Top Islanders News

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Will start Monday

Sorokin will be the Islanders' starting netminder for Monday's contest against the Jets, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports Sunday.

It was an early call for the Islanders well over 24 hours from puck drop: Sorokin will get another chance in net Monday. The 30-year-old has allowed four goals in both of his starts this season, losing both. He'll have another chance to get his first win of the season, but a high-flying Jets offense with seven goals in the opening two games will present a tough task on the other side.

  • Islanders' Jonathan Drouin: Back from suspension

Drouin has served his one-game suspension and is eligible to return to the lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Jets.

Drouin sat out Saturday's 4-2 loss the Capitals after cross-checking Connor Dewar in the season-opener against Pittsburgh. Drouin will likely return to his role in the top six Monday against the Jets. Before the infraction that caused his suspension, the 30-year-old scored a goal on his only shot in 19:47 of ice time.

  • Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Dishes two assists

Palmieri had two assists, blocked two shots, served two PIM and dished out two hits in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Capitals.

Palmieri stuffed the stat sheet for the second straight game to open the 2025-26 season. Like teammate Bo Horvat, Palmieri posted both of his assists on the power play, which was an area which Palmieri struggled in a year ago. If he can improve his nine-point production with the man advantage from last season, Palmieri could carve out some fantasy value considering he skates on the Islanders' top line at even strength.

  • Islanders' Bo Horvat: Plates pair of helpers

Horvat dished out two assists and had five shots on goal in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Washington.

Horvat picked up his first two points of the season via helpers on two power-play goals. The 30-year-old center is locked into a top-six role for the Islanders and has been steady offensively, scoring 52-plus points in each of the last four seasons. His two power-play points are encouraging considering he had just seven power-play tallies a year ago. Horvat is averaging 4:14 TOI in power-play scenarios through two games this year and can elevate his fantasy value to the next level if he can integrate that aspect back into his game. Horvat should be rostered in all formats with the potential to be a 60-plus point player for the third time in four years with the Islanders.

  • Islanders' Anthony Duclair: Tallies goal in loss

Duclair scored a goal and had two shots on net in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Capitals.

Duclair scored his first goal of the season on a power play in the late stages of Saturday's second period. The 30-year-old's first season in Long Island was stymied by injuries a year ago, as he appeared in just 44 games. His 11-point output was a big step back from his 42-point outburst in 2023-24, but Duclair could bounce back if he stays healthy. Skating in the Islanders' top six on the left wing, Duclair is best left off fantasy rosters outside of deeper leagues for now, but his goal-scoring potential makes him a name to watch moving forward.

  • Islanders' Matthew Schaefer: Scores first career goal

Schaefer tallied a goal, had eight shots on net, and blocked a shot in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Washington.

The future of Long Island hockey has arrived, and his name is Matthew Schaefer. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2025 NHL Draft posted a breakout performance in just his second career game with solid category coverage. He stole the show in the third period, netting his first career goal on a power play. Not only was his stat line complete with eight shots and one block, but his ice time jumped from 17:15 to 26:04, a near nine-minute increase from his debut. The 18-year-old has seemed to gain more trust offensively with 2:40 of power-play time, which gives him a high ceiling for his rookie campaign. If Schaefer's first two games are any indication of what the rest of the season has in store for this year's top pick, he is set to be a great option on the fantasy blue line in all formats. Scoop him up off the waiver wire before it's too late.

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Surrenders four goals

Sorokin stopped 25 of 29 shots in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Capitals.

Sorokin struggled early, allowing the first four goals of the game across 36 minutes. However, he kept the Capitals off the scoresheet in the third period. The 30-year-old netminder has a 0-2-0 record, 4.21 GAA and .860 save percentage through two appearances. It's an unfortunate start to the season for Sorokin, who was one of 10 goalies to reach the 30-win mark last season. Despite the early struggles, Sorokin's in no danger of ceding his starting role to David Rittich. If the Islanders can strengthen their defensive play in front of Sorokin, he could continue to build upon his solid campaign from last season, giving him upside in all fantasy formats.

  • Islanders' Cole Eiserman: Strong weekend versus Colgate

Eiserman scored three goals on 12 shots and added one assist in a pair of wins for Boston University over Colgate University on Friday and Saturday.

Eiserman is having a stellar start to the NCAA season with five goals and an assist in his first three games. The 19-year-old is already seen as one of the top goal-scoring prospects from the 2024 Draft, and he's not slowing down during his sophomore campaign. He had 25 goals in 39 games for the Terriers in 2024-25, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him top that number this season.

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Starting Saturday

Sorokin will guard the home goal against Washington on Saturday, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports.

Sorokin stopped 24 shots in Thursday's 4-3 road loss to Pittsburgh. He will be back between the pipes for the Islanders' home opener. During the 2024-25 regular season, he went 1-1-0 with a 1.53 GAA and a .953 save percentage in two appearances versus the Capitals.

  • Islanders' Jonathan Drouin: Receives one-game ban

Drouin has been suspended for one game by the Department of Player Safety on Friday for his cross-check against Pittsburgh's Connor Dewar.

Drouin's game misconduct came with less than a minute left in the game, which could have been a factor in the league's decision to suspend him since it had little impact on Thursday's tilt. With Drouin unavailable to face the Capitals on Saturday, Maxim Shabanov could be elevated to a second-line role while Marc Gatcomb figures to step into the lineup.

  • Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Hands out helper in loss

Mayfield logged an assist in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins.

Mayfield is set to be a regular in the lineup this year, and his first duty is to serve as a defense partner and mentor for No. 1 pick Matthew Schaefer. The 32-year-old Mayfield will likely remain on the third pairing even if Schaefer moves up later in the year. Mayfield's style isn't flashy, and he's topped the 20-point mark just once in his career, but he's a virtual lock for 100-plus blocked shots, a level he's reached in seven straight seasons.

  • Islanders' Matthew Schaefer: Earns assist in NHL debut

Schaefer recorded an assist in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins.

Schaefer set up Jonathan Drouin's goal at 12:02 of the first period. It's a positive start for the 2025 No. 1 pick, as Schaefer saw 17:15 of ice time in a third-pairing role. He's the lone youngster on the Islanders' blue line, but he could move up the ranks if he continues to play well. Any top pick will get attention in fantasy -- don't overlook Schaefer, as he should be productive on offense as long as he avoids head coach Patrick Roy's doghouse as a rookie.

  • Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Active in loss

Palmieri scored a goal on eight shots and added two PIM in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins.

Palmieri led all skaters with eight shots, and his line with Anders Lee and Mathew Barzal combined for 16 of the Islanders' 37 shots in the game. Typically, Palmieri has been in a second-line role in recent years, so it'll be interesting to see if he can do more with extra ice time on the top line. He had 24 goals and 48 points over 82 regular-season appearances in 2024-25, and another 45-50 point season is a reasonable expectation for this steady veteran.

... See More ... See Less
  • Islanders' Maxim Shabanov: Pots first goal in NHL debut

Shabanov scored his first career goal in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins.

Signed by the Islanders out of the KHL in July, the 25-year-old winger saw just 9:45 of ice time in his NHL debut, the lowest mark on the team, but Shabanov made it count by snapping a one-timer past Tristan Jarry inside the final minute of the second period to tie the game at 3-3. Shabanov's small stature could prevent him from making a consistent impact in North America at the top level, but he has clear offensive skills and finished third in the KHL scoring race last season with 67 points (23 goals, 44 assists) in 65 games. The Isles have a crying need in their top six for some skill to support Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat, and Shabanov could see his grow role once he gets comfortable in his new environment.

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Comes up short against Pens

Sorokin made 24 saves in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Penguins.

Justin Brazeau got sprung for a clear rush from the blue line against Sorokin late in the third period, and the 30-year-old netminder wasn't able to come up with another big stop to preserve a 3-3 tie. The Islanders are projected to be one of the weaker squads in the NHL this season, which will likely prevent Sorokin from regaining the elite ratios he was posting a couple years ago, but with Semyon Varlamov (knee) out indefinitely and David Rittich as his primary backup, he could also be headed for a career-high workload -- he's handled between 52 and 62 appearances in each of the last four seasons.

  • Islanders' Jonathan Drouin: Having hearing with league office

Drouin will have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety on Friday for cross-checking Pittsburgh's Connor Dewar.

Drouin appeared to catch Dewar in the face with a cross-check during Thursday's 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old Drouin was hit with a five-minute cross-checking penalty in addition to a 10-minute game misconduct, though both penalties came with just 15 seconds left in the contest. At a minimum, fantasy managers should expect Drouin to be suspended for at least Saturday's clash with the Capitals, though it could be longer.
