Contreras (hamstring) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Contreras missed four games with a tight left hamstring, and it appears his timing was a bit off in his return. The 30-year-old could continue to see some time as the designated hitter as he works back to full strength. He hit .333 with a home run, four doubles, seven RBI and six runs scored in 10 games prior to his injury, so it shouldn't take the catcher long to regain his momentum at the plate.

McCann left Saturday's game against the Marlins with discomfort in his left side and will undergo tests Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Whether the injury is merely soreness or a strain serious enough to send McCann to the injured list should become clearer after the tests. Tomas Nido would be in line for a starting role behind the plate if McCann winds up being forced to miss time.

Bethancourt was traded from the Athletics to the Rays on Saturday in exchange for Cal Stevenson and Christian Fernandez, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

It's been quite the year for Bethancourt, who returned to the majors for the first time since 2017 and performed well enough to catch the eye of an organization famous for spotting talent. Bethancourt was a light-hitting catcher for the early part of his career, hitting .222/.252/.316 in 161 games from 2013 to 2017, but he's posted a nearly average 99 wRC+ (the product of a .249/.298/.385 slash line) this season while making the majority of his starts at first base. Catcher is likely where the Rays see Bethancourt fitting in, as Mike Zunino remains out with a shoulder injury. His bat should play better there, and there's reason to believe he'll keep up his solid performance despite his lack of a track record, as his 14.0 percent barrel rate this season is quite strong.

Stassi will sit Saturday against the Orioles, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Stassi sits for the second time in three days. He hasn't had much success at the plate recently, grabbing just two hits in his last 10 games. Kurt Suzuki will get the start at catcher.

Kolozsvary was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.

Kolozsvary was called up last weekend to provide additional depth behind the dish, but he appeared in just one game during his time on the major-league roster. Michael Papierski should serve as the No. 2 catcher now that Tyler Stephenson (thumb) has been activated from the injured list.

Stephenson (thumb) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday.

Stephenson sustained a fractured thumb June 9 but will rejoin the Reds exactly a month after the injury occurred. The 25-year-old went 4-for-15 with a double, a run, an RBI and eight strikeouts over four rehab games at Triple-A Louisville and should reclaim an everyday role now that he's back to full health. Mark Kolozsvary was sent down to make room for Stephenson on the active roster.

Hedges isn't starting Saturday's game against the Royals.

Hedges returned to the lineup Friday against Kansas City after recovering from a concussion, and he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. Luke Maile is starting behind the dish and batting eighth Saturday.
