HQ Training Camp Tour: Expectations for the Bears This Season

Player Outlook
Excitement about Kmet in Ben Johnson's offense didn't last very long as the team selected Colston Loveland with the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. We expect Loveland to be the primary pass-catching tight end in Chicago, so if Kmet is still on the Bears when you draft you can leave him undrafted. Kmet is a stash in deeper Dynasty leagues because he is still probably a top-30 TE in the league and the right spot could be a top-12 Fantasy TE at some point in the future. It is much easier to stash him if your league is a tight end-premium league.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Rips off big gain Sunday

Kmet took his only reception for 29 yards in Sunday's preseason win over the Bills. Kmet was the only question mark amongst the first-team offense heading into Sunday's dress rehearsal, but he wound up suiting up after working with the training staff pregame. The veteran starter showed no ill effects from the minor back injury he was nursing earlier in camp, ripping off a 29-yard gain with his only touch against Buffalo. Kmet posted a modest 47-474-4 receiving line in 17 games last season, but he will face playing time competition after the Bears drafted TE Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick in this year's draft.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Might not suit up versus Bills

Kmet may not suit up with the rest of Chicago's starters during Sunday's preseason game against Buffalo, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Bears are expected to play their starters versus the Bills, according to Sean Hammond of the Chicago Tribune. This would include Kmet as TE1, but he was seen working under the supervision of members of Chicago's training staff during early pregame warmups, which indicates that he's not guaranteed to participate in Sunday's exhibition. The 26-year-old was previously sidelined with a back injury for a couple days during training camp before he returned to the field Aug. 8. If Kmet is out, then rookie first-round pick Colston Loveland would be in line to start ahead of fellow tight end Durham Smythe.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Back at practice

Kmet (undisclosed) returned to practice Thursday, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Kmet left practice early Tuesday, so whatever was bothering him clearly wasn't a serious issue. Kmet has been active with the first-team offense during camp despite the Bears using the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 Draft on Colston Loveland. New coach Ben Johnson is expected to involve both tight ends this season.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Avoids significant injury

Kmet (undisclosed) was forced to leave the Bears' practice early Tuesday, Adam Hoge of AllCHGO.com reports. Kmet exited practice with a trainer after suffering an undisclosed injury, but he has reportedly avoided anything serious. The tight end can be considered day-to-day as the team approaches its preseason opener Sunday versus the Dolphins.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Embraces TE tandem vision

Kmet remains a key part of Chicago's 12-personnel-heavy offense, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports. Despite initially being surprised by the Bears' selection of Colston Loveland, Kmet has bought into coach Ben Johnson's plan to use both tight ends. Johnson ran the NFL's third-most plays out of 12 personnel last year, and Kmet is expected to be on the field frequently in those sets. His role as a core piece in two-TE packages should provide limited fantasy viability, as target volume likely remains capped with Loveland expected to be the primary pass catcher.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Facing target competition

The Bears are looking forward to using both Kmet and first-round draft choice Colston Loveland in two tight-end sets, " Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com reports. In 2024, Kmet recorded 47 receptions for 474 yards and four touchdowns on 55 targets, marking his least productive season since his rookie year in 2020. After playing 87 percent of the offensive snaps last season, Kmet now faces significant competition following the first-round selection of Loveland, whose arrival could sharply reduce his role. Although Loveland is expected to be an adequate blocker, the Bears likely drafted the former Michigan standout for his ability to create mismatches in the passing game. Unless the situation shifts during training camp, Kmet may go undrafted in the majority of fantasy leagues.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Disappointing season concludes

Kmet caught both his targets for three yards in the Bears' 24-22 win over the Packers on Sunday. Kmet posted a career year in 2023, recording 73 catches on 90 targets for 719 yards and six touchdowns while serving as the de facto No. 2 option in the team's passing attack. The Bears had three quality wide receivers in 2024 however after bringing in Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze to support DJ Moore, while rookie QB Caleb Williams was not an immediate success in the NFL. As a result, Kmet was targeted just 55 times, leading to 474 yards and four touchdowns. In terms of receptions and yardage, this was the tight end's worst season since his rookie campaign in 2020. Kmet will need the Chicago passing attack to take a major step forward under its new coaching staff if he has any hope of being a solid fantasy option again, although if Allen departs in free agency, it could open up more looks for the TE. Kmet is under contract with the Bears through 2027.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: TEs to Sit

Kmet had no targets in Week 17 against Seattle, which is the second time in his past four games without a target. He scored a touchdown in Week 16 against Detroit, but he only had 8.9 PPR points, which is the fifth game in a row with single digits in PPR. He had three catches for 42 yards on three targets against Green Bay in Week 11 for 7.2 PPR points, and that's probably the best you should expect from Kmet in Week 18.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Blanked in Thursday's loss

Kmet wasn't targeted in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Seahawks. Kmet was far from the only Chicago player to post an underwhelming stat line as the Bears produced just 179 yards of offense en route to a 10th consecutive defeat. The lone target among Chicago's tight ends Thursday went to Gerald Everett. Kmet will look to bounce back Week 18 against a Packers defense that permitted him to catch three passes for 42 yards back in Week 11.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: TEs to Sit

Kmet scored a touchdown in Week 16 against Detroit, but don't go chasing that production in Week 17 against Seattle. Kmet only had two targets against the Lions, and he finished with two catches for 9 yards and the score for 8.9 PPR points. He's now scored fewer than 9.0 PPR points in eight of his past nine games and four in a row, and the Seahawks haven't allowed a tight end to score a touchdown since Week 8. Kmet is not worth trusting in the majority of leagues.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Scores touchdown in losing effort

Kmet caught two passes on two targets for nine yards and a touchdown in the Bears' 34-17 loss to the Lions on Sunday. Kmet found the end zone for the first time since Chicago's Week 7 bye. In the last three games, the tight end has a total of three receptions on three targets. Kmet has only one game with more than four targets over his last eight contests. Although the veteran is a talented player, his scoring floor remains low due to lack of volume.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: TEs to Sit

Kmet had another disappointing game in Week 15 at Minnesota with one catch for 15 yards on one target, and he has now scored 7.2 PPR points or less in seven of his past eight games. He also hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 6, and the Lions held Kmet to three catches for 26 yards on three targets in Week 13 on Thanksgiving.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: One grab in loss

Kmet caught his only target for 14 yards in the Bears' 30-12 loss to the Vikings on Monday. Kmet has slowed down drastically since the Bears' Week 7 bye. The veteran has produced 14 yards or fewer in five of the last eight games. In addition, Kmet has only seen four targets over the last three games, catching all four for 40 yards. The tight end will remain a risky lineup option in the fantasy playoffs.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: TEs to Sit

Kmet is struggling coming into Week 14 at San Francisco, and he's not worth trusting in the majority of leagues. He has scored 7.2 PPR points or less in five of his past six games and hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 6. The 49ers have allowed one touchdown to a tight end since Week 5, and only four tight ends have scored double digits in PPR against San Francisco this season. Kmet is only worth starting in the deepest of leagues.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Brings in all three targets Thursday

Kmet recorded three catches (on three targets) for 26 yards during Thursday's 23-20 loss at Detroit. Four days removed from earning 10 targets during a defeat to the Vikings, Kmet fell back to what he more or less has received most weeks this season (26 targets in the nine games in which he didn't see double-digit looks). Elsewhere in the Bears' skill ranks Thursday, DJ Moore led the way by a large margin with an 8-97-1 line on 16 targets, Keenan Allen scored twice among his five catches for 73 yards on eight targets, and Rome Odunze (2-25-0 on six targets) and D'Andre Swift (2-35-0 on three targets) also got in the act. With that knowledge, Kmet likely will resume his modest role in Chicago's offense in his next game Sunday, Dec. 8 in San Francisco.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: TEs to Sit

I love what Kmet did in Week 12 against Minnesota with seven catches for 64 yards on 10 targets, and I hope that's a sign of things to come in the new offense under coordinator Thomas Brown. But this is a bad matchup for Kmet in Week 13 since the Lions are No. 1 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to opposing tight ends. Detroit has allowed one touchdown to a tight end all season, which was A.J. Barner in Week 4, and Barner is the lone tight end to score double digits in PPR points against the Lions. Kmet is not worth starting in the majority of leagues given the matchup.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Week 13 Waiver Priority List

The matchup for Kmet isn't ideal in Week 13 at Detroit since the Lions are No. 1 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to opposing tight ends, but Kmet just had 10 targets in Week 12 against Minnesota in the second game under new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. Kmet finished with seven catches for 64 yards, and hopefully, that's a sign of things to come. After facing the Lions, he gets San Francisco in Week 14 and a rematch with the Vikings in Week 15, and Kmet is worth adding for up to 5 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: TEs to Sit

I started the week encouraged by Kmet since he played a season-high 97 percent of the snaps in the first game under new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown in Week 11 against Green Bay. But he only had three catches for 42 yards on three targets against the Packers, and the matchup against the Vikings isn't ideal. Minnesota has only allowed two touchdowns to tight ends all season and none since Week 4, and only one tight end has scored more than 4.5 PPR points against the Vikings in their past five games.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Week 12 Waiver Priority List

Kmet had another quiet game in Week 11 against Green Bay with three catches for 42 yards on three targets, but he did play a season-high 97 percent of the snaps in the first game under new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. If that continues then more production should follow, and I don't mind taking a chance on Kmet in deeper leagues for 1 percent of your remaining FAB heading into Week 12 against Minnesota.

  • Bears' Cole Kmet: Tallies three catches Sunday

Kmet hauled in all three targets for 42 yards during Sunday's 20-19 loss to the Packers. QB Caleb Williams experienced a bounceback Week 11 against a Green Bay defense that often put up little resistance, and the Bears' top three wide receivers all earned at least seven targets. Meanwhile, Kmet again remained mostly quiet as he has since the Bears' Week 7 bye, putting together a cumulative 6-69-0 line on eight targets over the last four games. This may be the status quo moving forward for the fifth-year pro, and his next chance to produce will arrive next Sunday versus the Vikings.
