) earned the win Tuesday against Arizona after tossing seven innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and two walks while fanning three.

Lyles piggybacked Spencer Howard's two-inning outing by pitching the rest of the game en route to his eighth win of the campaign. This was his second straight quality start and third in his last four trips to the mound overall. His season ERA stands at 5.43, and while he's been pitching well of late, he has lacked consistency all year long. Nevertheless, it's worth noting he has given up three or fewer runs in three of his last four appearances.

Matz (11-7) picked up the win in Tuesday's 5-1 victory over the Yankees, allowing one run on seven hits over six innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.

The southpaw fired 65 of 93 pitches for strikes en route to his third quality start in his last four outings and his eighth of the season. Matz has been stingy since the All-Star break, posting a 2.22 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB through 52.2 innings over his last 10 starts.

Whitley (elbow) reported to the Astros' spring training facility this week to begin a throwing program, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Whitley underwent Tommy John surgery in March and still has another 6-to-8 months before getting into game action. That will unfold in the minors, as the right-hander has thrown just 86 innings of affiliated ball since 2017. The one-time elite pitching prospect has tumbled down the rankings since the beginning of 2018, when he was suspended 50 games for violating MLB drug policy. An oblique injury, a mechanical adjustment that led to a 12.21 ERA in 2019 and an arm injury that prevented him from participating in the abbreviated 2020 season then served to further derail him.

Odorizzi allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five in five innings against the Mariners on Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision.

The right-hander gave up a two-run double to J.P. Crawford in the fifth inning, scoring Luis Torrens and Jarred Kelenic. It was the sixth consecutive start in which he lasted at least five innings -- he's compiled a 2.90 ERA and 2-1 record over that stretch. Odorizzi is expected to start next against the Rangers on Monday.

Gilbert pitched 4.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five in Tuesday's loss to the Astros. He did not factor into the game's decision.

The rookie was shaky in this start. In the third inning he surrendered a solo home run to Jose Altuve and an RBI double to Alex Bregman. He left the game in the fifth inning after recording just one out and allowing two baserunners. It was the fourth time in his last five starts that he has failed to reach five innings, compiling a dreadful 8.59 ERA over that stretch. He projects to start next on Monday against the Red Sox.

Rodriguez (11-8) surrendered six runs on eight hits and struck out three in 3.2 innings, taking the loss versus Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

The southpaw was effective against the Rays last Thursday with six shutout innings, but he did not enjoy the same success at home. Six of the eight hits Rodriguez allowed went for extra bases, including two home runs and a triple. The 28-year-old's ERA rose to 5.15 with a 1.39 WHIP and 159:39 K:BB through 136.1 innings this year. He's been maddeningly inconsistent with three quality starts and three outings with five-plus runs allowed in 10 starts since the All-Star break. Rodriguez lines up for a challenging road start versus the White Sox this weekend.

Civale (10-3) was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Twins after allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over 4.2 innings.

Civale was making his first major-league start since June 21 after a two-and-a-half month absence due to a sprained finger. The right-hander tossed 78 pitches, including 52 for strikes. His only blemish on the night came from an RBI single by Andrelton Simmons in the fifth inning. During his three rehab starts, the 26-year-old compiled a solid 0.79 ERA and 0.71 WHIP over 11.1 innings. He'll look to get stretched out further during his next projected start Sunday against Milwaukee.

Rasmussen (2-1) allowed a run on six hits and struck out two in five innings, earning the win Tuesday over Boston.

The only run the right-hander gave up came on a second-inning groundout. Rasmussen still isn't pitching very deep into games, but he hasn't allowed more than one run in any appearance since July 5. He owns a 3.25 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 65:23 K:BB across 61 innings between Tampa Bay and Milwaukee this year. The 26-year-old will look to keep up the strong pitching next week in Toronto.

Manager Aaron Boone said Cole (hamstring) isn't scheduled to undergo an MRI and is "optimistic" the injury was caught early enough to avoid any real problems after leaving Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. Cole (14-7) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks over 3.2 innings.

Cole's removal from Tuesday's contest appears to have been a precautionary move, though that doesn't automatically mean he'll be able to make his next turn through the rotation. The Yankees have lost eight of their past 10 games and can ill afford to be without their ace for any significant period down the stretch while attempting to secure a playoff spot.

Giolito (hamstring) threw at max effort Tuesday and is expected to throw a bullpen session in the next couple days, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

The right-hander landed on the injured list Friday with a strained left hamstring, and his quick return to throwing with no limitations confirms the injury as a minor concern. Giolito is expected to require two bullpen sessions before being activated, and he could be in the mix to rejoin the starting rotation next week.
