The Red Sox recalled Seabold from Triple-A Worcester ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Cincinnati.

Boston moved reliever Garrett Whitlock (hip) to the 15-day injured list to open up a spot on the 28-man active roster for Seabold, who is rejoining the big club for the first time in the second half. While making three starts for the Red Sox prior to the All-Star break, Seabold delivered an 11.91 ERA and 2.56 WHIP in 11.1 innings.

Whitlock (hip) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Whitlock's placement on the injured list was expected since he's been shut down from throwing and will undergo surgery next week to address his right hip impingement. The right-hander is expected to be ready for spring training in 2023, while Connor Seabold was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Wednesday against the Reds.

Cease allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Tuesday.

Cease limited the damage to an Austin Hedges sacrifice fly in the second inning despite allowing more than five or more baserunners for a third straight start. Cease has logged quality starts in four of his last five outings and still appears to be one of the best pitchers in the American League, though he's faded a bit from his midseason peak. The right-hander owns a 2.13 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 217:71 K:BB through 173 innings across 30 starts. He's tentatively set for a favorable home start versus the Tigers in his next outing.

Castillo (7-6) took the loss during Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Athletics, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Castillo cruised through the first four frames before surrendering five consecutive two-out baserunners and all four runs in the fifth, prompting his removal. The 29-year-old fired 54 of 85 pitches for strikes with 13 of the swinging variety, though the four strikeouts match his lowest total in a start since June 15. Castillo has alternated stellar and subpar performances through four September turns, with the result being a 2.82 ERA across 22.1 innings. He's tentatively slated to pitch again Sunday in Kansas City.

Civale (forearm) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Tuesday.

Civale missed over three weeks with forearm inflammation, but he was able to throw 69 pitches (40 strikes) in his return. He faltered in the sixth inning, when he was charged with both of the runs on his line, though it was an otherwise solid start for the right-hander He's had few of those in 2022 with a 5.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 77:21 K:BB through 80 innings across 17 starts. Civale is projected for a road start in Texas this weekend if he checks out fine after Tuesday's outing.

Sears (6-2) earned the win during Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Seattle, allowing an unearned run on one hit and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Sears was lights-out aside from a 37-pitch second inning, when a pair of two-out walks forced in the lone run. The 26-year-old fired 53 of 86 pitches for strikes with nine of the swinging variety en route to a career-high seven strikeouts. The impressive start snaps a two-turn rough patch, during which Sears permitted 11 runs across six innings. He carries a 3.58 ERA into his next start, scheduled for Sunday against the Mets.

Cortes did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over five innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out four.

For the second start in a row, Cortes allowed one run over five innings, but he got his pitch count up to 87 after throwing just 65 pitches in his last start. The 27-year-old has failed to record a scoreless outing in eight starts since July 24, but he still owns a healthy 2.67 ERA and 0.97 WHIP through 145 innings this season. He tentatively lines up to face Boston this weekend.

Bundy allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Royals on Tuesday.

Bundy gave up a two-run home run to MJ Melendez in the third inning and a solo shot to Hunter Dozier in the fifth. After continued trouble in the fifth, Bundy exited with two outs and Griffin Jax allowed an inherited runner to score, tacking a fourth run onto the starter's line. Bundy has completed five innings only once in his last five starts, though he's gone 1-1 with three no-decisions in that span. The veteran right-hander has a 4.78 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 89:26 K:BB through 131.2 innings across 27 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Angels this weekend.

Greinke gave up four runs on 10 hits and struck out three in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Tuesday.

The 10 hits allowed matched a season high for Greinke, though he managed to avoid issuing a walk for the first time in four starts. The veteran right-hander continues to struggle with pitching deep into games, as he's failed to complete six frames in three of his last four outings. For the season, he has a 4.21 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 70:25 K:BB through 124 innings across 24 starts. Greinke is projected for a home start versus the Mariners in his next outing.

Sandoval (6-9) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven over five innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Rangers.

Sandoval has been effective lately, as this was his ninth straight start of two or fewer earned runs. The four walks matched his season high, a mark he's reached five times in 25 starts this year. The southpaw is now at a 3.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 141:57 K:BB through 137.1 innings. Sandoval is tentatively projected for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.
