  • Steelers' Skylar Thompson: Headed to IR

Thompson (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Thompson popped up on the Steelers' injury report with a hamstring injury prior to their Week 1 win over the Jets, and the issue now appears serious enough for him to land on IR. Pittsburgh's emergency third quarterback will now miss at least four games, with his earliest possible return coming in Week 7 against the Bengals. With rookie Will Howard (hand) also on IR, the Steelers' quarterback room now consists of just Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.

  • Steelers' Skylar Thompson: Inactive, serving as emergency QB

Thompson (hamstring) is inactive for Sunday's Week 1 clash against the Seahawks but is listed as Pittsburgh's emergency third quarterback, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Thompson landed on the injury report Friday due to a hamstring issue, but he's at least healthy enough to be available should both Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph exit with an injury, illness or ejection. Thompson is third in Pittsburgh's QB pecking order, so he'd likely have been inactive as the emergency third quarterback even had the hamstring issue not popped up. His participation (or lack thereof) in practice next week should provide insight about his progression from the injury.

  • Steelers' Skylar Thompson: Questionable due to hamstring

Thompson (hamstring) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Jets, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Thompson popped up on Friday's injury report with a hamstring injury that limited his practice participation Friday. Even if he gains clearance to play, Thompson isn't expected to be anything more than the emergency third quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.

  • Steelers' Skylar Thompson: Stellar in preseason opener

Thompson completed 20 of 28 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns while rushing once for three yards during Saturday's 31-25 preseason win over the Jaguars. The 2022 seventh-rounder seems like a longshot to make the Steelers' 53-man roster to begin the regular season behind Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph and Will Howard (hand), but Thompson made a strong impression during Saturday's preseason opener. The 28-year-old should continue to get increased reps while Howard is sidelined, but it seems most likely that Thompson is competing for a spot on Pittsburgh's practice squad or a roster spot elsewhere.

  • Steelers' Skylar Thompson: Inks deal with Pittsburgh

The Steelers signed Thompson to a reserve/future contract Tuesday. Selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Dolphins, Thompson spent the past three seasons with Miami as part of the team's backup situation behind Tua Tagovailoa. Thompson appeared in 10 regular-season contests in that time and even started Miami's wild-card playoff game against the Bills as a rookie. Thompson, however, looked overwhelmed when forced into action, completing 99 of 183 passes (54.1 percent) for 941 yards (5.14 yards per attempt), two touchdowns and five interceptions across those 11 contests, while absorbing 16 sacks. He'll compete for a backup gig in Pittsburgh this upcoming offseason.

  • Skylar Thompson: Moves back to practice squad

Miami reverted Thompson to its practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log. Tua Tagovailoa missed the Dolphins' Week 18 loss to the Jets due to a hip injury, and Thompson was consequently elevated from the practice squad to serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback. He didn't end up seeing any action, however, with Tyler Huntley playing all 70 of the team's offensive snaps under center. Thompson finished the regular season having gotten on the field for three contests, completing 21 of 33 passes for 187 yards with no TDs or INTs while adding one rush for four yards.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Elevated for Week 18

The Dolphins elevated Thompson from their practice squad to their active roster Saturday. With Tua Tagovailoa (hip) deemed doubtful for Sunday's matchup versus the Jets, Tyler Huntley will likely start at quarterback for Miami. As a result, Thompson is probably going to be needed to serve as the team's backup signal-caller. Thompson made a start in Tagovailoa's stead Week 3 versus Seattle, but he has logged just two offensive snaps without throwing a pass since then while Huntley has emerged as the Dolphins' preferred No. 2 QB.

  • Skylar Thompson: Sticking around in Miami

The Dolphins signed Thompson to the practice squad Tuesday. Thompson was waived from the Dolphins' active roster Saturday after losing out on the backup quarterback job to Tyler Huntley. Thompson has opted to remain in Miami on the practice squad and could serve as the Dolphins' emergency quarterback behind Huntley and Tua Tagovailoa for the final three games of the 2024 regular season.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Emergency third QB Sunday

Thompson (ribs) is inactive as the Dolphins' inactive emergency third quarterback for Sunday's game against the Colts. Though deemed a full practice participant this past week, Thompson approached the contest listed as questionable. Now that he's been listed as the team's emergency quarterback versus Indianapolis, Tim Boyle is slated to back up Tyler Huntley in the continued absence of Tua Tagovailoa (concussion).

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Questionable despite full practices

Thompson (ribs) practiced without limitations all week but is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Colts, Chris Perkins of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Thompson is more likely than not to dress considering he posted three full practices, but he hasn't quite received a firm green light to return from the rib injury he suffered Week 3. Even if Thompson suits up Sunday, he'll be the backup to Tyler Huntley.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Practicing in full coming off bye

Thompson (ribs) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. Thompson looks back to full health after a ribs injury kept him inactive for Miami's last two contests, putting him in position to work as the top backup to Tyler Huntley during Sunday's road matchup against the Colts. Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) remains on IR and won't be eligible to practice prior to Oct. 23, and Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has already indicated that Huntley will likely keep a grip on the starting gig until Miami's franchise quarterback returns.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Won't start Monday

Thompson (ribs) may operate as the third-string quarterback after it was announced Tyler Huntley would start Monday against the Titans, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports. For what it's worth, this doesn't seem to be a decision made due to Thompson's injury, as the third-year quarterback practiced in limited fashion all week and is listed as questionable for Monday's contest. In the same report, it was also announced Tim Boyle would serve as the team's backup behind Huntley, leaving Thompson to fall to third string after struggling to the tune of 5.6 yards per attempt on 13 completions before leaving early in the third quarter in the Week 3 loss to Seattle due to a ribs injury.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Beats out White for backup QB job

Thompson has secured the backup quarterback job behind Tua Tagovailoa after the Dolphins released Mike White on Sunday, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports. Thompson operated as the Dolphins' emergency quarterback for all of 2023 while White was the backup behind Tagovailoa. It was an open competition for the No. 2 job between Thompson and White during the offseason and training camp, and the former won the battle by completing 35 of 61 passes for 379 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions across three preseason games. Thompson was selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he appeared in seven regular-season games in his rookie year, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 534 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Working as emergency QB in Week 14

Thompson (coach's decision) is inactive and will serve as Miami's emergency third quarterback against the Titans on Monday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Thompson hasn't yet been active for a game this season, though he's consistently been Miami's emergency quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa and Mike White. Thompson won't be able to enter Monday night's contest unless both Tagovailoa and White are unable to continue due to injury or disqualification.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Officially named starter for Sunday

Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Friday that Thompson will start Sunday's playoff game in Buffalo, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports. The Dolphins didn't envision Thompson starting on wild card weekend when they selected him in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but the rookie out of Kansas State will get the opportunity to do so, as Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) remains sidelined and Teddy Bridgewater is hampered by a pinkie finger issue on his throwing hand. Bridgewater has been practicing in limited fashion and could dress as the backup to Thompson, who appeared in seven games (two starts) during the regular season but didn't throw for more than 166 yards in any game while posting a 1:3 TD:INT.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Practices in full

Thompson (ankle) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports. Per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com, head coach Mike McDaniel indicated Monday that Thompson sustained "some bumps and bruises" during the Dolphins' Week 18 win over the Jets, but the quarterback's ankle injury didn't prevent him from participating fully Wednesday. Meanwhile, McDaniel told Louis-Jacques that the Dolphins are currently preparing for Thompson to start Sunday's wild-card game against the Bills, with Teddy Bridgewater still working his way back from a dislocated pinky finger on his throwing hand as well as a knee issue. Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa remains in the concussion protocol and won't be available this weekend.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Will start Sunday

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Thompson will start Sunday's game against the Jets, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports. Per Louis-Jacques, the Dolphins hope that Teddy Bridgewater (finger/knee) will be available in a backup role Sunday after making "unbelievable" progress in his recovery from a dislocated finger this week, but with Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) still out, Thompson is on track to make his second start of the season. Despite the rookie seventh-round pick's limited track record at the NFL level, he represents a lineup option for fantasy managers in a week in which various teams could be limiting or holding out their regular signal-callers as the postseason approaches. Miami needs both a win and a New England loss to earn a playoff spot.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Won't dress Sunday

Thompson (coach's decision) is listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Lions. Thompson is considered a healthy scratch for Sunday's matchup in Detroit, after he recently overcame a thumb injury he suffered in Week 6 versus the Vikings. While Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater remain healthy, the rookie will likely continue watching from the sidelines.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: No injury designation

Thompson doesn't have an injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Lions, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Thompson was upgraded to a full participant Friday after logging back-to-back limited sessions to open the week due to a thumb injury. The backup quarterback doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday, but with Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater both healthy, Thompson is unlikely to see the field in Week 8.

  • Dolphins' Skylar Thompson: Inactive Sunday

Thompson (thumb) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against Pittsburgh. Thompson was limited by a right thumb injury during practice this week and won't be able to suit up in primetime Sunday. Tua Tagovailoa will return to the field while Teddy Bridgewater serves as his backup.
