Top Buccaneers News

  • Buccaneers' Tez Johnson: Big impact in preseason finale

Johnson secured all eight targets for 58 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers' 23-19 preseason loss to the Bills on Saturday night.

Johnson comfortably led the Buccaneers in receptions, receiving yards and targets, putting together his second straight noteworthy performance. The rookie seventh-round pick has bounced back from missing the preseason opener by posting a 12-82-1 receiving line on 15 targets over the subsequent pair of games. Johnson is primed to see a somewhat meaningful role to open his NFL career, as injuries to Chris Godwin (PUP-ankle) and Jalen McMillan (neck) are expected to keep both players out for at least the first four games of the regular season.

  • Buccaneers' Trey Palmer: One catch in preseason debut

Palmer (hamstring) secured one of two targets for 13 yards in the Buccaneers' 23-19 preseason loss to the Bills on Saturday night.

The third-year wideout made his preseason debut after overcoming his hamstring issue, and Palmer was able to make his one catch on the Buccaneers' third possession. Palmer is set to reprise his reserve receiver role again in 2025, and he could see a slight uptick in opportunity early with Jalen McMillan (neck) and Chris Godwin (PUP-ankle) not expected to be available for at least the first month of the regular season.

  • Buccaneers' Kyle Trask: Sharp but risk-averse Saturday

Trask started Saturday night's 23-19 preseason loss to the Bills and completed 13 of 17 passes for 93 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while adding one rush for four yards.

Trask played the entire first half with Teddy Bridgewater sidelined due to an illness. As his final line indicates, Trask stuck to high-percentage throws for the most part, and he capped off his performance with a one-yard TD pass to Tez Johnson with under a minute remaining in the first half. Despite Bridgewater having played in just one preseason game and Trask having put together a solid exhibition slate overall, there's still a possibility the latter is on the outside looking in come final roster cuts.

  • Buccaneers' Sean Tucker: Little with four touches Saturday

Tucker rushing three times for two yards and brought in his only target for one yard in the Buccaneers' 23-19 preseason loss to the Bills on Saturday night.

Tucker was the first running back in for the Buccaneers and played on the first two series. The speedy Syracuse product is expected to see a larger role this coming season thanks to his explosiveness, but Tucker still profiles as the No. 3 running back whenever both Bucky Irving and Rachaad White (groin) are healthy. However, if White's injury lingers into Week 1, Tucker could find himself in a robust role for that Sept. 7 road matchup against the Falcons.

  • Buccaneers' Teddy Bridgewater: Out due to illness

Bridgewater won't play in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills due to an illness, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

With No. 1 QB Baker Mayfield set to sit out in Tampa Bay's exhibition finale, Kyle Trask was expected to start, while Bridgewater was in line to enter the contest after him. Now that Bridgewater isn't available Saturday, Connor Bazelak will be tasked with handling any reps under center that don't go to Trask. Bridgewater put some decent tape together last Saturday versus the Steelers, completing six of 11 passes for 85 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions after signing with the team on Aug. 5.

  • Buccaneers' Tristan Wirfs: Likely to miss games

Wirfs (knee) is expected to start the regular season on Tampa Bay's 53-man roster so he can participate in practice, but he likely won't play until October, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The Buccaneers are expected to utilize a similar approach with both Wirfs and wide receiver Chris Godwin (PUP-ankle). Wirfs is currently on the active/PUP list. If Wirfs is sidelined for all of September, he would miss the first four games of the regular season. The Buccaneers could start backup Charlie Heck at left tackle during Wirfs' absence or slide Luke Goedeke over from right tackle to protect Baker Mayfield's blind side.

  • Buccaneers' Chris Godwin: Targeting October return?

The Buccaneers plan to activate Godwin (ankle) from the active/PUP list and carry him on the 53-man roster to begin the regular season so that he will be eligible to practice, though he's considered unlikely to play until October, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Godwin is expected to be ready to practice in some capacity beginning Week 2, and Tampa Bay evidently sees merit in allowing the veteran wideout to begin ramping up as soon as he's able. An October return date would still mean Godwin misses at least the first four games of the regular season, just as if he were to begin the year on IR, with the difference being that he'll be eligible to practice in the interim if carried on the 53-man roster. The Buccaneers' plan is good news with regard to Godwin's chances of hitting the ground running, but it could cause a headache for fantasy managers in seasonal formats, as it means Godwin will have to occupy one of limited roster spots rather than be designated for one of the IR slots common to most fantasy leagues. With Jalen McMillan (neck) also expected to miss time early in the season, Mike Evans, rookie first-round pick Emeka Egbuka and tight end Cade Otton figure to kick off 2025 with increased target volume.

  • Buccaneers' Teddy Bridgewater: QB2 for preseason finale

Bridgewater will serve as the Bucs' backup quarterback in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills, Rock Riley of the Tampa Free Press reports.

Bridgewater looked good as the starter in the Bucs' preseason game against the Steelers this past Saturday, when he led two scoring drives and completed six of 11 passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Trask will serve as the starter in this Saturday's preseason finale, and Bridgewater's and his performance in that game will play a large part in head coach Todd Bowles' decision on who will serve as Baker Mayfield's backup for the 2025 season.

  • Buccaneers' Kyle Trask: Starting in preseason finale

Trask will start Saturday's preseason game against the Bills, Rock Riley of the Tampa Free Press reports.

With Baker Mayfield not playing, Trask will run with the offense to begin Saturday's exhibition contest while Teddy Bridgewater serves as the QB2. Trask and Bridgewater are battling for the Bucs' backup duties, but it was the latter who showed more poise during the Bucs' preseason game against the Steelers this past Saturday. Trask played better in Tampa Bay's first preseason contest against the Titans, but the gap is quite narrow between the two quarterbacks heading into this Saturday's preseason finale.

  • Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield: Won't play in final exhibition

Mayfield won't play in Saturday's preseason game against Buffalo, WDAE Radio's Rock Riley reports.

The Buccaneers used some starters in their second preseason game, but Mayfield wasn't one of them. They'll start Kyle Trask at QB this Saturday, followed by Teddy Bridgewater, allowing the two to continue their competition for the backup QB job. Mayfield, meanwhile, will be on the sideline to keep him healthy ahead of a Week 1 game at Atlanta. The Buccaneers may not have WR Chris Godwin (ankle), WR Jalen McMillan (neck) or LT Tristan Wirfs (knee) available for the contest, but they seem confident in first-round pick Emeka Egbuka stepping up to replace Godwin/McMillan, at least.
