Ryan (10-8) took the loss in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up four runs on three hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out three.

The right-hander continues to battle his control; Ryan has issued at least three free passes in three of his last four starts, posting a 4.64 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB through 21.1 innings over that stretch. While he's been able to limit the damage somewhat, 26-year-old is likely running out of gas at the end of his first full season in the majors -- he tossed 92.2 innings across all levels in 2021, but is already up to 125.1 frames this year.

Varland didn't factor into the decision in a 5-4 extra-innings loss during the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven.

Making his major-league debut, Varland got taken deep by Aaron Judge in the fourth inning, but he's far from alone in that this season. Otherwise, the 24-year-old looked sharp and fired 55 of 80 pitches for strikes before exiting with a 3-1 lead during the sixth inning, only for Griffin Jax to serve up a game-tying homer before the frame was over. Varland was up as the 29th man for the twin bill but may have earned another turn in the rotation with this performance, especially since Tyler Mahle (shoulder) is back on the injured list. Through 126.1 innings in the high minors this year, Varland produced a 3.06 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 146:42 K:BB.

Springs did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one hit and one walk over three innings against the Red Sox. He struck out two.

Springs surrendered his lone hit in the form of a double from Enrique Hernandez to lead off the game. The 29-year-old has allowed one run or fewer in five of his last seven starts. The lefty has started 19 games in 2022 after starting two games combined in his previous four seasons; his 2.62 ERA this season is a career best.

Arihara is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays at Globe Life Field.

After a three-start run following his Aug. 16 call-up from Triple-A Round Rock, Arihara shifted to the bullpen last week. He made one two-inning appearance in relief Sept. 3 but will now step back into the rotation after fifth starter Dallas Keuchel was recently released. Arihara owns a 5.29 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 17 innings with Texas this season and doesn't profile as an inspiring fantasy option.

The Yankees plan to activate Cortes (groin) from the 15-day injured list to start Thursday's game against the Twins.

Cortes will be ready to rejoin the rotation after a near-minimum-length stay on the shelf following his placement on the IL on Aug. 25. Though he didn't make a rehab start while he was on the mend from the left groin strain, Cortes was able to complete a 45-pitch live batting practice session last weekend. Cortes could have some light workload restrictions Thursday as a result, so the Yankees may need Clarke Schmidt to piggyback him to some extent.

Kopech did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Mariners. He struck out four.

Kopech allowed a two-run homer off the bat of Eugenio Suarez. It was the righty's first start after spending just over two weeks on the injured list with a knee strain. Kopech struggled in the five starts prior to his injury, recording a 5.24 ERA with an 0-3 record during that span. In addition, the 26-year-old has had more difficulty in 11 road starts with a 4.80 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 50.2 innings compared to a 2.97 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 63.2 innings across 12 starts in Chicago

Castillo did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out eight.

Castillo allowed two doubles in addition to a two-run homer from Eloy Jimenez with two outs in the fourth inning. This marks the seventh time the righty has recorded at least eight strikeouts in his last 10 starts. In addition, the 29-year-old has given up three earned runs or fewer in 19 of 21 outings this year.

Kremer (6-5) was tagged with the loss against Toronto on Wednesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings.

Tyler Wells (oblique) was activated from the injured list to start the contest, but he went only two frames. Kremer took over in the third inning and pitched relatively well outside of the fifth, when he allowed the three runs that ended up being the margin of defeat. Kremer didn't allow any extra-base hits, however, and he threw an efficient 70 of 92 pitches for strikes. It's unclear how he and Wells will be used moving forward, though Kremer's recent run of strong appearances -- he has a 2.30 ERA over his past five outings -- suggests that he'll continue to play a prominent role in Baltimore's pitching plans.

Manoah (14-7) earned the win over Baltimore on Wednesday, tossing eight innings and allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five batters.

Manoah gave up a run in the first inning but allowed just one baserunner over seven scoreless innings thereafter. The right-hander completed eight frames on an efficient 95 pitches to register his fourth straight quality start. Manoah has built upon a strong rookie season with an even better sophomore campaign, as he ranks seventh among qualified MLB starters with a 2.42 ERA while tying for fifth with 14 wins.

Ragans (calf) issued three walks and struck out three over three scoreless and hitless innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Wednesday.

Ragans missed a couple of weeks with a minor left calf strain. The southpaw was solid, though a little wild, in his return. He threw 49 pitches (26 strikes) in this outing, and he's yet to complete more than five innings in any of his five major-league appearances. He has a 3.80 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 12:13 K:BB through 21.1 innings for the Rangers. Ragans should continue to get an extended look in the rotation, and he's projected for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.
