Twins' Byron Buxton: Goes on paternity leave

Buxton was placed on the paternity leave list Monday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Buxton will likely miss the entirety of the Twins' series against the Mariners but should rejoin the club this weekend in Kansas City. Trevor Larnach has been recalled to take Buxton's spot on the roster and is an option to see starts in Buxton's vacated designated hitter spot.

  • Brandon Belt DH | TOR

Blue Jays' Brandon Belt: Homers for second straight day

Belt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Mariners.

The veteran slugger turned on a Bryan Woo fastball in the sixth inning and got it just over the fence in right field for his eighth homer of the season. Belt had a tough start to his Toronto tenure, but he's now gone yard in back-to-back games and is batting an encouraging .292 (7-for-24) in seven games since the All-Star break.

  • Byron Buxton DH | MIN

Twins' Byron Buxton: Likely headed for paternity leave

The Twins are expected to place Buxton on the paternity list prior to Monday's game against the Mariners, Ted Schwerzler of TwinsDaily.com reports.

The team has yet to confirm any transaction related to Buxton, but outfielder Trevor Larnach was pulled early Sunday in Triple-A St. Paul's 3-1 loss to Omaha for non-injury-related reasons and looks poised to get called up as a replacement for the Twins' top designated hitter. Assuming Buxton spends the maximum three days on the paternity list, he'll miss the entirety of the team's home series versus Seattle before rejoining the big club ahead of its three-game set in Kansas City this weekend.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Giants' Joc Pederson: Sits out against lefty

Pederson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Pederson will take a seat for the second day in a row while the Giants face a left-handed starter (Tarik Skubal) in the makeup game with Detroit. Despite not starting in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Nationals, Pederson accounted for the Giants' only run of the day when he slugged a seventh-inning pinch-hit home run, his 10th of the season.

Giants' Joc Pederson: Smacks pinch-hit homer

Pederson went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Nationals.

Pederson was responsible for the Giants' lone run in Sunday's loss with an opposite-field homer off Amos Willingham in the seventh inning after pinch-hitting for David Villar. It's been a rough July overall for Pederson, who's gone 9-for-47 in 17 games this month, though he now has two homers and four extra-base hits in his last three contests. Overall, the 31-year-old Pederson is slashing .244/.368/.457 with 10 homers, 35 RBI and 38 runs scored through 239 plate appearances this season.

  • Brad Miller DH | SD

    Rangers' Brad Miller: Enters lineup

Miller started at designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and two runs scored in Sunday's 8-4 win over the Dodgers.

Miller made his first start since he was activated from the injured list in late June. The infielder/outfielder has just six plate appearances during that stretch. With both Corey Seager (thumb, IL) and Adolis Garcia (hand) unavailable, Miller could see an uptick in opportunities.

  • Eloy Jimenez DH | TOR

White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Goes yard Sunday

Jimenez went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Twins.

Jimenez took Bailey Ober deep to center in the second inning to get the White Sox on the board. It was his third home run in July and the third time over the last four games he's notched multiple hits. Despite missing some time due to injury, the 26-year-old is enjoying a productive month, slashing .333/.368/.519 with eight RBI, eight runs and a 3:7 BB:K in 15 games.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Cleared to swing bat

Blackmon (hand) took dry swings on the field Sunday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Though he hasn't been cleared to face pitching, Blackmon seems to be gradually regaining strength in his fractured right hand. As Harding notes, Blackmon had previously been limited to taking swings with his right hand controlling the bat, but he was able to use both hands to swing through the air Sunday. The Rockies don't have a timeline for Blackmon's return from the 10-day injured list and probably won't until he's ready to take live batting practice, but those holding him in fantasy leagues probably shouldn't count on him being activated until August.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Dodgers' J.D. Martinez: Won't play Monday

Manager Dave Roberts said Martinez (hamstring) won't be in the lineup Monday against the Blue Jays, but the slugger is expected to return to action Tuesday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Martinez was a late scratch Sunday due to tightness in his left hamstring, but there's apparently not much concern over the injury since Roberts also said an MRI won't be necessary. The 35-year-old has swung a hot bat out of the All-Star break, as he's hitting .345 with two homers and 11 RBI through seven games.

  • Mets' Daniel Vogelbach: Out against southpaw

Vogelbach is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox are bringing a lefty opener (Brennan Bernardino) to the hill for the series finale, so the lefty-hitting Vogelbach will bow out of the starting nine. Rookie Mark Vientos will replace Vogelbach as the Mets' designated hitter.
