  • Hurricanes' Charlie Cerrato: Secures entry-level deal

Cerrato inked a three-year, entry-level contract with Carolina on Tuesday.

Cerrato will make the jump to the professional ranks after wrapping up his sophomore campaign at Penn St. With the Nittany Lions, the 21-year-old center notched seven goals and 20 assists in 23 contests. Selected by the club in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, Cerrato figures to start 2026-27 in the minors but could make his NHL debut for the Hurricanes at some point next year.

  • Hurricanes' Charlie Cerrato: Secures minor-league tryout

Cerrato will link up with AHL Chicago on a professional tryout agreement, the team announced Tuesday.

By agreeing to a PTO, Cerrato will be eligible to play in the Calder Cup Playoffs, something that wouldn't have been allowed under the CBA if he had signed his entry-level deal. In 23 games for Penn St. this year, the 21-year-old center notched seven goals and 20 helpers. He figures to spend some time developing in the minors before getting a real shot at an NHL roster spot.

  • Hurricanes' Charlie Cerrato: Three-point effort Sunday

Cerrato scored a goal and added two assists in Penn State's 7-3 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday.

Cerrato has had another strong year in the NCAA, racking up six goals and 18 helpers through 18 appearances. He also represented the US Collegiate Selects at the Spengler Cup in Switzerland. Cerrato is on his way to a second point-per-game campaign for Penn State, which makes him look like a pretty good second-round pick by the Hurricanes in 2025.

  • Hurricanes' Charlie Cerrato: Collects weekly honors

Cerrato was named the Big Ten's First Star of the Week on Tuesday.

Cerrato helped lead Penn State to a weekend sweep over Arizona State, compiling two goals, four assists, a plus-4 rating and 12 shots on goal. Five of his points came in a 6-3 win Friday. Cerrato was viewed as a bit of a reach by the Hurricanes when they selected him in the second round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, but he impressed with 42 points in 38 games as a freshman in 2024-25 and is off to a great start this year.
