  • Donovan Edwards: Lands with Commanders

Washington signed Edwards to the practice squad Wednesday, Commanders writer Ben Standig reports. Edwards spent the preseason with the Jets and flashed potential. He fell short of a roster spot in a crowded backfield, but he'll have a new opportunity with the Commanders, who have a less settled running back depth chart.

  • Donovan Edwards: Fails to make Jets roster

Edwards was waived Tuesday, Randy Lange and Eric Allen of the Jets' official site report. Edwards had a productive preseason, but the rookie out of Michigan failed to win a roster spot in a Jets backfield that consists of Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis (ankle) and Kene Nwangwu heading into the regular season. Assuming Edwards passes through waivers unclaimed, he's likely to end up on the Jets' practice squad.

  • Jets' Donovan Edwards: Posts 63 yards in preseason opener

Edwards rushed nine times for 42 yards and caught his only target for 21 yards in Saturday's 30-10 preseason win over the Packers. Edwards didn't log a touch until halfway through the third quarter but played well once he got into the game. The rookie running back is a contender to land on the Jets' practice squad after signing with the team in April as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan, but he's unlikely to earn a roster spot over Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis (ankle) or Kene Nwangwu (calf), the last two of whom got banged up Saturday with injuries that are expected to be minor.

  • Donovan Edwards: Set to join Gang Green

Edwards is slated to sign with the Jets as an undrafted free agent, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports. Edwards spent his four-year college career with Michigan. His best season came in 2022, when he rushed for 991 yards and seven touchdowns on 140 carries while adding 18 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Once viewed as a potential top-100 pick, Edwards saw his YPC dip from 7.1 in 2022 to 4.4 over the 2023-24 seasons. He displayed a lack of patience while manoeuvring around the trenches, but his quickness and pass-catching ability give him a chance at cracking the Jets' 53-man roster. If the signing is official, Edwards will use OTAs and training camp to compete with Isaiah Davis, Kene Nwangwu and Zach Evans for a depth spot in the running back room behind Breece Hall and Braelon Allen.
