Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Rough return to rotation
Smith-Shawver didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Twins, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.
Making just his second big-league appearance of the season, Smith-Shawver retired the first seven batters he faced before the wheels began to come off in the third inning, as four straight Minnesota hitters reached base before the right-hander coaxed a double play out of Josh Bell to escape the jam. Smith-Shawver wasn't so lucky in the fifth, getting the hook after 75 pitches (49 strikes) following a bases-loaded walk to Bell. Atlanta has indicated the 23-year-old will remain in the rotation for now as part of a six-man unit -- the team is in the middle of a three-week stretch with just one scheduled off day that takes them to Sept. 3 -- but he'll need to perform better to keep his spot. Smith-Shawver is set to make his next trip to the mound at home next week against the Dodgers.

Braves' Mauricio Dubon: Sitting for second time in four games
Dubon is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins.
Atlanta appears to have five players -- Dubon, Dominic Smith, Jim Jarvis, Mike Yastrzemski and Sean Murphy -- vying for three spots in the lineup against right-handed pitching for any given game. Dubon and Murphy will end up being the odd men out Wednesday, and the former player has now sat twice in Atlanta's last four games.

Braves' Drake Baldwin: Snaps homer drought
Baldwin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Twins.
Baldwin accounted for Atlanta's only run of the contest, taking Zebby Matthews deep for a solo homer in the sixth inning. The blast snapped a 22-game homer drought and gave the sophomore catcher 21 long balls on the season. Baldwin has still been productive recently, reaching safely in eight consecutive games while batting .375 with a .974 OPS during that stretch. Through 103 contests this season, he's slashing .278/.361/.459 with 21 homers, 10 doubles, 63 RBI, 68 runs scored and three stolen bases.

Braves' Tyler Mahle: Takes loss despite quality start
Mahle (4-10) took the loss Tuesday against the Twins, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over 6.2 innings.
Mahle allowed a two-out double in the first inning before Josh Bell launched a two-run homer to open the scoring. The right-hander settled in nicely from there as he didn't surrender another run, recording 17 outs against the final 19 batters he faced. Unfortunately for Mahle, Atlanta provided just one run of support, saddling him with his 10th loss. He's delivered a quality start in each of his three outings since joining the team, allowing only three runs across 18.2 innings while striking out 19 during that span. Mahle owns a 4.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 108:40 K:BB across 113.1 innings this season. He will face a tougher test in his next scheduled start against the star-studded Dodgers.

Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Expected to stick in rotation
Smith-Shawver is expected to remain in the Atlanta rotation beyond Wednesday's start against Minnesota, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Smith-Shawver has been limited to one major-league start so far this season, as he missed extended time at the start of the campaign while completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery. However, he will return to a big-league mound Wednesday, and Atlanta will move to a six-man rotation for the time being to accommodate the 23-year-old right-hander. Smith-Shawver had been pitching brilliantly for Triple-A prior to his promotion Tuesday, allowing just two earned runs with a 23:6 K:BB over his last 19.1 innings spanning four starts for Gwinnett.

Braves' Chuckie Robinson: Finds work in Atlanta organization
Robinson signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Tuesday.
He'll report to Triple-Gwinnett and will enter the lineup right away, as he's slated to start at catcher and bat eighth in Tuesday's game against Durham. Robinson was cut loose by the Dodgers last week after he played in eight games at the big-league level, reaching base just twice in 26 plate appearances.

Braves' Tyler Kinley: DFA'd by Atlanta
Atlanta designated Kinley for assignment Tuesday.
Kinley has struggled since the All-Star break, collecting a 6.00 ERA and 7:7 K:BB over nine innings. However, he's put in some solid work with Atlanta overall dating back to last season with a 2.79 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 64:26 K:BB across 67.2 frames, so the transaction comes as a bit of a surprise. Kinley could attract some interest via waivers.

Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Starting Wednesday for Atlanta
Atlanta recalled Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
Per Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Smith-Shawver will start Wednesday's game against the Twins, giving the regular members of Atlanta's rotation extra rest. It's unclear what the plan is for Smith-Shawver's role beyond that, but it could depend on how he fares Wednesday. Smith-Shawver has looked sharp after coming back from Tommy John surgery, and he allowed just two runs with a 13:4 K:BB over 11 innings in his last two outings with Gwinnett.

Braves' Martin Perez: Ambushed early in seventh loss
Perez (8-7) took the loss Monday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings against the Twins. He struck out three.
Perez ran into trouble early, surrendering four runs in the first frame. The southpaw was able to churn out four scoreless innings afterward, though the damage was done to saddle him with the loss. Monday snapped a three-start streak in which the 35-year-old logged 16 scoreless innings, with his season marks now sitting at a 3.15 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 83:45 K:BB across 111.1 innings (24 outings). Perez is tentatively scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Brewers.

Braves' Ronald Acuna: Swipes first bag since return
Acuna went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks.
He also struck out three times, but Acuna's pilfering of third base in the fifth inning, on the front end of a double steal with Matt Olson, was a very encouraging sign, as it was the star outfielder's first stolen base 19 games since returning from a hamstring strain in late July. If Acuna is feeling more confident in the health of his legs, he could be a lot busier on the basepaths down the stretch. On the season, he sports a .244/.350/.441 slash line with 13 homers and 16 steals in 72 contests.

Braves' Matt Olson: Launches go-ahead homer
Olson went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
Olson put Atlanta ahead for good with two outs in the seventh inning, smashing a 437-foot blast off lefty Brandyn Garcia. It was the first baseman's 36th homer this season, tying Yordan Alvarez for second in the majors behind Kyle Schwarber's 37. In his last 15 games, Olson has gone 16-for-56 (.286) with eight long balls and a 1.141 OPS. He's slashing .264/.340/.551 with 77 RBI, 88 runs scored and three steals across 541 plate appearances this year.

Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Hangs on for 25th save
Iglesias earned the save in Sunday's 5-3 win over Arizona despite allowing a run on a hit and a walk in the ninth inning.
Tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the ninth, Iglesias found himself in some trouble after giving up a walk and a single to open the frame. However, the veteran closer managed to hold the Diamondbacks to one run to earn his 25th save this season. Iglesias has been a bit shaky of late, giving up six runs in his last 5.2 innings. Still, he sports a solid 3.15 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP and 49:14 K:BB across 45.2 innings this year.

Braves' Bryce Elder: Rebounds with quality start
Elder allowed a run on four hits and a walk across six innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He struck out five.
Elder held Arizona to a lone run on Gabriel Moreno's solo homer in the fourth inning, logging his fourth quality start in his last six outings. It was an especially encouraging performance from Elder after he gave up seven runs on 10 hits across five innings against the Mets his last time out. Overall, Elder's ERA sits at 3.92 across 24 starts (137.2 innings) this season with a 1.23 WHIP and 113:46 K:BB. He's currently lined up to face the Brewers on the road his next time out.
