  • Jonnu Smith: Released by Pittsburgh

The Steelers released Smith on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Following a career year with the Dolphins in 2024 in which he caught 88 of 111 targets for 884 yards and eight touchdowns, Smith was reunited with OC Arthur Smith in Pittsburgh via trade last offseason. Despite the familiarity, Smith found himself in a three- and four-way committee at tight end with the Steelers and never seemed to gel with Aaron Rodgers. Across 17 regular-season games, Smith caught just 38 of 54 targets for 222 yards and two scores. He'll likely be looking for a team with a less crowded depth chart. The move saves Pittsburgh $7 million against the salary cap.

  • Steelers' Jonnu Smith: Production tanks in Pittsburgh

Smith secured 38 of 54 targets for 222 yards and two touchdowns across 17 regular-season games with the Steelers in 2025.

Smith posted a career-best 88-884-8 line on 111 targets with the Dolphins in 2024, but an offseason contract dispute led to his being traded to Pittsburgh, where his receiving production plummeted in a run-first offense designed by Arthur Smith (now at Ohio State). It's hard to imagine a worse scenario for the 30-year-old tight end to have found himself in. The arrival of new head coach Mike McCarthy could provide a new spark on offense, but even if things change for the better, Smith may not have a path to re-emerging as a consistent fantasy contributor due to the involvement of fellow tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington (forearm). Smith has one more year under contract.

  • Steelers' Jonnu Smith: Cleared to play vs. Houston

Smith (glute) does not carry an injury designation into Monday's wild-card game against the Texans, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Smith popped up on Friday's injury report as a limited practice participant due to a glute injury. He was able to log a full session Saturday, which was enough for him to fade an injury designation for Monday's playoff game. Smith logged just one catch (on two targets) for two yards during the Steelers' regular-season finale against the Ravens, and he'll operate as a rotational option in the passing game behind fellow tight end Pat Freiermuth.

  • Steelers' Jonnu Smith: Added to injury report Friday

Smith (glute) was limited at practice Friday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Smith worked fully Thursday, so his addition to the Steelers' injury report a day later is notable. Added context regarding the tight end's status for Monday night's playoff opener against the Texans is slated to arrive via Pittsburgh's final injury report Saturday. Though Smith had a five-catch effort Week 17 (when No. 1 wideout DK Metcalf was suspended), his production during the regular season was sporadic, resulting in a 38-222-2 line on 54 targets in 17 contests, a pace well off the career-best numbers he logged with Miami in 2024.

  • Steelers' Jonnu Smith: Minimal output in Week 18

Smith secured one of two targets for two yards while rushing once for two yards during Sunday's 26-24 win over Baltimore.

Smith tied his season-high mark with five receptions during last week's loss to the Browns, but he wasn't as involved in the passing game Week 18 while playing 44 percent of the team's offensive snaps. Although Darnell Washington (forearm, IR) will remain sidelined to begin the playoffs, Smith is unlikely to be a reliable contributor for Pittsburgh during postseason play. Smith hauled in just 38 of 54 targets for 222 yards and two touchdowns and rushed nine times for 70 yards and a score while appearing in all 17 games during the regular season.

  • Steelers' Jonnu Smith: Leads team in receptions Sunday

Smith secured all five of his targets for 18 yards while adding nine rushing yards on two carries during Sunday's 13-6 loss to Cleveland.

Smith has been inconsistent for most of the regular season, but he has topped 20 yards from scrimmage in three consecutive games. Although he was on the field for just 41 percent of the team's offensive snaps in Week 17, his five targets marked his highest total since Week 9 against the Colts. Smith's involvement in the passing game could remain elevated in next week's win-or-go-home matchup against the Ravens since Darnell Washington sustained a broken arm in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to Cleveland, and No. 1 wideout DK Metcalf will remain suspended.
