Chargers' Charlie Kolar: Out Week 3, but avoiding IR
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday that Kolar (forearm) won't play Sunday in Buffalo but is expected to avoid placement on injured reserve, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.
After undergoing surgery on his fractured left forearm Monday, Kolar had been expected to head to injured reserve and return after missing the minimum four games. However, Harbaugh noted that Kolar ended up receiving a more favorable prognosis than expected once surgery was completed, and the Chargers are now optimistic that the 27-year-old can return to action prior to their Week 7 bye. Kolar will still need to miss at least one game, and with David Njoku (fibula) still ticketed for IR, Oronde Gadsden appears likely to operate as Los Angeles' clear No. 1 tight end for Week 3.

Chargers' Charlie Kolar: Eyeing four-week return from surgery
Kolar plans to undergo surgery to repair a broken forearm and is hoping to return from injured reserve when first eligible for the Chargers' Week 8 game against the Rams, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
After signing a three-year, $24.3 million deal with the Chargers in March, Kolar had opened the season as the team's top blocking tight end, a key role in Mike McDaniel's offense, while contributing three receptions for 21 yards on three targets. He exited in the second half of Sunday's 26-14 loss to the Raiders due to the forearm fracture. With Kolar and David Njoku (fibula) both expected to be placed on IR within the next few days, Oronde Gadsden is likely to see a major uptick in snaps as the new No. 1 tight end on the depth chart, although fullback Alec Ingold could also see more work as well.

Kolar was spotted with his left arm in a sling following Sunday's loss, and the injury is severe enough for him to warrant a stint on IR. As a result, Kolar will be forced to miss at least the next four games, making him ineligible to play until Week 8 against the Rams. Kolar did not see a target from Justin Herbert during Sunday's loss, though that's not entirely surprising considering he posted a 10-142-2 line (on 15 targets) across 17 regular-season games with the Ravens last year. Gadsden and Njoku figure to operate as the Chargers' pass-catching tight ends this season, with Kolar more heavily involved as a blocker and in goal-line packages as an occasional red-zone threat.

Chargers' Charlie Kolar: Splits first-team snaps with Njoku
Kolar and David Njoku both started Thursday's preseason game against San Francisco. Kolar finished with one catch for nine yards on eight snaps.
Njoku played just five snaps without seeing a target. Oronde Gadsden, meanwhile, wasn't spotted until the second quarter. Gadsden might be the team's best receiving threat at the position, but there's a real chance that the Week 1 snap counts reflect a preseason depth chart with Njoku and Kolar listed as co-starters. It doesn't look like an especially friendly situation for fantasy managers, with targets potentially split between three TEs in an offense that also uses a fullback at times. Kolar, in particular, isn't likely to see much playing time in clear passing situations, which makes mainstream fantasy relevance unlikely.

Chargers' Charlie Kolar: Agrees to three-year deal with LAC
Kolar agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract with the Chargers on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Once Kolar's deal is made official Wednesday at the start of the new league year, he will become the league's highest-paid blocking tight end, per Garafolo. The deal includes $17 million in guaranteed money. Perhaps the Chargers also see some untapped pass-catching potential in Kolar, who had just 30 catches across four regular seasons with the Ravens while working behind Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely.

Ravens' Charlie Kolar: Solid season in contract year
Kolar finished the season with 10 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 15 targets over 17 games.
It was a strong season from Kolar, who played in all 17 games for the first time in his career. His snap count jumped significantly, going from 230 to 402, and he posted career highs across the board in his receiving production. Though Kolar's 15 targets show that he's not necessarily a staple of the passing game, the Iowa State product has shown himself to be efficient with his opportunities throughout his career. Over four seasons (47 games), Kolar has caught 30 of 41 targets for 409 yards (9.97 YPT) and four touchdowns. Mark Andrews is set to stay in Baltimore for the long run, and now Baltimore must make a call on who to retain between Kolar and Isaiah Likely as both hit free agency this offseason.
