Mariners' Logan Evans: Expected to start throwing soon
Evans had a cortisone shot in his elbow recently and is scheduled to resume throwing in the next couple of days, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reported Friday.
Evans was placed on the injured list Aug. 15 with inflammation in his right elbow, and he received a cortisone shot to address the inflammation. He's close to resuming his throwing progression, but it's unclear how far behind he fell during the shutdown period. Evans shouldn't be expected back until September.

Mariners' Logan Evans: On IL with elbow issue
The Mariners placed Evans on the 15-day injured list Friday due to right elbow inflammation.
The right-hander issued a season-high four walks as he gave up three runs (two earned) across four innings Thursday in Baltimore, and he'll now be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks after being diagnosed with elbow inflammation. Evans' may have been set to lose his place in Seattle's rotation regardless of the injury since Bryce Miller (elbow) is nearing his return from the injured list.

Evans (6-4) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 5.1 innings against the Rays. He struck out four.
The rookie gave up a first-inning homer to Brandon Lowe but settled in to pitch into the sixth before being lifted for Caleb Ferguson, who surrendered a three-run shot to Junior Caminero that brought home both of Evans' inherited runners. After a strong start to his big-league career, Evans has hit a rough patch, allowing multiple runs in five of his past six outings -- including two six-run performances. For the season, the right-hander holds a 4.36 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 74.1 innings in 14 starts.

After a couple of decent starts in a row, Evans struggled mightily in this contest, allowing two home runs among the seven hits. The six runs allowed match his season high, and he's walked multiple batters in four straight starts. He's allowed 15 runs over 18.1 innings in that span, raising his ERA to 4.22 with a 1.44 WHIP and 50:23 K:BB through 64 innings across 12 starts overall. If Evans continues to struggle, he could be sent back to Triple-A Tacoma, especially if the Mariners pursue a starting pitcher before Thursday's trade deadline. Should Evans remain in the majors, he's projected to start at home versus the Rangers this weekend.

Jazz Chisholm had the right-hander's number in this one, launching a solo shot off Evans in the third inning before connecting on a two-run blast in the fifth that helped chase him from the game. Evans will be making his second straight turn through the Seattle rotation after he was summoned from Triple-A Tacoma last week to replace the struggling Emerson Hancock, who was demoted to the minors. In his first big-league appearance since June 10 this past Thursday, Evans took a no-decision in the Mariners' 3-2 loss to the Royals while striking out three over 5.2 shutout innings. Evans owns a mediocre 17.4 percent strikeout rate over eight starts with Seattle this season, but he's thus far pitched to a 2.96 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 45.2 innings. Provided he can avoid any major blowups in future starts, the rookie right-hander should hold down a spot in the Seattle rotation until Bryce Miller (elbow) is ready to return from the injured list.

The 24-year-old righty will be taking the place of Emerson Hancock in Seattle's rotation, as the latter was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday. Mariners manager Dan Wilson confirmed that Evans will be called up from Triple-A Tacoma to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks in Arizona, Tim Booth of The Seattle Times reports.
Evans made the trip with the Mariners to Arizona due to what Wilson initially termed as a precautionary reason, but the rookie right-hander will end up being needed in the rotation as a replacement for Bryce Miller, who will go back on the injured list due to elbow inflammation, which previously shelved him in May. Though Miller could be in line for a lengthier stay on the IL this time around, Evans could be headed back to Tacoma after his start Tuesday. The Mariners are expected to get Logan Gilbert (elbow) back from the IL early next week, and Evans might find himself as the odd man out of the rotation if Seattle elects to keep Emerson Hancock in place as its fifth starter. Over his six starts with the Mariners earlier this season, Evans went 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB in 35 innings.
