  • Lew Nichols: Doesn't make 53-man roster

The Steelers waived Nichols on Monday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports. The 2023 seventh-rounder caught on with the Steelers in late July after being let go by the Eagles. He finished the preseason with 11 carries for 87 yards and five catches (on eight targets) for 36 yards. Nichols' efforts weren't enough to crack the 53-man roster, and he'll have the opportunity to sign with a team in need of backfield depth if he clears waivers.

  • Lew Nichols: Cut by Philly

The Eagles waived Nichols on Tuesday. Nicholas was cut in order to make room for the signing of veteran edge rusher Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Nichols, who'll turn 24 next month, has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game.

  • Lew Nichols: Parts ways with Philadelphia again

The Eagles cut Nichols from their practice squad Saturday. It's been a roller-coaster season for Nichols, who was first cut by the Eagles in late August after spending the offseason on a reserve/future contract. He was signed to Philadelphia's practice squad in late December but was cut five days later, and he then re-signed with the practice squad this past Thursday before being let go again Saturday. Tight end Nick Muse was brought back to the Eagles' practice squad Saturday in a corresponding move.

  • Lew Nichols: Signed to Eagles' practice squad

Philadelphia signed Nichols to the practice squad Thursday. The 2023 seventh-round pick spent most of the 2024 regular season as a free agent after failing to make the Eagles' 53-man roster at the end of training camp in late August. He had a brief stint on Philadelphia's practice squad in late December, but he subsequently let go on New Year's Eve. Nichols' addition to the Eagles' practice squad provides depth at running back due to Kenneth Gainwell being in concussion protocol while also working through a knee injury. The Eagles cut tight end Nick Muse in order to make room for Nichols on the practice squad.

  • Lew Nichols: Back with Philadelphia

The Eagles signed Nichols to the practice squad Thursday. Nichols spent most of the 2023 regular season on the Eagles' practice squad after being let go with an injury settlement by the Packers in September of 2023. He failed to make Philadelphia's 53-man roster at the end of training camp, but he will join the Eagles' practice squad after spending most of the 2024 campaign without a team. Nichols could be elevated to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Cowboys if third-string running back Will Shipley (concussion) is not cleared to play.

  • Lew Nichols: Cut by Eagles

Nichols was waived by the Eagles on Tuesday, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Nichols signed a reserve/future contract with the Eagles in January, and he compiled 22 receiving yards on six catches while adding 30 rushing yards on 15 carries and 59 yards on three kickoff returns during the preseason. If he clears waivers, there's a good chance he joins Philadelphia's practice squad.

  • Lew Nichols: Leaving Titletown

Green Bay waived Nichols (shoulder) from injured reserve with an injury settlement Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. A week after sending Nichols to IR, the Packers have decided to part ways with the seventh-round rookie. He's set to become a free agent, but he won't be able to sign with another team until he's fully healthy.

  • Packers' Lew Nichols: Reverts to IR

Nichols (shoulder) reverted to the Packers' injured reserve Wednesday, per the NFL's transaction log. Nichols continues to manage a shoulder injury that sidelined him much of training camp. He's set to miss the entire 2023 season due to the timing of his placement on IR, unless he and Green Bay can agree on an injury settlement.

  • Lew Nichols: Waived with injury designation

The Packers waived/injured Nichols (shoulder) on Tuesday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports. Nichols was nagged by a shoulder injury for much of camp, which limited his chances at making the final roster. He will now likely revert to the Packers' injured reserve and face the possibility of missing the entire season, assuming he clears waivers.

  • Packers' Lew Nichols: Not playing Saturday

Nichols (shoulder) is not suiting up for the Packers' preseason finale against the Seahawks on Saturday, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. The running back has been dealing with a shoulder injury since mid-August and has not played in the preseason. Nichols, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, is competing for a depth role behind Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon as cutdown day approaches.

  • Packers' Lew Nichols: Running back depth for Pack

The Packers selected Nichols in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 235th overall. Nichols opted to stay close to home and spent his collegiate career at Central Michigan despite having offers from bigger schools. He had a dominant 2021 season, during which he posted 1,848 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns while also tallying 40 receptions. At 220 pounds, Nichols will likely be more of a two-down back -- at best -- as a pro, but there could be opportunity in the Green Bay backfield down the road with AJ Dillon set to hit free agency after the 2023 campaign.
