Both pucks that got past Sorokin came in the first period, the game-winner on a Toronto power play, but the 31-year-old netminder shut the door the rest of the way and at least gave the Isles a chance to mount a comeback. Sorokin has played more than 50 games and produced at least 25 wins in each of the last five seasons, and his workload doesn't figure to slack in 2026-27 with 38-year-old Semyon Varlamov and his balky knee as his main backup.

Sorokin was the first goalie off the ice during Tuesday's morning skate, placing him in line to start the Islanders' season opener. The 31-year-old backstop had a lot of highs to look back on from the 2025-26 campaign, where he posted a 29-24-2 record, a 2.68 GAA, a .906 save percentage and seven shutouts across 55 regular-season outings. As he led the league in clean sheets a season ago, Sorokin has the ability to flip a fantasy matchup on its head, making him an elite option in all league formats to begin the upcoming season.

Sorokin stopped 22 of 26 shots in Saturday's 4-1 preseason loss to the Devils.
Sorokin faced considerably more pressure than Allen and surrendered all four goals during the opening two periods. Despite the final line, Sorokin made several difficult stops as the game progressed, including a third-period breakaway save on Jack Hughes. It was Sorokin's first full game of the preseason after splitting his previous appearance, and the Islanders finished exhibition play 1-3-0. Sorokin is slated to open the 2026-27 season as the No. 1 goaltender ahead of the season opener versus the Maple Leafs on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Slated to start Saturday
Sorokin is slated to start Saturday's preseason finale at home against the Devils, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.
Semyon Varlamov will draw the home start against the Rangers on Friday, while Sorokin will defend the home crease during the Islanders' final preseason matchup in the second half of the back-to-back set. Sorokin started Tuesday's road preseason game against the Rangers and allowed three goals on nine shots while playing approximately half the game. He's expected to play the full game Saturday and appears to be in line to serve as the Islanders' No. 1 netminder to begin the regular season.

He is 29-22-2 with seven shutouts, 2.66 GAA and .908 save percentage. Sorokin is tied with Jet Greaves for 12th overall in save percentage and with Scott Wedgewood and John Gibson in wins. He will need to be near perfect going forward as the Isles attempt a playoff miracle -- with the win, the Isles moved within one point of the Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan Division. There are three games remaining for each team.
