Orioles third baseman Manny Machado underwent successful knee surgery Monday in California, MLB.com reports. Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery. 

Machado has an estimated recovery time of six months. A hamstring tendon was used to graft a replacement for Machado's ruptured ligament. 

Machado is expected to miss most of spring training and will likely be delayed to start the regular season as well. 

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has elected to under reconstructive surgery on his left knee, the team announced Thursday. The surgery, which is scheduled for Monday, will require a rehab period of four to six months.

Machado had decided in late September to rehab the injured knee rather than go the surgery route but had a change of heart after consulting with multiple doctors. His status for the beginning of the 2014 season will be dependent on how his recovery from surgery goes.

Rays third baseman Evan Longoria provided a big blast in Monday's American League Division Series Game 3 against Boston. Longoria's three-run homer in the fifth inning off starter Clay Buchholz with two outs gave the Rays new life as they staved off elimination. 

Longoria tied the game at three with his HR, his first of the postseason. He went 1 for 5 in the game and is batting .222 in the ALDS as it heads to Game 4 with the Rays down 2-1 in the series. 

The 28-year-old has a hit in three of the four postseason games he's played this year. He hit just .269 in the regular season with 32 homers and 88 RBI, but he warmed up considerably down the stretch. 

Rays third baseman Evan Longoria came up big in Texas Monday night as Tampa Bay won the one-game playoff to earn the one-game wild card game in Cleveland.

Longoria fell a triple shy of the cycle as he went 3 for 4 with a walk in the game. He homered in the third inning for a two-run shot, his 32nd of the year. He added a double and scored twice.

Longoria finishes his regular season with a .269 average and 88 runs batted in. His big game means the Rays must beat Cleveland if they hope to get into a playoff series.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado consulted with Dr. James Andrews on Monday, and the second opinion he received from him supported the one he already received from the team's medical staff. Dr. Andrews recommended that Machado rest his injured left knee and embark on a rehab program rather than undergoing surgery.

Machado will have the MPL tear re-examined in roughly four weeks, and his next steps will be mapped out at that point. If he does not make sufficient progress, surgery could still be a possibility.

Rays third baseman Evan Longoria blasted his 30th and 31st home runs of the season Wednesday during a rout of the Yankees in New York. Longoria went deep in the sixth inning for a three-run shot off David Huff and added a solo shot in the ninth to cap the blowout.

Longoria has now homered at least 30 times in three different seasons for Tampa Bay. He finished Wednesday's game going 3 for 5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Longoria is batting .266 on the season.

The third baseman, who returned from flu-like symptoms recently, has gone 5 for 9 with five RBI over his last two games against New York.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, just placed on the 60-day DL, will receive a second opinion on his injured knee Monday, The Baltimore Sun reports Wednesday. 

Baltimore team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens has already diagnosed Machado with a torn medial patellar ligament in his left knee and the Orioles are confident the new opinion will remain the same. 

If nothing changes, Machado will begin rehab on the knee over the next 6-8 weeks before he attempts to do some running.

Machado is expected to resume running in around 6-8 weeks and should be ready to begin spring training next year for Baltimore. 

Machado's 2013 season ends with a .283/.314/.432 line, 14 home runs, 71 RBI and six stolen bases in a league-leading 667 at-bats. He also ranks first in the AL with 51 doubles.

The Athletics left Josh Donaldson out of their starting lineup for Wednesday's game at the Angels. Alberto Callaspo got the start at third base in Donaldson's absence.

Prior to Wednesday, Donaldson had started in 15 consecutive games.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado has been diagnosed with a torn medial patella tendon ligament, the Baltimore Sun reports. He has managed to avoid damage to his ACL and MCL, making the diagnosis a positive one.

Machado will need six-to-eight weeks before the can begin light running. One source estimates that there's a 90 percent chance Machado will not need surgery to repair the injury, the Sun reports.
