Bengals' Samaje Perine: Only three touches in Week 2 win

Perine logged two carries for six yards and hauled in his lone target for 16 yards during the Bengals' 20-6 win over the Texans on Sunday.
Perine's three touches were well behind starter Chase Brown's 25, with the former playing 24 of 60 offensive snaps (40.0 percent). Perine's 16-yard catch midway through the third quarter converted a third-and-7 for the Bengals and led to an 18-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Ja'Marr Chase five plays later. Perine is up to 72 scrimmage yards through two regular-season games and is firmly entrenched as the Bengals' RB2 behind Brown. Up next is a Week 3 AFC North tilt against the Steelers, whose defense gave up 119 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries between TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson in a Week 2 loss to the Patriots.

Perine was added to the injury report with an apparent knee injury after opening the week without a listed practice status Wednesday. The running back turned five carries into 20 yards and reeled in all three of his targets for 30 yards during the team's 33-27 win over the Buccaneers in Week 1, but he may have suffered a knee injury at some point during the contest. Perine will have another chance to practice Friday, but if he can't go Sunday against Houston, Tahj Brooks would stand to operate as the team's primary backup option behind Chase Brown in Cincinnati's backfield.

Perine was the only Bengals running back besides starter Chase Brown (16-56-1 rushing line) to record a carry, and the former also finished with Cincinnati's third-highest receiving yardage total. Perine fell off quite a bit as a pass catcher last year, finishing with just 17 receptions for 87 yards over 15 games, so his usage in that capacity Sunday was promising in terms of his potential fantasy value. The Bengals next make a trip to Houston, and though the Texans were one of the league's best defenses last year, they gave up 409 total yards to Buffalo on Sunday.

In Cincinnati's preseason opener versus the Lions on Aug. 13, Perine was involved on the two drives in which Joe Burrow was leading the offense, and the running back had a seven-yard carry and gathered in both targets for 12 yards. While spelling Brown out of the backfield in 2025, Perine recorded 469 yards from scrimmage and three rushing TDs on 101 touches in 15 regular-season games. A similar workload can be expected from Perine in the coming campaign.

As long as Brown remains healthy, Perine's fantasy value is modest, and it's also possible that 2025 sixth-rounder Tahj Brooks carves out a bigger role in 2026 after carrying the ball just 16 times as a rookie.
Perine rushed eight times for 42 yards and caught three of four targets for 10 yards in Cincinnati's 20-18 loss to the Browns on Sunday.
Perine's eight carries were his fourth-most in a game this season, and the veteran running back wraps up the 2025 campaign with 382 yards and three touchdowns on 84 carries. He added 17 catches for 87 scoreless yards. Perine is under contract through 2026 on a $1.4 million salary. He'll turn 31 years old in September and likely isn't guaranteed to make the 53-man roster out of training camp next summer.

Perine had three carries for five yards and a goal-line touchdown in the Bengals' rout of the Cardinals in Week 17. He also caught a pass for eight yards.
Perine played his lowest share of offensive snaps (31 percent) since Week 4, not counting when he got hurt Week 9 early in the loss to the Bears. Perine has been playing through an ankle injury, so it makes a certain amount of sense that he's playing fewer snaps.

Perine rushed seven times for 25 yards and one touchdown in the Bengals' 45-21 win over the Dolphins on Sunday. He added two catches for 16 yards on three targets.
Since coming back from an injury in Week 13, Perine has recorded 41 carries across four games, significantly eating into Chase Brown's workload. Brown, however, wasn't affected much against Miami, scoring a trio of touchdowns Sunday. While Brown is healthy, Perine has minimal fantasy appeal outside of the deepest of fantasy leagues.
