Top Brent Burns News

  • Avalanche's Brent Burns: Records helper in 1,500th game

Burns posted an assist, three shots on goal and a minus-2 rating in Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Stars.

The helper was Burns' first point in three outings for the Avalanche. This was also his 1,500th NHL game, making him the 23rd player in league history to suit up that many times in the regular season. He's made the last 928 of those appearances consecutively as the player with the longest active ironman streak. Considering he's still playing north of 20 minutes per game makes it all the more impressive for the 40-year-old defenseman, who has settled into a top-four role to begin his time in Colorado.

  • Avalanche's Brent Burns: Back at practice

Burns (undisclosed) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice, per Brennan Vogt of Hockey Mountain High.

After tweaking something, Burns didn't take part in Saturday's practice and wasn't an option for either of Colorado's preseason games against Utah on Sunday. However, he has put the minor issue behind him. Burns signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Avalanche in the summer after earning six goals and 29 points in 82 regular-season outings for Carolina in 2024-25.

  • Avalanche's Brent Burns: Dealing with minor injury

Burns won't participate in either of Sunday's preseason games due to a minor undisclosed injury, per Aarif Deen of Colorado Hockey Now on Saturday.

Burns tweaked something, and there's no reason to have him play in an early preseason game if he's anything less than 100 percent. He had six goals and 29 points in 82 regular-season appearances with Carolina in 2024-25. Burns inked a one-year deal with the Avalanche over the summer. His role with the team might be limited at 40 years old, but Burns will probably receive some power-play ice time.

  • Avalanche's Brent Burns: Links up with Colorado

Burns signed a one-year contract with the Avalanche on Wednesday.

Per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, it's a $1 million contract with up to $3 million in bonuses for games-played thresholds. Burns will join a contending team for his age-40 season. With Cale Makar firmly entrenched on the top power-play unit, Burns will likely see time on the second unit and may see reduced ice time in all situations. Burns was limited to 29 points in 82 regular-season contests last year and has declined significantly in each of the last two seasons, but he's still averaged over 20 minutes of ice time per game, so he's far from running on empty even this late in his career. He has played in 925 consecutive games and would become the second player in league history to play in 1,000 games without an absence if he stays healthy for the vast majority of 2025-26.

  • Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Pair of points Sunday

Burns managed a goal on two shots, an assist, two blocked shots and a plus-1 rating Sunday in a 5-2 win over the Devils in Game 4.

Burns got on the scoresheet for the first time this postseason and was able to do so with a two-point performance, which snapped a five-game dry spell. The veteran defenseman set up the first of Andrei Svechnikov's three goals early in the first period before giving Carolina a 4-2 lead at 14:14 of the third. Burns has accounted for five shots on goal, five blocked shots and a minus-1 rating while averaging 22:31 of ice time over four playoff outings. The Hurricanes will return home with a chance to eliminate the Devils in Game 5 on Tuesday.

  • Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Collects two assists Thursday

Burns recorded two assists, two PIM and a plus-2 rating in Thursday's 5-4 shootout loss to the Capitals.

This was Burns' first multi-point effort since Jan. 15 versus the Sabres. He helped out on third-period goals by Jordan Martinook and Seth Jarvis as the Hurricanes dug out of a 4-2 hole to force overtime. Burns is up to 28 points, 172 shots on net, 97 blocked shots and a plus-8 rating over 78 appearances this season, so he's still at risk of falling short of the 30-point mark for the second time in five years.

  • Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Nets goal in loss

Burns scored a goal on three shots and went plus-2 in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Red Wings.

He ended a four-game point drought and earned his first goal since March 6 versus the Bruins. The 40-year-old defenseman is up to six goals, 26 points, 170 shots on net, 94 blocked shots and a plus-13 rating through 75 appearances. Burns is set for unrestricted free agency this summer, but it's unclear if the NHL's active ironman will opt to continue his career. If he does, he will have a chance to become the second player in league history to play in 1,000 consecutive contests.

For the season, Burns is up to 25 points, 161 shots on net, 92 blocked shots and a plus-7 rating across 70 appearances. He continues to handle a top-four role and some power-play time.

Burns scored a goal on three shots, blocked three shots and went plus-2 in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Bruins.

Burns picked up an assist in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Toronto.

Burns skated in his 900th straight game, dating back to Nov. 21, 2013. The native of Barrie, Ontario, is the sixth player in NHL history to accomplish the feat. Burns will be 40 in a couple of weeks (March 9), which means he would need to play well into 2026-27 to take Phil Kessel's ironman streak (1,064).

Burns registered an assist, four shots on goal and two PIM in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Kings.

Burns' helper was the 900th point of his career, making him the 13th defenseman in NHL history to get to that mark. He hasn't done all that well on offense this season, picking up 19 points over 53 appearances. He entered Saturday on a seven-game drought before assisting on Eric Robinson's third-period tally. Burns has added 125 shots on net, 73 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating while seeing top-four minutes as usual.

Burns notched two assists and eight shots on goal in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Sabres.

Burns has racked up five helpers and a plus-4 rating over his last five contests. Burns is now at 18 points, 104 shots on net, 63 blocked shots and a minus-1 rating through 45 appearances. He's still seeing big minutes, but the 39-year-old is not a must-have player in fantasy at this stage of his career.
