While the Knicks struggled offensively as a team, Nickel was a bright spot, leading the way with 16 points fueled by a game-high four triples. The rookie is regarded as a high-level outside scorer after knocking down 40.0 percent of his three-point attempts on 7.6 tries per game across 36 appearances with Vanderbilt during the 2025-26 collegiate season.

The Suns selected Nickel with the No. 47 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and traded him to the Knicks.
The Knicks were very busy shuffling picks during the draft, acquiring the No. 47 selection in the deal that sent Koa Peat to Phoenix. Nickel will head to New York after spending the final two years of his college career at Vanderbilt. Across 36 starts in 2025-26, he averaged 13.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 0.8 steals while shooting 40.0 percent from beyond the arc in 30.5 minutes per contest.
