  • Nick Burdi RP | NYM

Twins' Nick Burdi: Setback to bone bruise ailment

Burdi had a setback in his recovery from a bone bruise in his right humerus, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The setback was called minor according to the report, but there's no timetable for his return. He won't throw for at least another ten days. He hasn't pitched since April 28 due to the injury.

  • Justin Wilson RP | BOS

Tigers' Justin Wilson: Suffering from sore elbow, but says he's good to go

Wilson is suffering from a sore elbow after pitching one inning of relief against the Yankees, reports MLive.com. He gave up a run on two hits in that outing.

He doesn't think it's of any concern -- team trainers have worked to loosen it up and Wilson is convinced the bit of rest has been good for it. Manager Brad Ausmus also isn't concerned and acknowledged that he was prepared to use Wilson as a closer Wednesday over Francisco Rodriguez. Ausmus didn't need to pull that trigger with his team down heading into the later innings. Still, Wilson could see late-inning work soon enough and that could be good enough for a speculative waiver bid this week.

  • Athletics' Daniel Mengden: Takes tough-luck loss after sharp outing

Mengden (0-2) struck out seven and limited the Rangers to only two runs (one earned) on just four hits and a walk over 6.1 innings Thursday, but was left with a hard-luck loss.

After a mediocre MLB debut, Mengden's got our attention now, and his stats in the minors say he ought to -- he owns a 1.39 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 39:10 K:BB in 45.1 innings at Triple-A this year. With precious few exceptions, the 23-year-old has shown terrific control throughout his career in the minors, and after working out the jitters from his first start, he came out and showed it Thursday. That makes Mengden well worth watching in the near term, particularly with the Brewers and their below-average offense coming to face him in Oakland on Wednesday.

  • Ryan Garton RP | SEA

Rays' Ryan Garton: Optioned to Triple-A Durham

Garton was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Garton was called up in late May and played in five games with the Rays, posting a 5.40 ERA and 2.00 WHIP during five innings of work. He will go back to Durham where he has touted a 2.38 ERA with a 29:6 K:BB in 22.2 innings, while holding opposing batters to a .258 average. The 26-year-old was knocked around during his first stint at the major league level, but he could be back up with the Rays later on this summer. Tampa Bay will add another pitcher to their roster Thursday or Friday.

  • Matt Andriese RP | MIA

Rays' Matt Andriese: Notches victory out of bullpen Wednesday

Andriese (6-0) was successful in his first relief effort during Wednesday's 3-2, extra-inning victory over the Mariners, surrendering only a walk over 2.2 innings while striking out three.

The 26-year-old performed exactly as hoped when he was shifted to the bullpen, providing some valuable long relief in a game that stretched to 13 innings. It was an extension of the success Andriese had largely enjoyed over his seven starts this season, during which he'd generated a 2.82 ERA. If Wednesday's effort is any indication, Andriese's ability to eat up innings will serve to provide Erasmo Ramirez much-needed down time, making the bullpen more effective as a whole.

  • Angels' Hector Santiago: Bounces back with badly-needed strong outing

Santiago (4-4) surrendered two hits, an earned run and two walks over six innings in Wednesday's 10-2 victory over the Twins. He struck out five.

The veteran southpaw rebounded from a string of abbreviated and mostly poor efforts to produce his best start since May 15 versus the Mariners. Santiago had been chased in the second inning by the Indians in his last trip to the mound, giving up six runs (five earned) and seven hits. Two starts prior, he was out after 2.1 innings with six runs (five earned) on his ledger, and he'd yielded four earned runs in just 2.2 innings in the appearance before that. It was a different Santiago Wednesday, as he threw 62 of 99 pitches for strikes, and benefited from some run support as the game went on. Encouragingly, he also stayed away from the long ball for the third straight outing, after giving up 14 round-trippers in his first 11 starts of 2016. He'll look to continue the positive momentum when he faces the Astros next Tuesday.

  • Tyler Duffey RP | KC

Twins' Tyler Duffey: Hit hard again in Wednesday loss

Duffey (2-6) gave up six hits, six runs (four earned) and three walks over 4.1 innings in Wednesday's 10-2 loss to the Angels. He struck out two.

The 25-year-old's offerings found plenty of bats once again, and he's now surrendered at least four earned runs for six straight starts. Duffey actually breezed through the first three frames before giving up two runs in the fourth, and then loading the bases in the fifth before being lifted at the 99-pitch mark. Duffey's ERA is now up to a bloated 5.56, and has risen for five successive starts. He'll try to rebound next Tuesday versus the Phillies.

  • Collin McHugh RP | ATL

Astros' Collin McHugh: Narrowly avoids loss in pitchers' duel

McHugh limited the Cardinals to one run over 6.2 innings Wednesday, but received no decision in an eventual 4-1 win. He struck out six while allowing seven hits and two walks.

He matched zeroes with Adam Wainwright almost all the way through this game, only to give up a run in the seventh, but the Astros rallied to ensure he avoided the loss. After consecutive four-run outings, this is a breath of fresh air for McHugh, but he's got a long way to go yet to correct his ugly season stats. That highly inflated .359 BABIP will come down, bringing his ratios down with it, but it's highly unlikely that we'll ever see him match the sort of elite numbers he put up two seasons ago -- not to mention last year's 19 wins.

  • Daniel Norris RP | CLE

Tigers' Daniel Norris: Getting minor league hitter out with ease

Norris is making progress at Triple-A and may be a "viable option [for the big-league rotation] if the need were there," reports the Detroit Free Press.

The Tigers have already put Michael Fulmer and Matt Boyd into big-league duty this season, long before the team really preferred. So, it might take an injury or continued struggles by the likes of Mike Pelfrey or Matt Boyd to press Norris into duty there, too. The lefty is getting minor league hitters out without much trouble -- in six starts since he was sent down, Norris has a 3.31 ERA and 2.53 FIP.

  • Brian Flynn RP | KC

    Royals' Brian Flynn: Recalled Wednesday

Flynn was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.

Flynn has worked to a 3.04 ERA in the minors as both a starter and a reliever, but he figures to be deployed out of the bullpen with the big league club. The lefty had a brief stint in the majors earlier in the season, allowing four earned runs with a 6:4 K:BB over 7.1 innings. Omar Infante was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot in a corresponding move.
