  • Anthony Bender RP | MIA

Marlins' Anthony Bender: Making limited progress

Bender (back) resumed playing catch from 60 feet Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Bender had been throwing bullpen sessions as recently as mid-June, but he appears to have regressed in his recovery from the back injury at some point over the past three weeks. Though the right-hander is at least throwing again in some capacity, he still has several more hurdles to clear before the Marlins will entertain bringing him back from the 15-day injured list. Bender doesn't look on pace to be activated before the All-Star break.

  • Nick Sandlin RP | DET

Guardians' Nick Sandlin: Called up by Cleveland

Sandlin was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

After spending a couple weeks in the minors, Sandlin will reclaim a spot in Cleveland's bullpen. He posted a 2.89 ERA over his first 18.2 big-league innings of the season, but his 1.61 WHIP suggests he was a bit on the fortunate side.

  • Alex Young RP | CIN

Guardians' Alex Young: Optioned to Triple-A

Young was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Young joined the Guardians on Sunday and made his first big-league appearance of the season Monday. He tossed only six pitches and did not allow a run, but Cleveland still decided to send him down and replace him in the bullpen with Nick Sandlin.

  • Guardians' Konnor Pilkington: Heads back to minors

Pilkington was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Pilkington was called up to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Tigers, and he allowed only one earned run over four innings. However, he will head back to the minors for the time being. Only five Guardians have started more games than Pilkington this season, so he figures to be the top option next time the team needs to bring up a starter from the minors.

  • Tony Santillan RP | CIN

Reds' Tony Santillan: Moves to 60-day IL

The Reds transferred Santillan (back) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

The move guarantees Santillan will return from his back strain no sooner than mid-August, though manager David Bell speculated the reliever might not be activated until September, per Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Prior to landing on the shelf with al lower-back strain, Santillan struggled to the tune of a 5.49 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 19.2 innings, but he could still see high-leverage work once healthy.

  • Ian Gibaut RP | CIN

Reds' Ian Gibaut: Claimed by CIncinnati

The Reds claimed Gibaut off waivers from the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Gibaut finds a new home two days after the Dodgers designated him for assignment. Since he doesn't have any minor-league options remaining, Gibaut will likely fill a low-leverage role out of Cincinnati's bullpen after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings June 27, which was his first and only 2022 big-league appearance to date.

  • Mitch White RP | MIL

Dodgers' Mitch White: Not starting Tuesday

White will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Rockies, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

It's unclear whether the righty is hurt, or if the Dodgers just want to add an arm (Ryan Pepiot) to the rotation to give the rest of the starters an extra day of rest. White has a 3.93 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 34.1 innings this season.

  • Josh Winder RP | ARI

Twins' Josh Winder: In line to start Tuesday

The Twins plan to call Winder up from Triple-A St. Paul to start Tuesday's game against the White Sox in Chicago, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Chris Archer had previously been confirmed as Tuesday's starter, but he's been scratched from the assignment while he tends to an unspecified injury. As a result, Winder, who was scratched from his scheduled Triple-A start Monday in light of Archer's injury, is in line to join the big club for at least one turn through the rotation. However, Miller notes that rain is in the forecast for Chicago ahead of Tuesday's 8:10 p.m. ET start time, so the Twins may not officially activate Winder if the game is at risk of postponement.

  • Sam Howard RP | DET

Tigers' Sam Howard: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Tigers designated Howard for assignment Tuesday.

He'll cede his spot on the 40-man roster to right-hander Drew Hutchison, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Guardians. After being claimed off waivers from the Pirates in mid-May, Howard had pitched exclusively at the Triple-A level with his new organization. In 14 appearances out of the Toledo bullpen, Howard posted a 3.75 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 12 innings.
