Top Cole Winn News

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Lands on IL with nerve irritation

The Rangers placed Winn on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to nerve irritation in his right hand, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Winn's hand injury may have played a factor in his poor relief appearance in the Rangers' 5-2 loss to the Royals on Tuesday, when he hit two batters with a pitch and yielded a two-run home run across 1.1 innings. He'll undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury, but the 25-year-old reliever won't be eligible to be reinstated from the IL until Sept. 4. Southpaw Jacob Latz was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Recalled from Triple-A

The Rangers recalled Winn from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

Winn has managed a 1.59 ERA in 17 relief innings with the big club this season, but a 11:8 K:BB suggests he's been fortunate. The right-hander will be used in low-leverage spots.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Sent to Triple-A

The Rangers optioned Winn to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.

The right-hander surrendered four runs (three earned) in his last two outings and will lose his place on the big-league roster. Winn had held his opponents scoreless prior to that and has a 1.59 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 11:8 K:BB across 17 big-league innings this year, so he should be back with the Rangers before too long.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Continues scoreless run

Winn walked one and struck out one over a scoreless eighth inning in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Rays.

Winn has been effective out of the Rangers' bullpen, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out six over seven scoreless innings. That extended a scoreless run that started at Triple-A Round Rock, where he hadn't been scored upon in 23.1 relief innings. Walks can still be an issue for Winn, but the former starter may have found a bullpen niche for himself.

Just two days after being sent down to Triple-A, Winn will rejoin the Rangers' bullpen to replace the injured Chris Martin (shoulder). Winn, 25, has pitched 23.1 scoreless innings in the minors and also kept the Astros off the scoreboard for 2.1 frames during his season debut Friday.

Winn was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.

The Rangers optioned Winn to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

Winn was one of three candidates for the Opening Day bullpen sent back to the minors Sunday, with lefties Jacob Latz and Walter Pennington also getting optioned to Round Rock. The 25-year-old Winn reached the majors for the first time in 2024, making 13 appearances while posting a 7.79 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 17.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Successful spring outing

Winn (shoulder) allowed one walk and struck out one across a scoreless inning during Saturday's Cactus League game against the Giants.

Winn has made a full recovery after missing time a season ago due to a sprained right shoulder capsule. He'll now set his sights on earning an Opening Day roster spot after struggling to a 7.79 ERA with a 14:4 K:BB across 17.1 frames in 2024 with the Rangers.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Shifted to 60-day IL

The Rangers transferred Winn (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

Winn was placed on the 15-day IL earlier this week with what was referred to as right shoulder discomfort, but the Rangers are now classifying the injury as a sprained shoulder capsule. The expectation is that he will be sidelined for eight weeks, per Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Placed on major-league 15-day IL

The Rangers rescinded Winn's option to Triple-A Round Rock and placed him on the 15-day injured list Monday with right shoulder discomfort, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Winn appears to have suffered the shoulder injury in his most recent appearance with the Rangers on June 17 against the Mets. He was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, but that move is now void after his placement on the IL.

Winn will return to provide depth to a bullpen that was needed for six innings behind Nathan Eovaldi on Saturday. • Rangers' Cole Winn: Sent to Triple-A

The Rangers optioned Winn to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday.

Winn will give up his spot on the 26-man active roster to right-hander Dane Dunning (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Wednesday versus the Phillies. The demotion comes after Winn had struggled mightily thus far in May, giving up runs in five of his six appearances while pitching to a 13.50 ERA and 2.05 WHIP over 7.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Hits first snag in majors

Winn (0-1) was charged with Friday's loss after giving up four runs on four hits over one-third of an inning against the Royals.

Winn entered a 1-1 game to start the seventh inning and allowed four singles before his removal. The 24-year-old breezed through his introduction to MLB, throwing seven scoreless innings over five outings (zero hits, one walk, seven strikeouts) before facing his first adversity Friday. Texans general manager Chris Young raved about the right-hander to Kenndi Landry of MLB.com earlier this week, noting Winn was attacking the strike zone. Walks have been issue in the past for Winn, whose strikes may have caught too much of the zone Friday.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Gets call from Triple-A

The Rangers recalled Winn from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

Winn will give the Rangers a fresh arm in the bullpen for Sunday's series finale in Houston, but he may not stick around in the big leagues for long. He was added to the 26-man active roster as a replacement for Cody Bradford (back), who was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Rangers will replace Bradford in the rotation in the series opener in Detroit on Monday, when Michael Lorenzen (neck) will be brought back from the IL. Texas could end up sending Winn back to Round Rock to make room on the active roster for Lorenzen.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Sent to minor-league camp

Winn was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

Winn surrendered eight runs over 7.1 frames in four outings during spring training, essentially eliminating his longshot chance of making Texas' Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old struggled at Round Rock last season with a 7.22 ERA and 97:79 K:BB over 101 innings, and he'll likely need better performance in 2024 to have a real chance at making his MLB debut.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: On starter path

Winn allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over 1.2 innings in Monday's Cactus League start against the White Sox.

Winn ran into early trouble in the form of a walk, a single and a wild pitch, giving up a run while struggling to control the count. He was pulled with two outs in his second frame after bumping up against a 40-pitch limit. A first-round pick in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, Winn's career stalled at Triple-A Round Rock the last two seasons to the extent the organization moved him to the bullpen. However, strong stint as a starter in the Puerto Rican Winter League put him back on a path to a rotation spot.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Still overmatched at Triple-A

Winn has a 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in 16 innings for Triple-A Round Rock.

The 23-year-old righty has averaged four innings per appearance while walking 13 and striking out 16. The results haven't matched Winn's prospect pedigree to date at Triple-A, where he has a 6.49 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 145.2 career innings.

  • Rangers' Cole Winn: Shielded from Rule 5 draft

Winn was added to the Rangers' 40-man roster Tuesday.

There were high expectations for Winn last season and he fell flat, logging a 6.51 ERA in 121.2 innings at Triple-A. Pedigree (15th overall pick in 2018) and youth (turns 23 this month) are still on his side, but he will need make some adjustments or improvements ahead of next season.
