  • Guardians' Parker Messick: Logs quality start vs. South Siders

Messick (3-0) earned the win against the White Sox on Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out four across six innings.

Messick got off to a slow start by allowing three hits and a run in the first inning, but the 24-year-old southpaw kept the White Sox off the board over the next five frames. He has logged four quality starts in five outings since making his major-league debut Aug. 20 and sports a 1.84 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 29.1 innings this season. Messick is in line to make his next start against the Twins on the road next weekend.

  • Trey Yesavage SP | TOR

Blue Jays' Trey Yesavage: Headed to majors

The Blue Jays plan to call up Yesavage from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Sunday's game against the Orioles or Monday's game in Tampa Bay, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Yesavage has been on schedule to pitch for Buffalo on Sunday, but he'll instead meet up with the big club in Toronto for its series finale with Baltimore, though it's not clear if he'll be activated ahead of that contest. The right-hander has climbed through four levels in the minors this season, beginning the campaign in Single-A ball and reaching the Triple-A level on Aug. 12. Though the 2024 first-round draft pick is considered one of the Blue Jays' top prospects and is viewed as a starter over the long haul, he'll be making his big-league debut out of the bullpen. After accruing a 3.24 ERA and 150:38 K:BB in 91.2 innings while starting in 21 of his first 22 appearances of the season, Yesavage has worked in relief in two of his last three outings for Buffalo and has struck out 10 while allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. The right-hander could be broken in as a low-leverage, multi-inning reliever for Toronto initially, but if he excels over the final two weeks of the regular season, he could emerge as a key piece in the Blue Jays bullpen during the playoffs.

  • Rays' Drew Rasmussen: Pulled after five frames again

Rasmussen allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Saturday.

Rasmussen tossed just 80 pitches in the outing, and he's now been pulled after five frames (despite not throwing more than 82 pitches) in each of his past three starts. While he hasn't taken a loss since June 19, the right-hander also has recorded five consecutive no-decisions despite not allowing more than three runs in any outing during that stretch. Rasmussen's overall numbers this season remain strong, as he's posted a 2.74 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 122:34 K:BB over 144.2 innings spanning 29 starts. He's in line to make his next start at home against Toronto.

  • Patrick Corbin SP | TOR

Rangers' Patrick Corbin: Inefficient in no-decision

Corbin came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Mets, allowing one unearned run on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.

The veteran lefty did generate 16 swinging strikes among his 85 pitches (52 total strikes), but Corbin got the hook in the fifth inning after a Cody Freeman throwing error helped bring home the game's first run. Corbin's failed to last five innings in five of eight starts since the beginning of August, laboring to a 5.59 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 31:15 K:BB over 37 innings during that stretch. With Tyler Mahle (shoulder) closing in on his return from the IL and Jacob Latz pitching well of late, the Rangers' rotation plans are a little murky, but if Corbin remains on schedule he'll take the mound at home next weekend against the Marlins.

  • Brayan Bello SP | BOS

Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Stumbles against Yanks

Bello (11-7) took the loss Saturday as the Red Sox were downed 5-3 by the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander was tagged for more than three runs for the first time since Aug. 10, which was also the last time he got handed a losing decision. Bello has given Boston at least five innings in every start since the beginning of June, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 89:32 K:BB over 117.2 innings during that time. He'll try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the A's.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Yankees' Max Fried: Collects MLB-leading 17th win

Fried (17-5) picked up the win Saturday, giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out six.

In the process, the southpaw moved ahead of teammate Carlos Rodon, as well as Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta, for the major-league lead in wins. Fried has gotten the win in four straight starts and hasn't lost since Aug. 10, going 5-0 over his last six outings with a 3.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB in 37.1 innings over that stretch. He likely doesn't have enough time left in the schedule to get to 20 wins, but Fried will look to continue his undefeated streak on the road next week in Baltimore.

  • Keider Montero SP | DET

Tigers' Keider Montero: Drawing start Sunday

Montero will start for the Tigers during Sunday's game in Miami, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

For at least one turn, Montero will take the rotation spot of Sawyer Gipson-Long, who landed on the injured list Friday due to neck stiffness. Montero is no stranger to a starting role, as he's made nine starts (out of 17 appearances) this season and has completed as many as eight innings in a contest (May 8 against Colorado). Montero was dispatched to the minors in late July, and since returning to the big-league club Sept. 3, he's made two appearances in relief, allowing two earned runs with a 5:2 K:BB over five innings. Because he'll be pitching on just two days' rest after tossing 1.2 innings in Thursday's loss to the Yankees, Montero will likely be in line for an abbreviated workload during Sunday's start. Stavenhagen suggests that Jose Urquidy could be called upon to work multiple innings in relief behind Montero.

  • Tarik Skubal SP | DET

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Imaging comes back clean

Imaging on Skubal's left side came back negative Saturday after he was removed in the fourth inning of Friday's 8-2 loss to the Marlins, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Manager A.J. Hinch said the team will continue to keep an eye on Skubal's side over the next several days, but the expectation is that he will be able to make his next start, which is expected to fall Thursday versus the Guardians. Before exiting Friday's outing with side tightness, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner endured one of his worst starts of the campaign, giving up four earned runs on four hits -- including two home runs -- while matching a season low with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

  • Astros' Colton Gordon: Collects multi-inning save

Gordon struck out three and gave up three earned runs on three hits and one walk over four relief innings Friday to record his first career save in an 11-3 rout of Atlanta.

The southpaw spoiled a combined shutout bid by four Houston hurlers as the team went with a bullpen game Friday, with Gordon serving up home runs to Ronald Acuna in the sixth inning and Eli White in the eighth to account for all of Atlanta's offensive damage on the night. After tossing 60 pitches Friday, Gordon is one of the more stretched-out options in the Houston bullpen, making him a candidate to fill the vacant fifth spot in the club's rotation. However, with Gordon having submitted a 7.92 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 25 innings with the big club since the All-Star break, the Astros may prefer to go in another direction the next time a fifth starter is needed Wednesday versus the Rangers.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Nabs win in Citi Field return

DeGrom (12-7) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings in an 8-3 victory over the Mets. He struck out two without walking a batter.

The veteran righty didn't display the same kind of dominance he possessed the last time he stepped on the mound at Citi Field at the end of the 2022 season while a member of the Mets -- deGrom managed to generate only five swinging strikes on 88 pitches (59 total strikes) -- but he didn't need to as the Rangers backed his revenge game with six runs in the top of the first inning. DeGrom was still plenty effective, retiring the final 15 batters he faced in his 14th quality start of the year, and he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last six outings, posting a 2.91 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 36:6 K:BB in 34 innings over that stretch. He lines up to make his next start on the road next week in Houston as Texas tries to stay in the AL wild-card picture.
