Texans OTAs: Expectations for Texans' Pass Defense After Finishing No. 1 in 2024 Season

Player Outlook
Mixon will begin the 2025 season on the Texans' non-football injury list with a mysterious ankle injury that happened while he was away from the team. He missed all of the team's offseason workouts and their entire preseason. There is no timetable established for his return. With so much uncertainty, Mixon has become an undesirable Fantasy option, going as late as Round 9 in drafts. You can probably understand the risk: If Mixon's injury is more serious than the Texans are letting on, he might not play at all. And even if he does return, will he play like his old self or will he be a little less explosive? It's also worth noting that the Texans signed Nick Chubb, drafted Woody Marks, and kept one-time starter Dameon Pierce and passing downs back Dare Ogunbowale on their roster as of late August. It suggests that they, too, are uncertain about when Mixon will be back. If your league has IR spots, you could quite easily draft Mixon at a low cost and stash him until further news comes out. That would make him worth the Round 9 gamble, especially if you love your first eight picks. But if you don't have that IR spot, or if you can't splurge on an injured player like Mixon, then passing on the veteran is a wise choice. It doesn't help that Mixon turned 29 in July or that Houston's offensive line is still a work in progress.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: GM noncommittal on return in 2025

Texans general manager Nick Caserio declined to answer in the affirmative when asked Wednesday whether Mixon (foot/ankle) will suit up this season, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN reports. Mixon is officially out the first four games of the year after having been placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, but when prompted Wednesday for more clarity about a timetable for his potential return to the field, all Caserio said was that the team will "take it one day at a time," and that players on IR or the NFI lists will be evaluated "after four weeks and see where they are in their progression and then make a determination." Mixon has been sidelined throughout spring activities, training camp and the preseason, leaving Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale as Houston's top backfield options to open the regular season.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Officially out for first four games

The Texans placed Mixon (foot/ankle) on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, ruling him out for the first four games of the season. The move has been expected for at least a few days, with Mixon's recovery timeline still very uncertain. Nick Chubb is the favorite to start in Mixon's place against the Rams in Week 1, although Dameon Pierce and Woody Marks are also in the mix for touches.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Will miss at least four games

Mixon (foot/ankle) is slated to begin the season on reserve/non-football injury list. Mixon, who currently is on the active/non-football injury list due to foot and ankle issues, officially will land on reserve/NFI on Tuesday afternoon, a move that will result in the running back missing at least the first four games of the regular season. In Mixon's looming absence, Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale and Woody Marks are the team's top available backfield options ahead of Week 1.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Placed on NFI list

The Texans placed Mixon (ankle) on the active/non-football injury list for the start of training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Mixon suffered multiple ankle injuries last season, including one that cost him Weeks 3-5, but the current issue is from something that happened during his individual offseason training -- thus the non-football injury designation. He missed spring practices, with reports at the time suggesting he'd likely be ready for training camp. Recent updates imply the Texans still aren't overly concerned and plan to ease Mixon into training camp, with his absence in the meantime potentially freeing up first-team reps for Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Limited reps early in camp

Mixon, who is progressing well in his recovery from an ankle injury, is likely to be eased back into the mix in training camp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Mixon sported a walking boot this spring after getting hurt during individual offseason training, but since then the running back has regained his mobility while ramping up his workouts. Though he could be limited to a degree early on in training camp, when 100 percent healthy he's in line to maintain his status as the top option in a Houston backfield that added Nick Chubb this offseason and returns Dameon Pierce.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: On track for training camp

Mixon, who has been dealing with what Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston describes as foot-ankle issues, is expected to be ready for training camp, which opens July 23. Wilson noted that there's not cause for concern in terms of the training-camp/regular-season status of the Texans' top running back, who missed time this offseason but has made strides since then. Once Mixon returns to the practice field, he'll reclaim his role atop a backfield depth chart that also includes Nick Chubb, who the team signed to a one-year contract last month, as well as Dameon Pierce, 2025 fourth-rounder Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale. In 14 regular-season games with Houston in 2024, Mixon carried 245 times for 1,016 yards and 11 TDs to go along with a 36/309/1 receiving line. Looking ahead, the 28-year-old appears poised to maintain steady usage in 2025, with the presence of Chubb -- health permitting -- providing Mixon with a viable veteran complement to spell his workload.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Missing OTAs with minor injury

Mixon (lower body) is not participating in voluntary team activities Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Mixon has sported a walking boot recently due to an injury Wilson's sources describe as minor, though head coach DeMeco Ryans has yet to comment on the starting running back's status. All expectations remain that Mixon will be a full-go for the start of training camp in late July, if not mandatory minicamp in June. Mixon's inaugural season with Houston saw him dominate backfield reps, compiling 245 carries for 1,016 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight scores across 14 regular-season appearances while adding 36 grabs for 309 yards (on 52 targets) and another score. While Mixon faded in terms of efficiency down the stretch of the regular season, he managed a surge during the Texans' two playoff contests, combining for 43 carries for 194 yards and two scores. Mixon remains secure in a workhorse role entering his age-29 season, with Dameon Pierce and Woody Marks set to compete for No. 2 reps.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Hits century mark in playoff exit

Mixon carried the ball 18 times for 88 yards and a touchdown and caught two of three targets for 12 yards in Saturday's 23-14 divisional-round loss to Kansas City. The running back broke free for a 13-yard TD scamper in the third quarter that should have tied the game at 13-13, but Ka'imi Fairbairn missed the extra point. Mixon reached the century mark in scrimmage yards and got into the end zone in both of Houston's playoff games this season, an emphatic end to his first campaign with the Texans that saw him churn out 1,325 combined yards and 12 total TDs over 14 regular-season contests. Mixon has two years and $15 million left on the contract he signed in March 2024, and there's little reason to think the team will be looking to get out from under the deal this offseason.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Solid chance to face Chiefs

Mixon (ankle), who officially is listed as questionable for Saturday's divisional-round contest against the Chiefs, has a "very, very real chance to play," Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Per Rapoport, the ankle injury that caused Mixon to practice in a limited fashion Wednesday and miss Thursday's session isn't particularly serious, and he can be considered on track to play Saturday barring any unforeseen setbacks. Official word on the status of the Texans' top backfield option will be revealed no later than 90 minutes prior to Saturday's 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Houston has backups Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale on hand in the event that Mixon is limited or unavailable due to his ankle issue.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Added to injury report

Mixon was a limited participant in practice Wednesday due to an ankle injury. Mixon wasn't listed on Houston's injury report Tuesday, so his addition to it a day later makes his status worth monitoring ahead of Saturday's divisional-round game against the Chiefs. Thursday's injury report will reveal whether the running back carries an injury designation into the weekend or is fully cleared to face Kansas City.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Wears down Chargers

Mixon rushed the ball 25 times for 106 yards and one touchdown while also losing a fumble in Saturday's 32-12 win over the Chargers. He added one reception on two targets for 13 yards. Mixon had only six carries for 15 yards at halftime, but he got things going after losing a fumble early in the third quarter. He went on to record long gains of 15, 12 and 17 yards -- the last of which went for a touchdown to seal the victory late in the final quarter. The performance marked Mixon's second time topping 100 yards on the ground in the postseason across eight games.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Limited to one possession

Mixon rushed the ball five times for 23 yards in Sunday's 23-14 win over the Titans. He added one reception on one target for five yards. Mixon played one offensive possession with the rest of the Texans' starting unit and then gave way to Dameon Pierce as the team was locked into the fourth seed in the AFC. His five carries were enough for him to top 1,000 yards on the ground for the second consecutive campaign. While he's been held to fewer than 60 rushing yards in six of his last eight games, Mixon will play a key role in the Houston offense in a playoff matchup against either the Steelers or Chargers.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Struggles on ground continue

Mixon took nine carries for 26 yards and brought in two of three targets for 13 yards in Wednesday's 31-2 loss to Baltimore. Mixon's late-season struggles continued with another mediocre rushing line that featured no trips to the end zone. The first-year Texan is averaging a meager 35.3 rushing yards in three games since Houston's Week 14 bye. The 27-year-old currently sits just seven yards shy of recording the fifth 1,000-yard rushing season of his career, and Mixon should easily accomplish that feat in a favorable matchup against Tennessee in Week 18.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Late-season fade continues

Mixon rushed 14 times for 57 yards and caught one of two targets for 14 yards in Saturday's 27-19 loss to the Chiefs. Kansas City came into Saturday's game having allowed the fewest rushing yards in the NFL to running backs, so Mixon's modest stat line isn't particularly surprising. This game continued an alarming trend, as Mixon has posted 71 total yards or fewer without a touchdown in three of his last four games. Prior to this downturn, he had at least 90 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in seven of eight appearances. Getting back on track won't be easy for the workhorse running back on Christmas against Baltimore's stout run defense.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Cleared for Saturday's game

Mixon (ankle) doesn't have an injury designation for Saturday's game at Kansas City. The Texans listed Mixon as a limited practice participant Tuesday through Thursday, following his brief exit from a 20-12 win over Miami on Sunday. He returned to the game and finished with 17 touches for 56 yards, playing 64 percent of snaps on offense after four straight games at 75 percent or higher. Mixon will face a tough defense Saturday and comes with slightly more workload/injury risk than usual, but he nonetheless profiles as a strong fantasy starter, averaging 107.9 total yards and 1.1 TDs in 11 games this year.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Checks out fine Monday

Mixon suffered a minor ankle injury during Sunday's 20-12 win over the Dolphins, but Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said the running back checked out fine upon being evaluated Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. The injury occurred during the second quarter, and while Mixon was able to finish the game, his 32 snaps were the fewest he played since Week 6. The Texans feel Miami's Jordyn Brooks should have been flagged for an illegal hip-drop tackle, which is similar to the one that resulted in Mixon getting injured Week 2 against the Bears. Though Mixon is expected to be ready to play Saturday at Kansas City, fantasy managers may want to keep an eye on his status leading up to game day nonetheless.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Held in check during win

Mixon rushed 12 times for 23 yards and brought in five of six targets for 33 yards in the Texans' 20-12 win over the Dolphins on Sunday. Mixon was held to his second-lowest rushing yardage total of the season -- both of which have come in the last three games -- but was at least partly able to make up for the downturn with solid output in the passing game. He appeared to get shaken up on a first-half play but never missed any time, and he was able to tie a season high in receptions with his work as a receiver. Mixon next takes aim at the Chiefs' solid defense in a Week 16 Saturday afternoon road battle.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Compiles 119 total yards in win

Mixon rushed 20 times for 101 yards and a touchdown and brought in four of six targets for 18 yards in the Texans' 23-20 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. Mixon managed to get over the 100-yard mark on the ground for the seventh time this season on his final carry of the day coming out of the two-minute warning, an eight-yard run that fittingly sealed the hard-fought win for Houston. The veteran back managed his 11th rushing touchdown of the campaign on a seven-yard run just before the halfway point of the third quarter, and he tied his second-highest reception total of the season as well. Mixon will head into a Week 14 bye just 113 rushing yards short of his fifth career 1,000-yard campaign, a milestone he'll look to hit at the expense of the Dolphins in a Week 15 home matchup on Sunday, Dec. 15.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Shut down by Tennessee

Mixon rushed the ball 14 times for 22 yards in Sunday's loss to the Titans. He added five receptions on six targets for 23 yards. Mixon was coming off a dominant performance Monday against the Cowboys, though he struggled to get going in Sunday's loss. His longest gain went for just eight yards, and 11 of his 14 carries went for two yards or fewer. Mixon managed to salvage his performance in PPR formats with a season-best five receptions, though it was still his lowest yardage total of the season.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Bounces back with three-TD night

Mixon rushed 20 times for 109 yards and three touchdowns and secured two of four targets for 44 yards in the Texans' 34-10 win over the Cowboys on Monday night. A week after being bottled up by a talented Lions defense, Mixon was right back to dominating the opposition with a stellar effort on the ground. Mixon struck early, rattling off a 45-yard touchdown run to cap off the opening drive of the game and subsequently recording a one-yard scoring rush late in the first quarter. The prolific back would replicate the latter feat with 3:16 remaining to close out the scoring on the night, recording a new single-game-high TD total in the process. Mixon also curiously posted his second straight two-catch, 44-yard showing, affording him plenty of momentum ahead of a Week 12 home date with the division rival Titans.
